@ruu_1982 @autobrakes3

This reminds me of a hearsay from one of our ground school instructors:

an ex-doctor, best cadet from cse9x. During graduation, he gave a great speech which you may want to use as reference:

"I became a doctor for 10 years to please my parents... Now, I'm a SQ pilot to please myself."

I'll give the same advice as @autobrakes3: To be honest and truth. No point trying to find the "perfect answer"... you will :ugh: into many walls as you try to find another "perfect answer" to cover your first one... Remember, you're not the first candidate... neither are you the last... Good luck! :ok:

bogusrif 5th Apr 2010 04:43

hmm....its been a long wait.lol.

randomx 5th Apr 2010 09:17

@ruu_1982: Like @TinyBrain and @autobrakes3 said, just be honest and tell them why you want to do the switch. Anyway, with just 2+ years of working they probably won't grill you as much.

@nt.pilot: Unfortunately the answer is no. It doesn't matter whether you're eligible or even invited to become a PR, you've got to get your PR first before they even consider you for an interview.

@autobrakes3: Actually, first generation PR don't have to serve NS. Their sons have to though.

ahsoh 6th Apr 2010 03:19

hi

is the a minimum age to apply for the cadetship with sia

Hopie 6th Apr 2010 14:40

Hello, you can apply when you reach 25.5years old for Singaporeans.

Can I ask anyone who applied in March still waiting? :)

bogusrif 6th Apr 2010 16:32

dude i applied in feb and i'm still waiting.lol.patience is a virtue in this case i guess.heh.All the best nonetheless!

Hopie 7th Apr 2010 18:06

All the best bogusrif. I only hope for the best to happen one good day. :)

bogusrif 10th Apr 2010 12:16

any news for anyone yet?

avis03 11th Apr 2010 05:59

Age Limit

Hey guys,

I applied for the cadet pilot posting in feb and i just turned 24. Ya guys think it still might be ok? I applied for SAF Pilot before and didn't get through. so yeah..

Thanks ;)

bogusrif 11th Apr 2010 09:09

well i've heard them taking in people younger than 25,so it might be a possibility.But this was like before last year,and they reduced the intake this year,so i'm not sure what their policies are now.Either way, if you get the interview,just do your best,and see how it goes.Don't know if that helped.Cheers!:ok:

avis03 11th Apr 2010 09:52

hey thanks alot man!!!

Nphl 15th Apr 2010 11:20

Hey guys,

I'm just asking if anyone of you has the same qualifications as I do. The admission criteria states that one needs to have 5 GCE 'O' Levels credits and well, sad to say, I've only got 3. However, I've noticed the importance of studies recently and am planning to go for my Bachelors (Hons) in Business Administration.

I currently am holding a Diploma in Business Administration and a Diploma in Law. Does this mean that I still can't apply for the post of Cadet Pilot due to my GCE 'O' Levels results or it is not that important?

I tried applying for the post and when it came to the question on 'Do you have at least 5 GCE 'O' Levels credits?', I clicked no and I think that is the reason why I got rejected immediately at the webpage.

Anyway, do you think I should go for Bachelors (Hons) in Business Administration of Bachelors in Aviation Management. Kinda in a dilemma right now because if I go for the former, that is when I don't get to be a pilot, at least I still have Business to fall back on. However, does a Bachelors in Aviation Management give some sort of an advantage to Cadet Pilot applicants?

Btw, I'm 23 this year. Please advise.

autobrakes3 15th Apr 2010 11:40

@Nphl,

CAAS requirements:

3.13 What qualifications will I need to apply for the initial issue of a Singapore Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)?

i) You must not be less than 18 years old (CPL) and 21 years old (ATPL)

ii) You must pass at least five subjects at the GCE 'O' Level including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject.

iii) Pass a Singapore Class 1 initial medical with a CAAS DME

The short answer to yr first question: Yes, you can apply again but you will be rejected.

As for your second question, it is a straight No. It does not give you an advantage over others. All applicants are treated the same. If I could give a small piece of advice, just study something that you are really interested in. Do not waste time and effort putting yourself through a course just because someone told you it will give you a headstart. I'm not trying to be a wet blanket but the chances of an applicant getting through to the cadet pilot stage is less than 10%. You don't want to find yourself regretting the decision to study something ya never liked.

Nphl 15th Apr 2010 12:12

Hmm, well, thanks for the reply. I was somewhat hoping for an exclusion to some of their requirements like the GCE 'O' Levels. Looks to me I've got to retake my O's again. Hopefully, I'll get through next year. :)

Macarto 15th Apr 2010 13:40

I have never seen a adult in his 20's or 30's retake their O level Examinations. Is it a common thing in Singapore?

Fantelon 15th Apr 2010 14:04

No one getting call up for 1st interview? I think they have ended 1st interview for this season. Maybe we have to wait 3 months later for the next season. What you guys think? :)

BimmerShawn 15th Apr 2010 14:27

Hey Guys, read probably almost all the pages. Can feel the excitment from all of you guys. Can't help but suck in some of the emotions and got me all excited too.

