Captain Ed,
Of course a man would have done as well, but so would the other girls in my outfit. So there's not much more I can say - we ain't ever going to agree on this one! I believe that women have an absolute right to be in the flight-deck - you don't. End of story I guess.
Cheers

Gentleman Please!!! - Back to the subject
Dont degrade yourselves like the Singaporean management who refuse to recognise equal opportunities. But what do you expect? There are 11 International Human Rights Treaties and guess how many the Singaporean Govt have signed.....ZERO! 33,000 international treaties of which the Singaporeans have signed....550! And those pertain mainly to transport where they avoid paying compensation or taking liability. A chip off the 'ol block
There's no shafting like a Singaporean shafting.

Final Trim
You need to trim your sails & let some of the wind out of them
However as a woman I do agree partly with Captain Ed. If a woman CHOOSES to have children, I feel she should be there for them ESPECIALLY when they are young & not fitted in between her rosters. It is very difficult to have your bread buttered on both sides I feel without causing psychological harm to your children. If she makes a decision to have children she has to be willing to make a commitment & sacrifices for them. THEY are the most important issue as far as I'm concerned. But women are not baby factories & should have the right to be career women if they choose.
As far as women in the cockpit I would imagine it is not just the SIA that lag behind. Woman are often conditioned & encouraged to go for the softer, non technical subjects, partly out of choice & partly because they were not given the option in school. Men appear to take to & enjoy them more anyway, whether it is due to a difference in the male & female brain or opportunity I do not know. But there will always be careers that naturally attract more women & where they excel & the same goes for men.

Sierra, how about:

I hate to point out to you a very basic biological fact-men can't conceive. All I am saying is that children need their mother to be there especially when there young & perhaps there wouldn't be so many screwed up kids out there if this was the case. Women have always been the natural bearers, rearers & nurturers of children. I'm all for career women but all this women's lib has gone too far & I think is damaging society & our children which means our future. Women can choose whether to put having children or a career first(although I do accept that some mothers need to work out of financial necessity or a part-time working mother may actually benefit the children when they are weaned). I just think that when a woman makes the choice to have children they should get their priorities right. The career may still be there but the lost years with their kids wont be nor may the psychological damage inflicted on young children be so easily rectified.

A little touchy now Grandpa Ed.. What you just said is typical for people who actually ARE in need of help.. Remember, you´re never too old to learn.. Please just stuff your 1950´s comments on this subject, and stick to the threads where your inputs have actually been of SOME interest!!!

As a 16 year old Wannabe, I don't usually like to impose myself on the Rumours and News section of PPRuNe. But today I'm just amazed at the immaturity being shown by some pilots here!
I am determined to become a pilot, and I really respect and aspire to you people, but I can't belive some of your views that women should not be on the flight deck. I know for certain that my girl-friend is equally as capable, if not more capable than me to absorb lessons in the complexities of modern aircraft systems. If she was here now, she wouldn't believe it either.
You guys are supposed to be professinal pilots. My enormous respect of some of you has really been dented. Try to think before you type.
Thanks,
TPuk

I would never deny that children need their father's but someone has to be the breadwinner. However I am aware that being a pilot can mean spending alot of time away from home & children can end up feeling resentful, be it their father or mother.
Of course I see no reason why women shouldn't become pilots. In my time & country very few women did unless their father's were in it etc but if they have the opportunity & apptitude why not. I welcome the fact that the career barriers have broken down so much, that women have so much more belief in their abilities & so much more opportunities open to them but I still feel that women sometimes tend to shy away from technical careers out of choice.

I flew with many female pilots on Boeing airplanes and thought they were at least as good as the males, if not better since they had to excell to get to where they were. Nevertheless I don't think the average female pilot could handle the DC3 on one engine or the B737 with a serious trim problem. Nor could some of the smaller men. It is not the gender but the physical strength.
