Do you share the advice of some that if you need to crack the throttle open to start a hot engine its best to switch the governor off as an additional safeguard?
Hot engines start without the throttle open and without any priming. And I always start with the governor off in any case. Seen too many surprised by the sudden rise in revs.

And, since a couple of incidents where the so-called governor has caused the engine to run away (due to oil in magnetos), have been extremely cautious with the device.

Ok, I'm next to fly this oversped R44, what can I see on an 'A' check? Anything?
Ripples on the blades, anything when doing a full and free?
What's the likely failure mode?

Hard to generalise - depends on degree of MR overspeed. However, you should look closely at the head and take a torch up there with you looking for any signs of stress near the bearings. If it feels well out of balance at start-up and there were no previous reports, then have it checked by an engineer or at least an experienced pilot/instructor.

Rippled blades very rare.

Engine overspeed is easy to spot - the cooling fan nut. If the white lines don't line-up, then it has likely been oversped at start-up.

"Faliure mode" - again depends on amount of overspeed. You would most likely (with MR) encounter severe vibrations well before failure.

Engine - loss of power. Do a power check at 100% on the ground. If you don't see 13" MAP (on a Raven II), then talk to an engineer. Oversped engines suffer from valves hitting pistons, bent stems and therefore loss of compression. (Plus damaged bearings at the crank/con rod whic is less obvious).

R44 RII Temp safety notice (high temps)

Anyone have any updated info on that investigation where the new machine had engine failure on its maiden flight? does that temp safety Notice for ops in temps over 41 degrees C still stand?

And while we're at it, as we're coming into summer over here, does anyone have any tips for operating Raven II in hot/humid conditions? Have experienced a few vapour lock issues on hot starts, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

MR overspeed

Any engineers out there able to reply to my post in detail? None so far apart from some advice on (3)....

1. My understanding is that the spindle bearings suffer rapid wear if the thing has suffered an overspeed. If an aircraft has done, say 50 hours since an overspeed and seems otherwise perfectly normal - is it likely that the damage will be restricted purely to the spindle bearings?
2. Would you always change both bearings if one is found to be damaged and the other looks OK?
3. If the thing has suffered a MR overspeed, is there an immediate check that can be carried out? I would guess that's the time to sell a machine - 'oops, somebody elses problem'...
4. How much are the bearings from Robinsons and how many hours does the job take?

Thanks a lot

Jack

Auschick, this may be of interest to you!

It states it the R44 P.O.H, as an operating limitation, that the R44 (Raven 1 at least) cannot be operated in conditions of ISA + 23', now i know florida and california etc... may well be in these conditions alot of the time, and the helis are made and tested in cali..

But i'm just putting it out there!

Peace!

Peace man.....woman.... ......don't have a Raven I manual on hand (would someone PM me if they have one please?), but can't see anything like that in the Raven II manual? so wouldn't that void any warranty/insurance claim? Anyways, emailed RHC and that notice is still in force for Raven II so guess they're still investigating...

Doors off flying??

Does anyone know the rules regarding flying the R22 and R44 in the UK with out all/any of the doors off?

I was told an advisory had come out saying only the right/pilot side door/doors should be removed incase anything flys out of the left side......

Would love to know the real rules on this.

Thanks in advance

It's all in the POH/Flight manual. There are no other rules.

Mixture in, quick flick on the prime and start immediately with the mixture in, shouldn't give you any problems.

Cheers

Does anyone know how much it costs to overhaul a Raven 1 these days. This would be the first cycle overhaul.

Also on a separate topic does anyone know how to get information on long range / bag tanks to go in the back seats. I'm sure they exist or Murray et al wouldn't have made round in their 44...

Generalspecific, you should be able to figure out the price from the Raven 1 Operation Cost sheet at the RHC web site.

Engine overhaul $29,200
Hour Aircraft Overhaul Parts Kit $110,000
Labor 240 Manhours @ $70 per hour

Some service centers will be able to do it cheaper, and I am sure the above is not complete. If you do it at RHC you'll have to ship the bird to Torrance, but it goes straight back into the production line.

Does the HKAC actually rebuild their ships? I remember a year ago or two there was an overhauled R22 (WE or WD?), but not sure who was doing it.

As for the bag tanks for the back seats, I have done extensive research a year ago and found that there are a few places that can do it, but again if your ship is not N or C registered you'll have to go through the paperwork with the CAD by yourself as there is no STC available. You could build one by yourself by ordering the bag tanks, hoses, pump, batteries and manual emergency pump etc and just fiddle around a bit. Some countries have regulations on ferry tanks that allow you to install temporarily without STC, but somebody else might know more about this...

thx runway.. tried looking on the website but couldn't find the right bit. HKAC does not rebuild.. they all go back to Torrence but we haven't done a 44 yet.

I assume that the all in cost with robo gets you shiney new paint and seats etc.. or are all those bits extras?

I believe interior, including seats and carpeting is included, and if you go with RHC the paint too. Check with RHC or with whoever took care of the R22 overhaul, it should be the same policy for R44. Not included are floats...

Some time ago somebody posted how to adjust the music volume in the R44 for the aux input, even with the music on full it is way too quiet, despite searching I can't find it, can anyone post a link or the details?

I seem to recall that there's a pot that can be adjusted somewhere?

Either i have totally missed it, or, there is some secret language here.

Maybe you could let us know which side of the tracks the trains in your part of the world run on so half wit chopper jocks like me,
that don't see many trains,
can work out whether we are in a position to help you.
