VOLOTEA/CAE MADRID

Good Morning all !
I received an invite from CAE to attend a selection in Madrid , designed to provide flight crew to a new European airline called Volotea (LCC , B717) . It's short notice (3 days) , expensive (you have to pay for your own transport , accommodation ...+ 460 EUR for the sim check ) but apparently , if succesful , the Type course is financed by the airline . The Problem you ask ? I have no idea what the conditions will be (salary or benefits) and won't know until the second stage of the selection which is an interview by the airline ( CAE does not seem to know what the T&C's will be ) .
Anybody here can shed a light to help me decide if I should go or not ? I don't really want to spend close to 1000 EUR to learn afterwards that it's a 1200 eur a month job .

Thanks !!

Well you may already have gathered that the folks behind this Company were originally behind Vueling, which is not renowned for rewarding it's First Officers (assuming it is that for which you applied) with a decent salary.

And the first base, rather than in Spain, is to be Venice in a country therefore which is not renowned for rewarding LCC First Officers with a decent salary (think Windjet/Blue Panorama).

I have no inside knowledge but could draw my own conclusions.

Bearing in mind that they are only seeking people with upwards of 1500 hours (i.e. not 200 hours wallet-wavers) I would be inclined to decline their kind invitation until such time as they either reveal the basic employment terms offered or waive the assessment fee.

And if everyone would do this you can bet they would soon change the requirements for attendance.

Anyway, 460 euros to attend is a downright disgrace.

Judging by the timing and the type the operate I am more inclined to think this outfit is rising from the ashes of Spanair...

What the salary has to do with the country of basing is a concept that escapes me, maybe you want to explain that as well.

Not long ago they held a Cabin Crew's recruitment day in VCE, lots of guys & gals interested but, after the salary was disclosed (and the other "perks" such as pay-4-ur-uniform, training, etc,etc...), ALL of them turned around and walked out. Now...tell me that Italy's economics are in top-shape and all those folks were spoiled ones, all wanted to be fed with a silver spoon...

Perceval...I would save my cash for better days, unless you are out of work.

I tend to agree with you . I am not a huge fan of throwing away my hard earned money (which isn't exactly plentiful anyhow) especially with that many unknown factors . On the other hand , companies offering to finance a Type Rating are not that common anymore ( thanks to the 'wallet wavers' you mentioned earlier ) which is why I'm inquiring .
@DK , I've just heard about the cabin crew wannabes walk out . Not the best start I have to say , that's exactly what I'm worried about
Back to my two paddles for a while longer I reckon !

drag king,

My point about the base being that, instead of opening on "home" spanish turf (which I doubt is any less brown) they are opening in a foreign market notionally up against airlines whose economics revolve around P2F and 1200 euro a month co-pilots.

To be competitive I cannot see that they will be able to offer anything significantly better especially if they pay the type rating, although I would love to be proved wrong. There may well be a gap at Venice to be filled although Air One are also looking at this.

I wish them well but I hope everyone will cordially decline the invitation to hand over 460 notes.

Some peeps from the Italian Press: LA STAMPA

For those who thought RYR was already bad enough, here are the minutes:

-Looking for 300 CC
-Salary just over 1000 euro/month
-6 legs/day with 25 mins turnaround
-Uniform/training/housing on your tab (paid 75 quid/month out of 1st 12 months of wages)
-5% of the in-flight catering revenue to be shared as "wages improvement"

Those who attended (backed up by the CIGL union) shown up the proverbial middle finger...

PS: paddles are noisy and uncomfortable but being out of cash and unemployed because another buccaneer's financial venture went bad is worse!

PPS: POST #11 for those who can read Spanish, has the first-hand, real-life and in full-details horror story I have summoned above...WTF!

Well, Drag King... you are just 180 degrees off course. Absolutely nothing to do with Spanair or its ashes.

If you speak spanish you will rapidly notice that there is already a big scandal regarding the practices in that company: very low salary and you have to pay for uniform, meal, etc, just as Ryanair.

Lots of guys went to Cae madrid and failed.

Of course you have to pay 460 euros, plus 70 euros of taxi from madrid airport (return) and maybe a hotel room at madrid, plus your flight go and back to where you live. If you dont prepare yourself in a simulator, you will sweat a lot . You will be asked to do a Bravo pattern. Then if you pass all, you will need to travel at Barcelona for the interview at your own expense. But disregard that if you dont speak spanish you will not interest them.

Type rating is half paid and deducted on your salary. Expect 2300 euros gross/month for 80 hrs.
You will need to pay your housing during the training and uniform, id, etc... Viva the lowcost. Remember the lowcost has killed the profession.
Flexible roster, 6 legs a day..enjoy.

By the way, the b717 is not produced anymore. This is a totally useless TR to have, but in there are so many jobless pilots who need to fly for peanuts, so there you go!

Good luck

Wow , a Bravo Pattern ! Haven't seen that since the time I was teaching in the US . On what are they doing their (expensive) sim assesment anyway ? MD , Dash or a FNPT ?
@S,S and sun : May I ask how you came across your salary / TR informations ? What about Spanish language requirement ? They say they would prefer spanish , Italian or French as well as English ...

In any case , 2300 EUR Gross is ridiculous . might as well ask my company to demote me if I want to earn that ! (I'd still get more as F/O on my L410 ) .

Having said that , I don't believe in 'useless' type ratings as you said . It must be a great aircraft to fly and at least it would be a progression for me . I believe in useless companies though

That's what the press says plus the rumour (not so...rumour, though) that the ex-JKK chaps will be the "lucky ones" to be chosen. The facts that many of them used to fly the 717 is mighty coincidental, of course...

Feel free to apply, I won't be in the stampede not even this time.

Suerte

I got those information by friends cabin crew and pilots who have done the interviews. They do their sim on an old Md. All my friend who went to the interviews dont speak anything else than spanish and english, and one was offered a job to be based in Venice but did not take it eventually due to crap salary and contract. The headquater is in spain, it is a 100% spanish company and like all spanish company they prefer people who speak good spanish. Remember that vueling fired all foregners who dont speak spanish.
Salary is 1200 gross basic but if you fly 80 hrs per month ( good if you think it must be a great aircraft to fly) then you make 2100-2500 gross- they take some money from your salary for the type rating during 3 years. I dont know how much you pay tax in italy or france but probably your net salary will be around 1700-2000 euros. As first officer. Plus meal to pay, uniform, all the same crap like ryanair. Probably Ryanair is a better deal, although it's bad also.
Cabin crew will be paid 900 euros net a month and will be expected to work really really hard. This is low cost man. Don't expect to have the same treatment as a normal carrier. The idea is to sell tickets for 19 euros all included, you have to help out passenger who want to fly for peanuts. Be gererous, flying is so wonderful!! And as you say it's better than a let410, you are on the good track to become THE winer

My advice, well, if you dont apply you may regret, at least if you try, you will lose money and time for a pay to interview scheme but at least you will have no regret of having not applied. Listen to your hart, like the music says

No problem but once again I don't want to help you in your decision, I just answer to your questions with the info I have around my friends. I would advice you to try and apply and you will judge by yourself. Just read the topic on the spanish forum here...

All the best if this is what you want.
