Hello boys and girls!!
Still here - just got back from Boston (capacity load, too). As WWW says, I've been a little busy recently. Although it would seem that I've survived the cull at Virgin, I've been usng a little of my Pprune Wannabes expertise (!) and contacts to help in the job search for those not so lucky here at Virgin (over 250 at last count). You might be surprised to learn that there are still jobs out there, although they're mainly contract work for experienced people. At least they might keep a fair number of the experienced guys away from the traditional Wannabes territory, and leave some openings for you chaps. That's not a statement of unbridled optimism, but it's a little more hopeful than some of the prognoses we've been giving over the last few weeks.
As a bit of an update on feelings around my contacts in the industry: there are the beginnings of attempts to look beyond the next few days and into the 'medium term' - i.e. to Christmas. Loads over the Atlantic have bottomed out and are beginning to recover for UK carriers - we're showing average loads of 65-70% at the moment, with some routes running at capacity. Yields are not too bad - we haven't dropped our prices although the US carriers have, as a direct result of the financial buffer they've had from the US Government. That's causing some very loud cries of 'foul' at the moment, but it's going to take more than cheap flights to get US pax back on to AA and United just yet.
Surprisingly, the European domestic market has taken a considerable turn for the worse over the last two weeks. This, I'm sure, is more due to upheaval in the general economy rather than any reaction to 9/11 and, as such, may be a little longer-lasting. BMI already reacted by increasing their (pilot) redundancies, and Thomas Cook are now making similar noises about JMC. EZ and Ryan are still bullish, however, as are Virgin Express (one of very, very few mainland European lines to make a profit in Q3). The overall feeling is that, with a few exceptions, the cuts have been made and we now have to see how the market pans out. No-one's forcasting a rapid recovery, but we are seeing a degree of stability returning, which makes planning a bit easier. We are all looking to get Christmas out of the way and waiting to see whether the general public decides to spend its way out of the overall gloom in the New Year. Fingers crossed for all of us!

I must agree with you whirlybird on this. I may not always agree with www (more often than not I do as it happens) and I am sure he does not always agree with me.

But the pathetic tit for tat nonsense going on in this forum of late is really quite sad. Remember this is a 'professional' pilots forum - sometimes I am deeply embarassed to think I am going into a career where some people are so utterly unprofessional.

But then I think, no don't worry, as these losers are never going to get into mainstream aviation. Certainly I have never met line pilots with the attitude of some of you so called wannabes, so I am sure you will get weeded out. I hope so for the safety of the rest of us.

Team working involves diplomacy, and the ability to accomodate somebodies viewpoints that you may not necessarily share. By all means there is no harm in reasoned debate, but such stupid namecalling is really sad, and for me devalues this forum.

And before anybody flames me out as just another wannabee what the hell does he know (reasonably valid) I happen to work in a team of people where the whole measure of success or failure has far more to do with how we coalesce as a group, rather than what we know.

So yes I am right behind www; keep it up mate. No I will not lick your @rse. If I disagree with you strongly I will offer a reasoned debate with my viewpoint, yet remain flexible enough to be talked out of it should you or anybody else offer further relevant information.

So come on, let's stop this stubborn immature attitude, and get the wannabes forum back to discussing relevant flight training issues that may actually benefit all of us, rather than the daft ego trips from people who have done and are doing nothing to help us.

Edited to appease you G-SXTY! - please let's not allow this thread to veer of course and slip into pedant's corner though.

It may have all been said, but let's get 100 posts just to prove that the whining "don't like it mum so I'll shoot the messenger" idiots are a small minority. So come on; 25 down, 75 to go.

Hi again.

IFR, not sure if you are referring to my last paragraph, but I am sure you realise that I and many others know and appreciate how much effort you, www, scroggs et al. give us wannabees.

That comment was aimed at the 'losers' that come on here and chuck expletives at you folk who spend your free time trying to help us. I just felt that the good guys needed reasurring that the vast majority of us appreciate the work you put in, and we would hate you to lose you, because of some of the rather personal remarks aimed at some of you.

If it wasn't about my post, then the above still clarifies my reasoning for the original posting. I agree again Whirly - let's keep those messages of support coming in.

Blimey! The electronic censor let 'arse' slip through the net. And on a WWW tribute thread!

I'll store that one away for future reference . . .

I stand with the majority of others in applauding WWW for his time and effort.
Hard job, and done very well.

It funny how much critism some can give when hiding behind a made up user name eh?

Double Standard? Censorship? Hmmmmmmmmmm

When someone offers feedback backed up by a consensus view (7-8 supporting emails from other Ppruners) that sheds an unfavorable light on our overly-insensitive and sometimes self-righteous WWW, the entire post mysteriously disappears and is shut down. I didn't even start that post - someone else started a post questioning WWW's role as moderator given his highly-subjective viewpoints and "holier-than-thou" attitude - and it was quickly shut down by .... Hamrah. Where is Hamrah now? Has he read this kiss-fest? Is this 3-page positive feedback not a waste of time as well? Shouldn't both positive and negative feedback be welcome as a way to improve the forum in general? Or is the truth just too painful to accept?

Hey Sensible and Whirlybird, your sychophantic brown-nosing should be supported by fact. Did you read WWW's posting in Senecasoarer's original "BA Cadet" post? He ripped Senecasoarer a new one in an APPALLING and insensitive fashion and basically demonstrated his own bitterness. I wish I had copied his remarks so that I could paste them here for you to see (note that WWW/Hamrah shut down the thread quickly given zero defense for his actions). Did you even read the original post or are you just jockying for a GO interview?