Sent in my application today. Hope to hear a reply soon. :) What was the fastest anyone got called up for an interview after sending it the application? :)

SC

bogusrif 15th Apr 2010 15:55

are there even seasons?lol.

BimmerShawn 15th Apr 2010 16:34

Think I read somewhere in the pages, or is it from another site. That interviews are carried out first Friday of every month? Oh well.. i guess no need to think too much, just wait for a reply. :)

Nphl 16th Apr 2010 01:16

Well I guess not. But it doesn't look like I've got a choice.

Nphl 16th Apr 2010 01:37

SC,

I believe there was this guy who sent in his application and got the invitation to the 1st interview the very next day. Guess he sent it at the right time though.

Good luck!

Anyway, may I know what educational qualifications you possess?

autobrakes3 16th Apr 2010 01:44

@Fantelon,

Recruitment is an on-going thing as long as the demand is there. 1st interviews are on every friday of the week and up to 50 applicants get screened each time. If all 200 applicants of the month post their interview dates here, wouldn't it be a huge huge clutter?

@BimmerShawn and all,

I am not trying to be a wet blanket here but please dont get too excited over this application. In fact, dont even get excited at all. Getting called up for an interview is not a rarity and the journey does not end here. There is still a final interview and as I have mentioned, the chance of application to contract offer is less than 10%, perhaps even 5%.

Most of the time, I read about people getting so hyped up over the fact that SIA is hiring and "Yay! I have been called up for an interview" syndrome. Instead of letting the excitement get the better of you, channel this energy into useful work like reading up on aviation stuff. In fact, for anyone who is serious about this occupation i suggest more than just reading. Study and memorise like this is yr A levels or final year in Uni!

Unfortunately, most people fall into the trap thinking that SIA has "invited" them for an interview. You will see the shocked faces when they realised there are 49 others in the same waiting room. :bored:

BimmerShawn 16th Apr 2010 01:51

Autobrakes:
Yeah I agree with you buddy. I remembered when I applied for WSO Fighter a few years ago. That time I was still in National Service. I had passed the compass test, and had been called up for 2nd round, which was board interview.

When I reach CMPB, there were probably like you said, 50 people there. Probably more then half, 1st LT, or 2n LT from the army. I was the only sergeant there from the Police Force. I was alittle taken aback. So I perfectly understand what you're trying to say. :)

FaDe2BlAk 16th Apr 2010 20:51

1st interview

Waited more than 2 hours to get into the room and got drilled. Don't read some of the 95 pages here, read ALL of them. Most of the questions asked have been posted here before. Regret not asking a more intellectual question when it was my turn to ask one. No turning back for me, looking forward to a 2nd if i get one.

bogusrif 17th Apr 2010 10:12

is it just me,or does the recruitment site go straight to silkair now?I see they're fiercely expanding.haha.

cheay028 18th Apr 2010 20:13

Hi this is my first post

Hi all,

I have read quite alot of the post. A big thank you to all who have contributed advice.

I realise that there seems to be no conclusive beyond all reasonable doubt about the min age that SIA will hire. Some say 25+ some say 26 and then there are some that say if RSAF doesnt take you or if you didnt make it through RSAF then you can apply way before 26.

Anyway I am asking this because I am a self sponsored student and will be acquirring my CPL (Australian CASA) when I am 24. I am 23 now. I also read here that my Aussie CPL can be converted but looks tricky. Some people even said it was useless. (I dont care coz i really love flying ta boh leh tahan haha)

So I have a 2 year gap if the min age is 26. If I dont fly for 2 years then my flying skill is going to deterioate.

In my CPL course I have the option of gettting a rating for the CESSNA. But if I am not getting a job in Australia (coz apply for SIA at 24) I wont need that rating. My chief instructor told me this coz he knows I want to make my training as cost effective as possible.

Thus what is the min age that you can apply for SIA? is it 24?

Coz if it is then I will go ahead with getting my CESSNA rating. So I can try and find a flying job in Australia for 2 years.

If it isnt then I dont think i will go ahead with the CESSNA rating.

Also anyone here knows where I can find flying jobs in Australia?

Thank you to anyone who responds and advices

Best regards
Andrew

autobrakes3 19th Apr 2010 01:49

@cheay028

You are spot on. Although on the website it says 26, I have seen guys as young as 24 (turning 25 in the same year) get in. Btw, I don't quite get you. What is this CESSNA rating you are talking about? You need an A/C rating before you can acquire a CPL. Is your CFI trying to "smoke" you?

My old CASA CPL states under XII A/C Endorsements: M/E Aeroplanes <5700kg, PA34, LR45 etc etc. A CPL is like a driving license - it states the category or specific type of a/c you are qualified to fly. Getting a CPL does not entitle you to fly every a/c in the world.

