Strong mandate for action = management wanting to talk.
Funny old thing that. Perhaps the doubters, nos and weak d*cks etc will finally learn something.

This from the BALPA website:
MORE VOTES FOR STRIKES IN BMI
The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) announced this afternoon that pilots in two more divisions of BMI, the third largest airline in Britain, have voted to take strike action.
Pilots in BMI Mainline, the original division of the company which flies a major part of its operation out of Heathrow, voted by 89% to 11% to take strike action in a 92% poll.
Pilots in BMI Regional, voted by 86% to 13% to take strike action in a 97% poll.
These results follow the ballot in bmi baby, the ‘low frills’ division of the airline, where 73% of pilots voted for industrial action and 27% against.
‘This means that pilots in all three BMI subsidiaries have voted to strike,’ said Jim McAuslan, General Secretary of BALPA. ‘One could be an accident, two a coincidence but with all three pilot groups supporting strike action we have revealed a real feeling of injustice among pilots. Although there are separate and specific issues of dispute in each division, the overarching concern is that the company is bulldozing through change.
‘Pilots are highly professional people but in BMI they feel they are not appreciated, there is a total lack of respect.
‘ Pilots in bmi baby had their take home pay cut without any consultation whatsoever. Pilots in BMI Mainline are having their pension scheme contributions increased from 10% to 18.5%. Pilots in BMI Regional have poor roster arrangements which become unmanageable as a result of fatigue-inducing changes. And all these results together show that BMI pilots are saying is enough is enough.’
Now that all three ballot results are in, BALPA will decide when strikes will take place.
A wide range of airports will be affected, including Heathrow, Aberdeen, Manchester, Norwich, Southampton, Stornoway, Cardiff, Birmingham, East Midlands, Teesside, Edinburgh and Belfast.
‘Our dispute is not with the travelling public,’ Jim McAuslan said, ‘so we shall give as much notice as possible of strike days so that individuals can make alternative travel arrangements.
‘We are pleased the company has now agreed to have crisis talks, which will begin next week. The company will have to come back to the negotiating table with a new attitude to each of the individual issues in dispute, and with it a real commitment to tackling the underlying causes. That is why we suggested that the arbitration service ACAS become involved.’

Management are running to the table!!!!
I wonder what made them change their minds?
Certainly not the likes of skylion/mccdatabase.
You see - spinelessness will get you nowhere in this business.
Well done all of us!!!!

I havent posted in ages, but its good to see that common sense prevails. I left the aviation industry and now commute to Dublin every week from Heathrow - looks like I and many others will need to make alternative arrangements. Are BMI expected to post a profit this year ?

The baby website is still displaying an extremely patronising message to the public by management.
I hope BALPA will now demand the removal of this piece of drivel from the website, as it is wholly misleading and confusing for the public.
bmibaby has today (16th August 2006) been advised by BALPA (British Airline Pilots’ Association) that 90 of bmibaby’s 189 pilot workforce have voted in favour of strike action. This represents 47% of the total bmibaby pilot workforce.
Given that less than 50% of bmibaby’s pilots voted for a strike we welcome BALPA’s decision not to proceed with one. BALPA have requested a meeting with us to attempt to find a way through the dispute and we are reflecting on that proposal.
bmibaby’s offer of negotiations for a multi year pay deal for 2007 onwards remains on the table and we remain hopeful that any industrial action can be avoided.
Customers are advised to make no changes to their travel plans. bmibaby have contingency plans in place to deal with any operational disruption and will keep customers advised of current information via this website.

"Nigel Turner, bmi group’s chief executive, said: “The aviation industry faces challenging issues, especially highlighted by the events of the last two weeks. It is important that we work together to take the business forward."

What more can I say except well done to all. What makes it such a strong result is not just the vote itself but the turnout figures! It's only the beginning, but at least we're up and running.
b.t.w. Nigel, it's been nice knowing you, and goodbye!
cheers

Can anyone explain why the balpa membership is so low in baby and do you think the baby vote would have carried as much weight without the other two votes.
Surely Balpa should now launch a recruitment offensive on the back of the recent success. I have to admit that I am amazed Balpa were sat in crewrooms trying to get people to join up, when even if they did they were unable to vote and so seemed a pointless exercise.
I would have liked to have seen this proactive recruitment weeks before the ballot papers went out in order to ensure a high percentage of the company could at least vote!

Well done again to all ...
However, I think we should all be cautious that a desperate Midland management team do not try and 'break our will' one last time by making an example of the baby action, which in theory will come first ...
BALPA, as many have asked for before - is there a reason that we cannot synchronise the 3 strikes for maximum effect - this would also to reduce the likelihood of management trying to 'pick off' individual groups or individual pilots ??

You seem not to have learnt from the posters above and crawled away into a dark little corner.
You live in a democracy and that's that.
I'm sure you'd relish in the old Eastern Block where workers have never had any say in the dictatorships of state owned factories.
Here, this is the West and we have a democracy. That is the MAJORITY rule.
If with all that, the company can not sustain itself after the coming negotiations, then indeed the MAJORITY will have had a hand at that.
The MAJORITY will then be looking for a job elsewhere. Big deal!
Better then continueing the slave like existence we've been suffering from.
So once and for all- if YOU don't like it, go already!
