"I wonder what the remit of An Bord Snip was? "
If you read the report, you would have seen their terms of reference.
Remember - the politicians have created ABSN to insulate them against the coming cuts when it was their spending which caused Ireland's over-extension and thus it should have been the pols to face the music.

The new Air Travel Tax is collecting €150m a year as NEW money for the government coffers. The Regionals must be contribution €6m-€7m per year on this....leaving a NET cost to the Government of €8m+ for the annual €15m PSO Subsidy.
It was hard enought to get interest last year from airlines to go after the PSO. It is only Aer Arann who are really interested in this business.
If there is no PSO....there will be no flights to some of these airports (Sligo & Donegal). The negative effect of Dole + fall in PRSI/PAYE + loss of visotor spend in locality etc will far exceed the €8m saved.
I hope that the Govt used some common sense sense here and look at the 'value added' by the operation of the PSO.

I know Aer Arann operates a seasonal service to SOU from Cork but how likely could they be tempted to operate from Bournemouth? It would be great if they could restart BOH-PIK flights and perhaps a couple of others

Belfast City/Cork
Aer Arann are dropping the Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday early flights on Cork/Belfast City/Cork. This advice was given to our office, however, we thought it was for August time only but it seems that many of the TUe Wed & Thurs flights are not going beyond August. Does anyone know for sure what time this cancellation relates to ? The implication here is that Monday and Friday are the only days that a day return is available. I am not sure how reliable the website is?

Twice daily seems to be fully restored weekdays in September. I suspect it was a reduction for August given the lower business travel levels in the summer.

RE report today's Irish Times
O'Ceidigh statement curious... ref to walking away and trying something new...??
Sounds like someone who expects the game to get a lot tighter in the coming months. What chance 10 million investment in current climate?

He's actively involved in preparing a bid for the the Irish Search and Rescue contract which expires in the next two or three years. That was probably what he was refering to.

I had only been looking at the Aer Arann timetable when I saw your post;
I think that the 10 aircraft are in use all the time; for eg here is the first flight of the day for the 10 aircraft; This is on a typical Monday;
Not sure which ones are ATR72 and which are ATR42, but hey will take a wild guess!!
1. Cork Belfast 0700 ... ATR 72 (quite sure it's 72 as have been on this flt)
2. Dublin Derry 0700... ATR 42 (have seen 42 in Derry so probably is)
3. Donegal Dublin 0800..ATR42
4. Galway Dublin 0625..ATR72
5. Galway Dublin 0745..ATR72
6. Galway Luton 0715..ATR72
7. Knock Dublin 0715.. ATR42
8. Dublin Sligo 0735.. ATR42 (have heard b4 that this route is usually42)
9. Waterford Luton... ATR72
10. IOM London City.. ATR72 (this is a 72 for definite)

@EI-BUD - thanks for the research.
I have been on the Knock flight on an ATR72 a while ago, but for the usual loads an ATR42 certainly is sufficient.
So if their 10 aircraft are kept busy, one wonders how they manage to do longer-term leases.

good question virgin blue;
I suspect that some trimming will be done to the schedule, the company that I work for uses Belfast City Cork most days of the week and were advised by email on Friday by our office that the Tuesday Wednesday and Friday morning service on the route was being withdrawn and we have been told that it is not known when it is returning. However, when we look at the booking engine it seems to be back from September sometime.
We have an account and an agreed price on the flight so they most likely would have to keep us advised. Me suspects that some routes will be curtailed and as a result they can compress the schedule to free up 1 aircraft. But one never knows!!

As per Jethro's, Aer Arann currently has 4 ATR42s, 2 ATR72-200s and 4 ATR72-500s on strength. How many of the 10 do they need for daily operations?
true! but as per Wikipedia:
(42-300) 4
(72-201) 3
(72-500) 4
?????

Wikipedia is probably showing EIREJ which was the odd-ball that was leased to Euromanx but then returned suddenly to RE.
RE did had a few more aircraft but sold some of the newer aircraft. EICVR dissapeared for a while then suddenly re-appeared back in the RE fleet.
Last year RE were not only doing long term lease for Flybe but i think one was in finland at the same time.

As per Jethro, the third ATR72-200 (EI-REJ) left the fleet a couple of weeks ago.
They seems to be a bit stretched as they brought back a wfu ATR42 to service a while ago.
