O level result

Hello guys,
I've been doubt about the 'O' level result. I'm having all kinds of answer about the matter. One of my friend currently a SIA cadet telling me that, 'O' level is not that important, a degree is sufficent. By the way, SIA not weighting a lot on acedemy qualification, but personality, leadership, general knowledge and etc. I did badly for my 'O' level(SPM in Malaysia). Any suggestion for that? I have more than 5 credits, but not for my physic. I got B for my information system, does it consider as a science sub? From the website, stated degree with 5 credit in 'O' level.
Correct me if i'm wrong.....
Anyone could help me with this??
Thanks.

clown889 5th Sep 2006 07:29

the O levels or equivalent is a must.
Science can be combined science, not necessary pure science as stated in the website.. It had been advertised in the papers before as a "science" subject and not specifically a "pure science".
it is correct to say they do not look into your results once you are called for interview.... else they wouldn't call u at all right?
quite a few guys without degrees got in too. but i would reckon the ratio to be 20% non grads to 80% grads.

NinerVictor 5th Sep 2006 15:30

clown889 is pretty much right about the ratio of grads to non-grads. The 'O' Level criteria that you guys have been talking about is not set by SIA. It's a requirement by CAAS for the issue of a CPL/ATPL. The following is an extract from the SASP2:

Educational Standards

5. An applicant, whether ab initio or requiring an abridged course will not be accepted for training on an approved training course for the issue of a Commercial Pilot Licence course unless he hold a General Certificate of Education with passes in five subjects at ordinary level including English
Language, Mathematics and a Science subject.

6. Applicants who possess other equivalent educational qualifications or foreign professional pilot’s licences should seek advice from the CAAS to determine whether their qualifications can be accepted for this purpose.
Go google for SASP2. Heaps of info there. Knightwhosays_NI's thread provides some good insight too.

To sum it up, having 5 passes for 'O' Level or equivalent is a requirement (by CAAS), and the pure science thingy is a preference (by SIA). There are no compromise about requirements set by CAAS, but preferences set by SIA is not hard and fast depending on the interviewer. People without pure science subjects have been selected in the past, but I've not heard of anyone without 5 passes at 'O' Level getting selected. Cheers.

help..

The 5 credits for 'O' level(SPM) can include Bahasa Malaysia??

mike79 7th Sep 2006 05:25

Hi guys...

Thanks for the replies. Anyway I messaged CAAS to ask about their criterias on the 5 'O' lvl credits thing. They replied to me saying that the criteria of 5 'O' lvls is set by SIA themselves.

Anyway.. don't think I would have much chances in entering the company now that being said. Is there anyone here that can tell me if there are other companies which does not need all 5? I've got only 3.

To thk917: All 5 'O' lvl credits as long as u have english, maths and science (preferably physics). Doesn't really matter what the other 2 subjects are i think.

1st Interview 1.45pm on Thursday, 14 Sept.

Who else is going? All the best.

Mike, I assumed that you are born in 1979 which also means that you are 27.
Go retake your O levels as a private candidate and try again. Retaking your O levels is not asking a few years of your time, only 1 year. :ok:

If you need what you do not have, go work for it. If you think you do not have the time, then forget about this career jump. :hmm:

Any one has any idea how many 1st interviews can u not pass before SIA gives up on you? I had not made it through the 1st interviews I've attended, and the intervals have been >6 months before they considered me again, but could I have been waiting for nothing if SIA has taken out my name for considerations?

Question: Where can I pick up my PPL and how much would it cost? WHere can I attend private lessons to pick up flying?

Would appreciate any advice. :) Thank you

2 first interviews, unless you did something to improve yourself. Do a search here, you'll find that all of your questions have been asked and answered before.

tangotango 4th Oct 2006 01:07

Hi Knight, thank you for your reply. So if I have failed my 1st interviews twice, I can forget about SQ calling me again?

sgcloudchaser 6th Oct 2006 16:22

I have a more complicated question.

Failed first 1st interview
Passed second 1st interview
Passed tea-party
Went for medical
Told to be unsuccessful

Chance for reapplication?

tango tango, unless you have improved yourself in some way, e.g. academic qualifications or aviation licence, your chances are very slim. And with SIA's new computerised system, it's much harder for anyone to slip thru the cracks.
sgcloudchaser, only 1 chance for anything after the 1st interview....... unless you've improved yourself in some way (see above).

What is a station manager?

Hi. I'm sorry if this is not the right forum for this issue. I've been trying to find out what exactly does a SIA station manager do? Hope some kind soul can help clear my doubt on this matter. Thanks so much. :)

Some DO slip thru the cracks, but as I mentioned earlier, the company's stand is 2 1st attempts, unless some self improvement has been made. A lot of guys have helped out in that department in between training and this rule, among others, has always been stressed.

It could have been easier in the past for some to slip thru, but it's more difficult now that the system's almost entirely computerised. There could be a few reasons why you're going for your 3rd interview. One that springs to mind is that maybe the previous system didn't record your previous attempt/s cuz of an administrative oversight.

But you know of pple who have made it thru after 5 interview attempts without any self-improvement? One of whom's a 2nd officer? Is he a white horse? Sorry if i seem a little dubious but this is something i have to see to believe. Can u PM me and reveal his name? If he's a second officer then I may know him. I'd understand if you can't of course, but this i really got to see for myself. Btw, where have you read on this site where a guy's got thru after 7 attempts? Not doubting you, just want to have a look at it myself.

Anyway, good luck on the interview.

I've only heard of 1 case of this FO who got rejected after medical, but who then upgraded himself and got a degree, before going through all the rounds again.

