I think we are all fed up with these charges, but this is not something that just BHX is .doing, so I don't understand why you single out BHX?

They are all at it to claw back money, and if you think Coventry wouldn't consider jumping on the same band wagon in the name of business... ?
Afaik, the road directly outside the CVT terminal is public, not owned by the industrial estate. Therefore, what could CVT do to stop people dropping off just outside? Hypothetically, they could charge a £1 'toll' for 'pedestrians' to enter the premises, but I'm not sure that would wash.

Opening Hours Winter.
As per latest Notams.
Winter opening hours will be Mon-Fri 0700-0100. Sat-Sun 0900-1900.
Fire Cover has gone up to Cat 4 at certain times of the day.
All this for 2 x Atp's and a shed.
Its not cheap to switch those runway lights on at 2300................
The cost to put all the above in to place for at the most 3 scheduled freight flights and the odd adhoc freight flight is huge..................

faced with massive reductions in aviation charges over the past 20 years airports, as business, have had to diversify their income. Now that lower fares are here the passenger has to still make the contribution to the income. It's just in other ways, whether via the shops or car parks or indeed the drop off.
that way, the staff and investors get paid.
If CVT can do it any other way - and make money - good luck to them, I somehow doubt that profit will be a word heard around the airport operation for many a year to come though.

Perhaps Sir Peter was relying more on gaining Enterprise Zone status than we thought.
In an article on the failure to gain EZ status for the airport, the Coventry Telegraph, (22nd August) says he insists he will continue to push ahead with his plans for passenger flights from Coventry airport.
However he also says it is not 'proving easy' attracting airlines to the city.
I'm surprised he ever thought it might be.

I went up to the Airbase thing on the heritage weekend (Cheap entry - not really a plane fan, but my 2 year old son is plane-mad and my daughter was interested as well.) I've never been to that side of the airport before, and was quite surprised at how run down it is. There are parking spaces for the police in one bit that are so overgrown I think you'd lose a car in it! A lot of temporary buildings and old hangars and poorly maintained roads... Even going in through the gate if was like driving into some sort of weird "ghost airport." There looked to be a broken cargo plane just sitting on the grass by Airbase... With no engines in it!
No wonder they want to regenerate it. I was also round at Siskin drive a few days later, and that whole business park is looking run down as well with a lot of large empty buildings. In fact, the whole of Coventry (including the city centre) seems to be somewhat empty... It's not as if there's plenty of land around the city that are supposedly being turned into business parks. Canley business park also has a lot of empty buildings these days.
The Airbase thing was OK, but a bit lacking. The DC6 diner thing didn't open when it was supposed to, and the kids were hungry so we went home. They enjoyed going inside the Nimrod, Shackleton and DC6. It all felt poorly organised, though, with aircraft closing and stuff not being open... it was OK for ten pounds for 4 non-plane buffs, but I certainly wouldn't want to pay full price...

Haven't they had the ex-BHX guy running around for a year or so now chasing airline opportunities? Don't know why they haven't at least got some seasonal bucket & spade charters, Jersey etc. or ski trips for the winter. Those are the easy fixes, the full time scheduled flights though are going to be more challenging?
Apart from the establishment of that old aeroplane turned into a diner, not quite sure what else has happened since it reopened? Tidied up around the edges perhaps, but little else, albeit they have some limited cargo flights so they can extend the opening hours.

No post since Cov opened again, whats gooing on?? been 4 weeks without no banter or rumours......
There are plenty of rumours about more freight flights and passenger flights but as the details are different each time one hears them, it probably means that none have much substance yet.

Well, back when the founder of "easy" actually wanted to build up his airline, he asked BHX or CVT to 'make me an offer I can't refuse'. Since then, no easy at EMA either.
It seems odd that the big orange can completely desert the Midlands, but launch new routes from the east end of Essex - aka London's 6th, or is that 7th, 8th or 9th airport?
Normally when you have three potential bidders for your business, someone should be able to come up with a deal.
My suspicion is that they are watching to see when the baby finally breathes its last, and then will go in like vultures to BHX, but surely not before CVT do at least make them some kind of offer.... (of course they may have done so already, usual.....)

OK then, let's stir the pot.
HS2 passes through Stoneleigh, and to their credit I've heard very little from CAECA and other anti-CVT protestors lately. You'd expect a nimby to be against a new train line too, although I suppose it does whoosh them closer to their "proper" airports.
Bearing in mind that BHX's "London Birmingham" ambitions are equally farcical, shouldn't we start asking for our own spur, going on about 1 min security lines in the portakabins and so on? Even if it didn't give us our flights back, you could still build a massive Parkway station & loads of parking.
Then we could no longer bitch that HS2 just sends Coventry to Coventry

Notwithstanding the apparent lack of activity at EGBE, there will be an interesting day on Saturday 9th June this year. Project Propeller is staging their annual ex WWII aircrew fly-in at Baginton. Lots of GA activity usually accompanies this event.
Any GA Pilot willing to fly some of the old-timers in should contact the organisation via their website.

An answer to all those nay-sayers about Sir Peter's efforts at Coventry.
