Exo, may i know when was your medical ? I went for mine in April, no word since then.

exothermic 21st May 2007 07:09

my medical was held on 11th May. when was yours?

Merlinrabbi 21st May 2007 15:29

When will we know the fleet we're getting?

in 2 years time mate :E you are getting just a bit ahead of yourself.

captain_jim 21st May 2007 18:08

They will give you the BWB X-48

When will we know which fleet we re flying ?

Well SIA is always first to fly new things so you will probably get the blended wing body X-48 (google it ) from boeing to fly when it arrives in SIA s fleet ha ha.

uluwatu06 30th May 2007 10:47

I got rejected because my pre-LASIK astig was above 200 degs. Apparently, they still look at pre-op eye condition.

saxmachine05 2nd Jun 2007 18:48

Help~~!! My application is rejected?!

dear folks,
I've just logged on SIA website and checked the status of my application of cadet pilot.
It's REJECTED!
I don't understand why I'm rejected.
I've fulfilled all the requirements..
Anyone knows what number i can call for the appeal?
I need to know the reason... :( help...

Thermal Image 3rd Jun 2007 05:13

I don't understand why I'm rejected.
I've fulfilled all the requirements..
You equate fulfilling requirements with being selected. That is the problem.

If you have been around a little longer you will know that eligibility DOES NOT equal selection, whether it be for this job or any other job. If you fulfill the requirements for taking part in a lottery (yes there are requirements), does it mean that you will surely win?

Anyone knows what number i can call for the appeal?
The reason for the computerised application process is so that they can weed out undesirable applications not worth further consideration. They get hundreds of such applications a month which are doomed to fail from the start. If they don't have the time or motivation to process your application further, do you think they have time to entertain your queries? They are not career counsellors.

It's just one of the many harsh facts of life. Move on.

Or if you can be bothered, read this thread AND other related threads to have more insight on the selection process and how to succeed the second time around. It can and DOES happen if you can be bothered to help yourself instead of just asking, "Why ah? Why ah? Why I rejected ah?".

uluwatu06 3rd Jun 2007 06:04

Hi TI,

I fully understand the need to filter out undesirable applicants from the start.

But if my vision now is so much better than someone who is wearing specs with worse astig n myopia than me (but manage to get an interview), i feel that it isn't a fair process.

Why do SIA look at pre-LASIK conditions? It has no bearings on post-LASIK conditions. Once the eyes have stabilised (before LASIK and around 21 of age), chances are remote that it will revert to pre-LASIK conditions.

But then, oh well, move on like what you said.

Thermal Image 3rd Jun 2007 06:29

The short answer is: supply and demand.

SIA is not exactly a ground breaker in cadet recruitment. Why still no female cadets for SIA (Silkair yes)? So why should these people in charge stick their necks out just because of what you (a mere cadet candidate and not some world renowned industry expert on LASIK) say?

Until such time that they become so short of applicants (and then start relooking at applicants that were OK except for the eyesight component), they will just take the easy path and select the most qualified.

The long answer is: attitudes.

Until today the requirements / preference is that pilots wear spectacles as opposed to contact lenses. How long have contact lenses been around? Compare that with LASIK - it is still an evolving technology and not even half as old as contact lens technology.

If the authorities are STILL reluctant to embrace contact lens technology, do you think they will just give a blanket approval to LASIK? Contrast that with glasses - wear glasses? No problem lah, just wear them when you work and have a spare pair handy. Can you see the difference in attitudes?

And of course, CAAS bureaucrats being what they are, will not risk standing up and proclaiming: Hear Ye! Hear Ye! LASIK is now 100% approved, same legal standing as glasses.

So, you want to take up this crusade, or just move on?

HenC 3rd Jun 2007 07:25

Hi Thermal Image,

I was one of those rejected by SIA for the cadet pilot interview..attended all the way till tea party but no medical.

I had informed them of my high myopia (but now corrected to 6/6 with a pair of intra-ocular lens) and then the final interview ended rather abruptly.

I'm now doing my CPL/ATPL in Kelantan (a DCA recognised school), do you think I still stand a chance of being a cadet with SIA after graduation?

uluwatu06 3rd Jun 2007 11:53

Hi TI,

I don't mind being in Silkair either.

Your points are duly noted, and of course, i fully understand that you don't speak for SIA as a whole. So i won't believe wholeheartedly. Unless you are Foreshaw. But its rather annoying to have friends who apply for fun and was granted an interview and get rejected. They jolly well know they didn't prepare anything.

I'll see how i'll proceed from here. Crusade? Nah. Possible, but no worries, no crusade against you.

Thanks.

dream747 3rd Jun 2007 13:09

What are the qualities the selection panel are looking out for in selecting the cadets? I'm not trying to create personalities or get people to act like 'the preferred' but I'm just wondering as sometimes it's quite disheartening to see them rejecting eligible people who are genuinely interested in flying and not the money or status.

