Airport fees are negotiable depending on how much business each party is going to get out of it.
Peter Rigby will be very well aware that its going to take to build up business both based at the airport and encouraging regular executive and charter operators to use the airport, a large part of this will be contacting charter operators to encourage them to inform their clients of the advantages of Coventry over Brum.

I do hope that whoever is placed in charge on the ground at Cov' also has the common sense to recognise the importance and value of G/A and flight training as well and to set landing fees for them at a sensible level.

Leofric is right, give them a year or so to settle down.

In terms of fees for VFR light aircraft I am told:- "The price for visiting aircraft to CVT from 6th September is 0.012 per kg on MTOW. So for a 726kg Cessna 150 you will pay £8.71. There is also a 50% discount for visiting aircraft that are just dropping in for fuel. Plus our fuel should be one of the cheapest in the local area."

Leofric Responce

With reference to your statement of not losing any based opertaors. The rumour has it that RVL are moving to east Midlands due to the uncertain future of Coventry. So that must make a big impact on Coventry traffic once they go.

I actually said CVT had lost "very few" operators.
Rumours have abounded about RVL (among others) leaving and they still might (as might any other operator). They do have an issue with not having 24 hour opening for their Coastguard "on-call" contract (which is why they have a couple of aircraft at BHX) however the fact is that they are presently still at Coventry. I have little doubt Sir Peter and his team will try to keep it that way.

On the airline front, it's only going to be the odd seasonal holiday charters - Channel Islands, Spain - bucket & spade crowd, then skiing packages in the winter. The big low cost operators won't move in for multiple daily routes unless the terminal is gutted - or replaced entirely - that's not going to happen judging by the planning history!

On the business aviation front, there's only 5-10 movements a day at BHX, so assuming one pinches a bit of that back, where else is the business aviation traffic going to come from? BHX is very cheap for parking and there's a choice for handling, whilst landing fees are not extortionate and fuel will always be cheaper than Coventry - so why go 15 miles down the road unless you want to actually visit Coventry City or east of Coventry? There's the owner's CJ (up for sale) and one or two other local business jet owners around, but that's it. Of the private jet owners within a 30 mile or greater catchment, East Midlands or BHX are just as viable.

GA may migrate from the likes of Wellesbourne, Sywell and Turweston, but they all offer cheap and chearful alternatives with well established 'club' type flying environments. Patriot's own helicopter businesses moving to Coventry will be useful, but that the owner's own company, not fresh pickings.

What Coventry needs is to claw back any way they can that freight business they once had and try and establish some airline MRO operations like ATC Lasham or Chevron at Kemble. The freight though needs that nightime capability - very costly on resources. They could cover the place with aircraft breaking projects (like Kemble again), but that is a poor payer and environmentally a bit of a nightmare - lots of contamination isssues.

It will get a little bit of everything back, but a little bit of this and that won't pay all the bills without some other, non-aviation, property-related projects.

It's probably the property development around the periphery that long term will secure a profitable future.

Pop concerts, festivals and drag racing might supplement the coffers too!

No money in Popes though.

Thats very true there is only about 5-10 movements a day sometimes more but on average yes your right and most of those use siganture at other airports so they are always going to carry on using them especially when money is no object. Unless they actually need to go to coventry for some reason they will not fly into there..

I can not see Patriot helicopters paying any money into CVT for landing fees etc so thats not going to make CVT any money and regarding freight, BHX is coping very well and all customers and operators are more than happy at BHX and 50% of these aircraft dont stop long enough to pay for parking anyway and cov wouldnt be making much money on landing fees on like a metro..

Cov would make more money as a drag strip, get the boy racers down they will pay loads to race up and down the runway!

I would imagine the latest acquisition from BHX may be a big help in that area...I think BHX will regret not treating MW properly!!

I see Royal Mail have put a tender out for a Belfast-Coventry-Belfast flight on behalf of Parcel Force, running Mon-Fri nights. A step forward (should it be awarded that is!)

IIRC CVT used indeed to be hub for PO/Parcelforce years ago way before Thomson/Britannia came on the scene.

May not be such a good idea going for this. Do these flights operate at night? If so it immediately creates a staffing problem for ATC, unless the airport is only going to be open at night increasing staff will no doubt be necessary to comply with SRATCOH time constraints.ATCOs aren't cheap.

Airline

You are not refering to the Flybe rumour are you.

Would have though a prime target would be the RJ lot at BHX

Yep, excellent day had....I hope some of those food outlets donated but I doubt it. I wouldn't let that spoil our day though.....
Well done to CVT for hosting it...

Just saw a "big plane" coming in to Cov from my office in Walsgrave - it was following the line of the A45. This about 13:40 today... I'm short sighted, but someone reckoned it was a "passenger plane"... I suspect they're associating "big planes" (It had two engines, you know) with passenger flights...

Hasn't Captain Pugwash got more chance of forming "Flying Pig" airlines (His shipping business failed due to piracy in Somalia) than anyone else moving in.

Anyway, just curious about what it actually was.

I think someone is mixing up the A45 with the A46. The Coventry Eastern Bypass is the A46, the road up past the site of the former peugeot factory at Ryton to the M45 is the A45.