If you are worried about converting your license when you are back in SG, pls don't! The process of converting your license is pretty seamless since CAAS has recently "agreed" to convert all licenses, assuming you have done all the relevant ATPL papers. You would just need to sit through the Air Law and Perf A papers if yr previous exam credits are valid. On top of that, an IR test with a CAAS approved examiner. Now, the tricky part is getting a job in Singapore because CAAS will only convert your license after you are hired by a local operator.

Nphl 19th Apr 2010 02:49

@cheay028

Hey, care to share where are you taking your flying classes and how much did you pay in total? Am thinking of Massey University.

Ankh82 22nd Apr 2010 16:21

Hi Guys,

For those of you who have done Lasik before, how do you prove your pre-lasik eyesight for SIA interview/medical? I had a card from my lasik centre. Will this be enough or will they require a letter from the doc?

Pls help.... Thanks a lot...

Fantelon 26th Apr 2010 13:05

Hi guys,

I have being called up for interview on 07 May. But I just joined a new company and it is inconvenience for me to apply leave to attend the interview. 1) Do you think I can request my interview to postpone it to June in my return email? 2) Where can I do my eyesight and colour test. Normal GP cannot do eyesight test without specs?

silencer22 26th Apr 2010 14:24

if you could, it would b better for you to attend the interview instead of postponing it

normal GP could do those test, anyhow, you could always check with the clinic assistants b4hand

lampoon 26th Apr 2010 15:42

I know of people who fly in internationally just to attend the interview, regardless how much of an inconvenience it may cause. These individuals got through the interviews.

If you postpone it, it says alot about how much you want in. Sad to say, but employers these days can be *that* judgmental. Trust me, whatever it takes, don't ask for a postponement. You may not even get a reply after that.

gtwagon9191 27th Apr 2010 01:53

hi andrew@cheay028
SIA will not recongnise aussie CPL...so even if u got Auz CPL..you will still need to go thru the whole training program...just that they let you fly abt 30hrs less on the initial flying program...thats abt it...
the only atpl licence they recongnise is NZ,UK,Msia licence...you can check this with CAAS...for the list of licence singapore CAAS recongnise...

if you are in RSAF and have dropout from the training program...you can apply for SIA if you are 26 or less...if not they will not look at you after 26...

all the best...
cheers

autobrakes3 27th Apr 2010 08:16

@gtwagon9191,

Its not SIA that does the recognition. Previously, CAAS only recognises a few licenses but as of last year, they are willing to convert most licenses around the world. There are a few clauses of course.

As for the RSAF 26 year old ruling, its a myth. Over the years, I have not met a Singaporean that joined earlier than 24 yrs old.

jungle-mania 27th Apr 2010 15:40

Hi gtwagon,

I am currently residing in Australia and I am considering taking my CPL as it is packaged together with a PPL, in this case, does it mean it makes more sense to have a PPL alone to stand a better chance?

autobrakes3 28th Apr 2010 03:28

@jungle-mania,

sorry to interrupt as i know yr question was directed at someone else. CAAS may and would most likely convert a CASA CPL now provided you have met the training requirements (e.g. 100 hrs PIC, 50 hrs visual nav etc etc) and the necessary examination credits.

If you are flying for the love of it, by all means go ahead and get a CPL!

If you are there for the sake of a "better chance" whatever that means, I must repeat for the umpteen time - GETTING A LICENSE DOES NOT GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE during the selection process. You are probably there for the wrong reason.

You will not be the first CPL holder to apply and neither will you be the last. A lot if not most CPL holders get rejected. Yes, the truth hurts!

gtwagon9191 28th Apr 2010 04:02

@autobrakes
yes...you are quite right that its not up to SIA to decide if they recongise the licence...its CAAS...things might have change already...its better to check with CAAS...they will be able to provide the correct answer...
i known of people that has join before 26...due to drop out from flight training from RSAF...
its also true that having a flying licence doesnt give you any advantage to the selection process...

cheers...

gtwagon9191 28th Apr 2010 04:10

@jungle mania

it depends on how deep is your pocket....

like i have said...having a CPL..doesnt grant you any privilege towards the selection process....its only till you have been selected...then the cpl or frozen atpl will be of use...

Idngaf 28th Apr 2010 14:31

Wish my money make love in my pocket and multiply...

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how much would it cost to do till CPL/ATPL (from the basic) at seletar?
It terms of cost i mean, by paying by your own without scholorship... and is there any other place in singapore to train.

Thanks guysss... Appreciate your help

jungle-mania 28th Apr 2010 15:10

Thanks everyone for their replies, I am actually based next to Jandakot Airport in Perth, so I was seriously thinking of doing a CPL since it is so near my house, however the high cost is another issue for me.

I probably go get a GFPT first and work from there. I won't rule out applying for other airlines, but heart is where home is, and being in Singapore would be my preferred option.
