Jesus Gordy ease up a little...guns blazing and all ..wow.
One would think you are American !

I love this forum how PPL are ready to shoot first, try and blow PPL out of the water for a statement made & not be A LITTLE MORE PROFESSIONAL !!

EG;

"Helofan , Gordy here, I dont quite agree with your statement, I find Florida cheaper than other places I have found, please give a little insight into your statement....cheers Gordy"

Much more professional isnt it ??!!

Gordy
Yes Florida is expensive , possibly you are from europe/UK where the cost of living is crazier still.

Or even California has a high cost of living but , lets move on eh ?

Compared to other countries & OTHER STATES in the US, it is expensive.

Lets see, my Car insurance ( Geiko ) has gone from $400 a year for full comprehensive & valued at $15k agreed value..to

A car I purchased for $3000 , full comprehensive, no agreed value just replacement or repair ... nice, for a mere $650 for 6 months...BECAUSE OF THE STATE I am living in !!!

Accomodation isnt high too especially for the region though, if we compare it too say, NYC then yes Florida is very cheap but if we compare it to say Ohio, Florida is on the WTF scale end.

Shall we compare the cost of Tomatoes too ?
I am serious , fruit and veg here is nuts LOL ah hmm... anyhoo.
Food is a major expense & for a state that is a growers state, the cost is stupid.
Why oh why !

The list goes on...

Now there are other countries even that I could compare to for cost of living whilst flight training & can show that it can be cheaper than the US.

Not that I am going to go on and on about it , just saying that Florida is expensive....

Over to the Gallery..

Helofan, if your insurance is that exspensive, your either can't drive, and have crashed a lot, or have come from the arsehole of nowhere, where they will pay you to live. Likewise if you don't look around you will never find a good deal. I pay 430/month for a room in a shared 3 bed town house 3 mins from the beach, my car cost $3300, and $350/year to insure fully comp. I live 25 mins from school and spend $45 on gas each week.

With gordy on this one, florida is cheap, for europeans everything is probably half price or less.

How much flying time, what your insturction is like is down to the quality of instructor and you're personal drive, i have seen someone do their ppl in a month at HAI, if you want something and can work hard enough it is possible.

Good luck mate

Hey Mount , great driving record , had insurance my whole life but the insurance companies that I have had previous are not recognised in Florida/US.
And yes looked around , whatta ya think I am 12?
I have a brother inlaw that is an insurance agent for another company and he workked on it too..same result.. no history in the US , no breaks on Costs...

I lived prior to here in the Carribbean for 4 years...Not cheap but the trip here is that there are no Carribbean based insurance companies, they may operate from the Carribbean but are offspring from a parent company that are often US based ...weird , anyhoo they wont recogonise out of US based insurance companies so its like being an 18 year old that has never driven or been insured before.
I have seen folks do their PPL in a short time too then also seen others get screwed about due t ocrap scheduling & being really pushy can also have a negative effect....seen that game played out on souls too.

Anyhow , before this gets too much into a game of marbles the theme here is do some research.

Cheers

Helofan you drive a girls car anyway !

I agree like everything, research and go in with your eyes and ears open. Unseen things will and do happen, but go in prepared and your less likely to fall on your arse.

Ivor, i agree with you titusville is way to exspensive for what it really is (feeding zone for mosquitoes) Its worth looking farther a field, if you don't find anything cheaper you will find a lot more for the same money.

Good Luck

MJ

HELOFAN....
OK Maybe I was a little harsh, however, I stand by my statement about it being cheaper. Some mentioned Titusville, well, the regional "Consumer Price Index" (CPI) for Titusville is 169.7 compared to a US City average of 173.8. You mentioned Ohio, which yes is slightly lower at 168.4.
Data gleaned from Here...Cost of living calculators

Other data gleaned by doing simple searches revealed "In the first quarter of 2007, Missouri had the 7th lowest cost of living in the United States. In general, the most expensive areas to live are New England, Alaska, Hawaii, and the West Coast. The least expensive areas continue to be the Midwest and Southern States." Florida's cost of groceries is 100.6% of the national average---so really not that high, especially if you shop "wisely".