Well, then I have to get a Master/PhD in this case.
Oh btw, do you know why that FO got rejected after the medical?

do you know how long a master/phd takes? by the time your done you'll be too old.

rssid 16th Oct 2006 06:45

Hi all ok I got McCully and got blasted by him for forgeting some stuff ... suffice to say that yes he is stern and O level grades are important to him. However I was truthful and did my best to answer him. Questions directed to me would not be asked to anyone else so dont bother asking me.

Those with prior experience in flying pls read up on your prev a/c and checks thats all I can say. Remember PRE STALL CHECKS he is LOOKING FOR HASELL ! I forgot the S and got blasted !

Btw: H=Height, A=Airframe, S=Security, E=Engine, L=Lookout, L=Location

For now I am through to the next round of interviews happening tomorrow, good luck to the rest !

no idea ... btw, if any one of you guys have seriously tried all means to be accepted into the abinitio scheme but unfortunately failed, SFC is starting to regularly take in paying customers. If you can afford more than 100k, this will allow you to follow the normal course of a cadet pilot all the way from ATPLs to getting your CPL/IR at Jandakot. Expensive, but at least you're taking a step closer to becoming a commercial pilot.

rssid 19th Oct 2006 03:54

Hi guys went through the 2nd interview + sit test and tea party yesterday. Suffice to say I am throught to the medical tomorrow.

Sit test was design an airport individually then present it to the group. Then the whole group was to come together and design an airport and present it. Part 2 was to build a tower from lego bricks and finally debrief for the whole group. Do take note that there were time constraints so 1 guy has to lookout for the time left.

2nd round of interviews I faced a full panel of 6 people including Mcully again, more questions of the technical kind like engine type of fuel used and where boeing is made( USA ohio) and airbus(france tolose<--dunno how to spell). Also which countries are represented in airbus( france, germany, spain, UK). He aslso asked about what new a/c are coming into the fleet so I said the A380 and 787. He asked what so special about the 787 and was looking for the ans of carbon fibre and alloy composite materials used to construct the airframe, cutting down on weight and more efficient engines. He also asked about the GPS systems and flight mgt systems in a mordern a/c, well that all i can say for now i guess, wish me luck !

rssid 23rd Oct 2006 11:50

hey guys i've finished medical back to waiting i suppose ............

rssid 27th Oct 2006 02:34

Hi guys a few more common questions are also about the principles of flight like how does an aircraft turn( roll with ailerons primary effect, secondary effect is a yaw) along its longitudinal axis(from nose to tail) , Climb/desend (pitch up/down with elevator or horizontal stabilator along it's lateral axis(wing tip to wing tip) and yaw (primary effect, secondary effect is a roll) left/right(with rudder in vertical stabilator) . Good luck to the rest !

Anyone receive notice to go OBS in december alrdy? I had my medical 2 weeks ago, still eager waiting for the confirmation that i made it...

Mr_Aspiring_Pilot 1st Nov 2006 10:20

hello!

was wondering if someone could enlighten me on how to check when SIA opens its doors to cadet pilot applications?

apart from the classifieds of course. but so far i've only seen one such advertisement made by SIA..=/

Hope to be a pilot 3rd Nov 2006 01:22

My worries

Hi all,

I am currently age 23, had perviously applied for the post of cadet pilot twice, last year whereby i send in my hard copy application and this year during july, an online application. Till date, i had not had any respond from SIA.

As i did not meet the pre-requirement that SIA had set. I have 5 O level but i did not pass my english during my 1st attempt, during my 2nd attempt, i manage to attain a C6. I also do not have a pure science sub but only combine science. :(

Perviously, i am an airforce drop out during the air grading phase.

Currently i am a diploma holder from TP and currently studying in an engineering course in NTU. I will be graduating in half a years time.

I really hope to be a cadet pilot after my graduation but was advice by some friends of mine, my chances are very slim as i did not attain a pass in english during my 1st attempt. :( Some also told me that i actually did not meet the age requirement yet. I heard that once you are an airforce drop out, you could apply anytime after the age of 23.

Could anyone clarify my doubt and give me some advice?

Thanks so much!

chullan 3rd Nov 2006 12:02

you can submit the application online now... they would call you when they need people... goto there website www.singaporeair.com n look for career section

SIA cadet pilot selection frequency?

Dear All,

I find this forum very informative and helpful. Thanks a lot for everyone.

Here I got some questions, please advice:

1. Is there any fix timing (mean that twice a year or etc.) for cadet pilot program selection? I did send in my online application since July 06, untill today i still do not have any news from SIA? Is there any time frame or lead time from SIA between the application to the date SIA call up for interview?

2. I did meet the all the requirements in academy (one sitting for SPM and I did completed my degree in engineering last year) but one thing lack is I'm only 1.64m! Is it short of 1cm will disqualified me from the application?

Hope can have your advice soon.

Regards,
Elixees

1) if I attended the 1st interview on 16th Nov, when would I get a reply from them?

2) I didn't get the trigger question. Am I out?

It will take approx. a month for you to be called on next interview but there is no confirmation. Some have been called within a week.
As for trigger quest....the norm interview ques have been revised i suppose. In view of that i guess the old trigger ques was not triggered enough. Cheers mate

Hi guys...

Sorry if this seems to be in the wrong thread or something but is there any kind soul here gracious enough to reveal how they structure their resume? or cover letter? :P

Sorry if it seems out of place but just curious and would like some guidance.

Thanks for any kind of help or advice rendered. :D

graco 21st Nov 2006 05:46

mike79,

I take it that you want to apply for SIA cadetship. If you are then you don't need to write a resume or a cover letter. Just go and create a profile and fill in your details, apply for the position and follow the rest of the instructions that you want. I include the link below. I hope it helps.

cheers and all the best
