The US ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney was in the mid-west during the week.He suggested Shannon become a cargo hub.He also promised to recommend that Obama transit Shannon if he visits Ireland before the 2012 election.

So Shannon should become a Cargo hub. Now where did I hear that before? Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan,Clinton and the younger Bush all visited Shannon during their Presidency so no surprise if Obama does.
Their current problems stem from the deal they did with Ryanair in 2005. They should have held tough then and deal with Ryanair on the same terms as eveyone else. They'd never have got to 3.6m with out them but most of that growth was like the property bubble!

Several posters have argued that the island of Ireland has too many airports. If so let the market decide and if Shannon closes so be it (along with several others where improved road links are reducing their viability)

Shannon will never close. It has a good future if it can get its cost base right. It also needs to stop hankering back to the time when it was one of ghe crossroads of the aviation World. It should basecits business plan on the needs of the mid west region and ensure that any deals it does with airlines are sustainable. Throwing money at airlines in order to keep the numbers up will no longer work.

Too many airports
I agree absolutely with dublindispatch on this; we do have too many airports, especially with the improving motorway network.
The problem is successive governments with no policy on air transport; fear of losing votes rather than proper planning. Not likely to change as long as government remains the big shareholder at Aer Lingus.

If Shannon closed, you could be sure someone would buy it and reopen it. The airfield facilities are fantastic and it has a reasonable catchment area. The main problem is being stuck with a cost base from when it had more significance. But if you bought the facilities, all those disappear.
I suspect we will see the closure of some Irish regional airports when the PSO routes are scrapped.
Sligo seems particularly vulnerable as it is so close to Knock (as pointed out elsewhere, it takes less time to travel from Sligo to Knock than it does from some parts of the southside of Dublin to Dublin airport) and is constrained in terms of expansion.
Galway has similar problems. A larger catchment will earn it a stay of execution, but with the future motorway making it even easier to get to Shannon, I would be surprised if it is still around in 20 years time.
Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Knock are safe. I reckon Waterford can be made to work. Kerry can probably make some kind of future too if it can concentrate on inbound tourism.
I have no idea about Carrickfinn. In some ways it looks the least attractive, but it's also a candidate for PSO retention considering there are no other reasonable public transport methods of getting to Dublin.