I have lived in California for 8 years and Hawaii for 7, and YES Florida is way cheaper. I have had a home in Titusville for 2 years now. So far this year, I have been in California, Kentucky, Tennessee, Nth Carolina, Florida and now Idaho, (only counting those where I stayed more than 2 weeks), and it is my observation that Titusville is STILL the cheapest. I have observed students living in Titusville not being as "savvy" with their training and living money as they could be. Things never change---it was the same way in CA back in the early 90's. Oh well......

Having said all that---Titusville is no longer my choice of place to live---anyone want to buy a house?????????

Bored on fire contract---gearing up for a busy post July 4th season....I promise to improve ......enjoy the rest of you 4th.

Question Training in PHX?

I am looking for a recommendation for a college in the PHX area preferably that do JAA approved PPL courses? Also, has anyone done it as a residential course? How long does it really take?

Where's PHX?

I did a full-time PPL in the UK. It took 7 weeks in total with only half a day lost through bad weather but several days lost through serviceability problems! That was also only 5 days a week.

Cheers

Iv had a very negative experience of ocean helicopters, like many more people from trinidad and Irland not to mention the uk. Money diminishes rapidly from your account, there is many extra charges which you do not know about before you go. They make mistakes and charge you for flights you do not do. They also have accounts on this forum and i suspect they place positive comments about themselves, which are in my opinion totally untrue. The only positive thing about my experience was the airport it is uncontrolled and there is a lot of space to practice.

Lightbulb

It's a side effect of the system PPRuNe has introduced to combat the problem of spammers registering to post their ads.

Newly registered members' posts have to be approved by a Mod or Admin before they appear on the forums. When they don't see their post appear, they sometimes assume something's gone wrong and try again.
When they are approved as a genuine user, sometimes all their attempts appear.

Quantum PHX

I had a good experience with Quantum Heli's in Chandler, AZ. Lost one day flying in 5 weeks due to high wind. They only have 3 R22 IFR machines but lots of VFR R22's. Also they have on site maintanence who are very very good, work through the night etc...

Hi All

Can anyone tell me whether Helicopter Services Inc. http://www.heliserv.com/main/index.htm have a good reputation?

They are based just outside Houston and I have friends living there. They are also very good value from 0 - CPL(H) CFII..

Regards

Hey scrumpy, i've not been there (yet) bud did have a chat with them earlier this year about hour building over there.
The guy who owns it is a Scott who's been over there for 30 odd years. Robin Simpson.
Seemed pleasant enough.
If you contact them by email they will probably ring you. (like they did me)

Hey Gus

I email'd them about a week ago and still waiting.. Since they don't appear to be a 141 company (is that right?) then I doubt they will be able to help with visas etc.. They are certainly cheap for Hrs building and close to IAH so good busy ATC practice...

If you are heading out there soon then let me know what they are like.. I asked q's about size of operation as well which is quite important to me as I would like to give myself the best odds at scoring a job once qualified..

I think TBH it would be best for me to go the Bristow Academy route and qual JAR/FAR in the hope that that will also help me in the future..

Where are you at with your training?

Cheers Gus

Hi everybody,

My name is Paolo, I'm 21, i'm italian and I have a jaa PPLH licence with 50 hours logged in the r22.
I have decided to go to the US to get the CPL/IR and CFI.
I would like to do the training under the J-1 visa program. I know the the only schools that can provide that visa are Bristow Academy and Hillsboro
Aviation. I have already contacted both, and I also read the previous pages of this thread to get info but I want to ask if anybody have fresh news about this two school and if, in your opinion, one is better than the other or if the two schools are at the same level.

Thank you very much for any advice.

Weather

Let the weather help you decide, Oregon is beautiful place but it has Uk weather. Bristow is the best J-1 option
