Safest airline is Finnair or Qantas ?

I think people need to get a grip - the difference in "safety" between say Finnair and any other European or N American airline is in real terms miniscule. You are in far more danger every time you cross the road or drive your car

IF, and only if, your travels take you to Africa South of the Sahara, parts of Russia or Indonesia your risks will be higher but believe it or not even in these places the skies are not full of falling aluminium. Your chances of accident are roughly the same as they were in the USA and Europe in say the 1960's. If this frightens or worries you DON'T GO.

For almost all airlines the chances of accidents are almost random, not systemic

Folks,
One thing this thread illustrates is what a useless word "safe" is, "safe/safety" is a perception.
Grandma looking from the kitchen window at grandson poking the Bull Mastiff in the eye with a stick has a completely different concept of safe than said grandson.
We should all be talking about risk, which can be measured, and risk management.
I know it is trite to say it, but: "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it".
Safe is a dimensionless and largely emotive term, for management purposes (but not propaganda and spin --- because every sentient member of the public believes they know "what is safe") lets talk rationally about risk.

Seems like it was just one of those Rumsfeldian events that just, you know, happened.

Ryanair aren't IATA IOSA certified so that leaves them comparatively worse off on most ratings systems against airlines that are on the IOSA register.

Who could have the inside knowledge to come to those conclusions globally? Certainly not any armchair web-dataminers.
It's okay to want "simple answers" the reality might still be more complex.