At the end of the day it's up to them but out of curiosity I'm wondering what are they really looking out for.

Thermal Image 3rd Jun 2007 14:22

I had informed them of my high myopia (but now corrected to 6/6 with a pair of intra-ocular lens) and then the final interview ended rather abruptly.
Looks like the high myopia and end of interview have something to do with each other.

Whatever the chances are, what does it cost you to apply again? Just some time and incidental expenses, correct? The worst they can say is no. Suppose they say yes, then you have to be prepared to commit another 2 years or so doing the whole course all over again at Seletar or wherever it may be. So, one step at a time. Finish your course, and finish well.

Thermal Image 3rd Jun 2007 14:29

What are the qualities the selection panel are looking out for in selecting the cadets?
Well, let's start with curiosity - *ticks box.*

OK, next item: Initiative - hmm - no evidence of initiative.

Try searching this corner of PPRuNe for Knightwhosays_NI. Start from there.

HenC 4th Jun 2007 01:12

Hi TI, appreciate the reply.

Actually I was wondering if SIA would consider me in the advanced phase (Learjet) once I attain my ATPL, taking into account my high myopia history, that is.

I think it's slim, based on you 'supply and demand' analogy.

Well, no harm for me enquiring once I'm near graduation. :)

Would you happen to know anything about SFC.....if they offer any instructor bond training for private ATPL grads?

Ghostrider777 4th Jun 2007 15:10

Hi,

Anyone knows of any recent cadet intake in SIA for malaysian citizen...I'm having the indication that they are not taking anyone now...any insights...thanks....

Yes they have trained private ATPL holders to be their instructors. There is a bond.

Dear saxmachine05,

Don't fret, there might be a glimmer of hope.

The same thing happened to me. I was shocked when I filled in all the fields and answered the questions and when I clicked Submit, the status reflected was "Rejected". I was flabbergasted and then I called the SIA HR department to ask why.

Luckily I called. It turned out that two out of the list of 15 questions I answered were incoherent and contradicted one another. That was why the system could not understand the response and auto reject.

The lady who answered my call was kind and helped me correct that technical glitch. And the status of application changed from "Rejected" to "Job Application"

A week later, I was shortlisted for interview. :)

Don't just give up hope. Fight for it!

saxmachine05 12th Jun 2007 08:02

Thanks a lot! pilotdreamer!
I've actually re-submitted the application on 04-june-07.
Till now.. it's "Job Application".
How long the SQ call you for interview since you rectified your application with help of the SQ HR department ppl?

When's your 1st interview? :)
Can I know the contact number of SQ HR department?

pilotdreamer 12th Jun 2007 09:59

SIA Application

Hi Saxmachine05,

Mine was a week after they rectified my application status.

As for my first interview, I prefer not to share it here if you can respect that.

Have sent you a PM.

Good luck to you

1st round on 7 June '07

Hey guys, anyone here went for the 1st round on the 7th this month?
Any word from SQ yet?

Could anyone also shed light on how many guys are there in each cohort?

SIA ccp 1st round failure

Hello every one,
I am new to here, but just another guy who want to be a pilot since young. here is my story,

I attend sia ccp 1st interview this year feb, but failed, in the application database, the status is still under "confirmed", it seem that there is no changing of status till today. From the thread, some people saying 6month is the shortest period you need to wait for before another application, can some one confirm this?

Also, i would like to call up the SIA HR like what pilot dreamer did to clarify the my status. The road to be a pilot is long, but i ain't going to give up. I really appreciate the people in this forum, they are helping one and other. thank in advance for the advice.:ok:

hi everyone,

just a greeting to everyone here. Nice to know u all. some self intro about myself.

currently i am 25 (turning 26 this yr). because i just graduated from polytechnic last yr and underaged, i cannot try for the SQ cadet pilot. now i am with SIA as cabin crew. dreams of being a cockpit crew grew even stronger came after an incident when the captain allow me to sit in for the landing. each time i go inside the cockpit to serve the tech crew, whenever i see the skies outside the window, it looks so pretty and so different from the view i am seeing always at the door exit/cabin windows. fell in love with the passion of flying instead of sitting behind. : )

occasionally, i will communicate with the tech crews during my stayover or flight, and so luckily, during my last flight, my senior FO gave me this forum link and told me that i can find more people of my kind. i thank him for it and hope 1 day i will be able to sit side by side flying with him.

there are a couple of questions in my mind but i shall not shoot them now. i guess i will run thru all of the threads first. maybe the qns had been asked b4.

anyway nice knowing u guys..

cheers,

ekenikichi

PS, any cabin crew crossed-over pilots here? to my knowledge, there should quite a handful.:)

vitus 19th Jun 2007 21:50

Hi guys, with regards to contact lenses, just for an update, CAAS now allows for some leeway to wearing contacts for flying.

Whereas previously in the license it was holder to wear spectacles for vision correction,

Now it states license holder is to wear lenses for vision correction. Most of us have taken it to mean that we can wear contacts for flying.

all the best to your flying dreams

uluwatu06 21st Jun 2007 01:17

how.... about... ppl.. who.. have.. gone... thru.. LASIK.. to... achieve.. his.. dream...

We are being sidelined. Sigh.

Just called up HR, and was told that pre-LASIK astigs of more than 200 degrees are not accepted. YES.. u read that correctly.. PRE-lasik...

Pilot interview

Dear saxmachine05,

Told you? Have faith and your dream will come true.

Any family doctor should be able to do it for you.

When is your interview?

SST77 24th Jun 2007 09:58

Anyone going for 2nd round on 4th July '07?

Hey guys,

Anyone out there going for the 2nd round interview on the 4th next month? We should get in touch!

Saxmachine05,

You can get the test done at any GP. Got mine done at a clinic near home. Remember NOT to go to an optician to do the test, though it'd be good to check out your actual degree (if any). Good luck for your interview!

Cheers.

yellowbirdy 25th Jun 2007 11:49

When was your 1st interview?

Hi SST77,

Can I know when did u attend your 1st interview? I went on 15 Jun for my 1st interview but so far not shortlisted for the 2nd interview yet. Hope I get some good news this week....

SST77 25th Jun 2007 12:00

Hi yellowbirdy,

Went for first round on 06 June. Waited ~2 weeks for a reply. Don't fret! It's early days yet... I know of someone who waited almost a whole month before he got the green light for the 2nd round! Have faith! And good luck!

Cheers.

yellowbirdy 25th Jun 2007 12:15

Hi SST77

Thanks. Will keep checking my email in the meantime then.... Good luck to you too next week!:ok:

Another sad case of LASIK

Hi Uluwatu06

I guess we're both in the same boat. I had pre-lasik short-sightedness of almost 700 degrees (7.00 D). I went for my first interview back in 2005 when there was no need to declare about corrections with LASIK. Unfortunately, I was not shortlisted for further rounds of selection. But I did not give up. Despite being busy with my postgraduate studies then, I tried to read up more on aviation. In a way, I was lucky to get another chance for a first interview in 2006. This time, however, candidates had to declare whether they had gone through LASIK and the pre-ops short-sightedness.

From your posting and the info you got from HR, I guess that my LASIK declaration must be the reason why I got a very quick rejection email from Joyce the very next morning after the interview.

Sighz... I guess sometimes in life we just have to let go of our dreams. We have tried our best, so it is not our fault... because some things are just beyond our control. I am already 30 this year and I don't think CAAS or SQ will change their hiring policy that soon, as long as there are always candidates for the HR/senior pilots to choose from.

I wish you guys who are going for your interviews all the best. Cheers.

SST77 6th Jul 2007 14:50

Asthmatic pilot?

Anyone know of whether there's a precedent set for childhood asthma sufferers when it comes to clearing the medical round for SQ?

Anyone in the same boat had ST Aeromed request for a MCT challenge or full volume flow spirometry test?

dhaneeshy 16th Jul 2007 13:03

OBS 131 on 23th August

Hey guys, i have cleared my medical back on 9 July 2007. If i am not mistaken, the next OBS batch 131 would commence on 23th August 2007. I would like to know if there's anyone who has been called up for batch 131. :) So far, i have spoken to a person who is confirmed to be in that batch, but his case was special because he delayed his training which was supposed to be with the batch 130 (13th July).

LittleFish 30th Jul 2007 07:36

Hi everyone, my maiden post here...

I am called up for my 1st interview on 16Aug07, but the problem is I will only be turning 25 two days later (ie on the 18thAug).

From what I have gathered from this thread, the min age requirement is 25.5-26 yo right? So I was a bit shocked they called me up for the interview even though I have clearly stated my birthdate on the application form in singaporeair.com.
Will I be wasting my time if I were to go for the interview this coming 16thAug? ('cos I actually have classes that day; will probably be skipping them should I go for the interview.)

Please advice as I need to send an email back to joyce by 2ndAug.

Cheers

Proviso: I will only be finishing my last sem in NUS this coming dec( by the 1st week of dec). Went to the SIA walk-in cabin crew interview for experience (the interviews i mean) and managed to pass through all the 4 rds. And they are willing to hold it for me. Basically I applied for the steward position to wait till I am eligible (ie 'old' enough) for the position of cadet pilot. Now I am wondering will the position of tech crew be "holdable"??