Am I being too sensitive? No - at least 7-8 other Ppruners agreed with me that WWW had crossed the line as a moderator. Now he gladly accepts your happy, supporting comments in finitum - this post will probably go for another 15 pages... It makes me sick. I hope you all get jobs with GO and live happily ever after. I'll be flying Easy from now on.

Anyone who disagrees with my viewpoint should ask WWW or Hamrah to reinstate that previous post and read the comments/tone yourself - you WILL understand.

GOD BLESS

Lavdumper,
this forum exists to allow people to share information and opinions on subjects on things relevant to wannabes trying to enter professional aviation. We don't claim that all our Moderators' opinions are right, or that they are immune to human nature. If we take exception to posts that gratuitously insult us, or use this forum as a platform for spouting dissention and dissatisfaction with our methods, we reserve the right to remove those posts. You don't pay for this site, nor is it your professional opinion that is being publicly called into question. In other words, there is no free speech here, it's our train set, and you play by our rules or play elsewhere.
Simple really - play nice or p1ss off!

Scroggs,

You surprise me. I thought, perhaps, you would appreciate the true nature of a forum - uninhibited discourse.

That is not the case here if moderators are provided with an ability to selectively censor threads that do NOT necessarily praise their purported wisdom. I understand that this is a commercial enterprise as well - you have sponsors, etc. I am not questioning that - certainly a propper level of decorum is an absoulte requirement.

However, slamming scared, anxious Wannabes is not the propper role of a moderator - even you must agree with me on that, right? Scroggs, did you read the post and WWW's comments? Did you notice the 7-8 other Ppruner remarks condemning WWW's harshness? Did you read his response to me in which he immaturely referred to me as a "damn yank" and a "prat"? Is that propper for an objective moderator? If it is ok with you, then I think Capt. Pprune should also weigh in on this issue because some form of corrective action should be taken.

I will play by the rules (I love to participate on PPrune), but I would appreciate more objectivity and less overt bitterness towards hapless Wannabes seeking guidance. I wasn't the only PPruner upset - if you read the original thread you will find many others.

It's all about EQUITY - and once a forum loses equity, credibility starts to wane...

Read the original thread if at all possible - you WILL understand.

Cheers

You have to admit, Lavdumper does have a point with, what seems to be the latest phrase, "A waste of bandwidth". Especially as WWW has already stated "enough already" in a posting on this thread.

It is hypocritical.

Oh, and count me out on the GO interview, i've only just managed to escape - making a point of real airlines only from now on!

Lavdumper,

"Hey Sensible and Whirlybird, your sychophantic brown-nosing should be supported by fact...are you just jockying for a GO interview?

The facts are that I've been reading PPuNe for a long time, and knew WWW personally before that, at Welshpool. As a moderator, he puts in a lot of time and effort. As a contributor to PPRuNe he has opinions, like the rest of us. There is no rule, so far as I know, that moderators aren't supposed to have opinions. If you don't like them, it's your problem, not his.

I think the post you mention disappeared because it became personal, rude, and thoroughly nasty. That hasn't happened here. Simple really.

My name is Whirlybird and you think I want to join GO!!! Words fail me.

Lav,
we're obviously going to have to agree to disagree about the validity of WWW's (or my, or IFR's, or any other moderator's) opinions. Which is fair enough. However, I think the suggestion that any of us would use Pprune to protect or enhance our employment situation is a bit beyond the pale, and I'd appreciate it if you'd consider what the implications of such a statement are. Remember that none of us receives any payment for our work on Pprune, and many of us have to keep our Pprune activities low-profile - there are some employers who still regard Pprune as a somewhat subversive influence!
Good, constructive debate is always welcome (as long as it's relevant), but irrelevant and abusive diatribes will usually be filed in the bin, where they belong - whoever drags them down!

Lavdumper, I had to check that this was Wannabes rather than Jetblast. Thanks for the amusement though! If you had taken time to read my profile, you would have gathered that I'm no candidate for GO or any other airline (except as pax) and so far as brown-nosing as you call it, I leave that to others like yourself who know the meaning of the word! I am in the fortunate position of not having to brown-nose to anyone! It's a real shame that your memory isn't up to much or you would have remembered my contribution to the content on that thread which you quote from and saved yourself from making such a foolish post!

It seems to me that there is a 50/50 split here. Obviously 'Wee Weasley' is not everyone's 'cup of tea' on this forum anymore. It seems to me that the general attitude to anyone who questions the moderator(s) on this forum is to either:

a.close the thread
b.retort with bad language

Surely this is not the 'Professional Image' that you moderators wish to give out. There must be many wannabes coming onto the forum for the very first time daily. Can you imagine the impression they are left with from the 'moderators' when you retort with things like,'If you don't like it then P*ss off' or words to that effect.

Shame on you! Call yourself 'Professional Pilots'

I don't think so!!!

Crikey.

All this from telling poor old SenneccaSoarer that he would have to be JOKING if he thought he could find any way of twin piston flying at the moment without hiring his own aircraft.

A young chap I assisted in a small way in gaining his BA sponsorship in the first place...

Hamrah closed the original thread not I. It was a good call as PPRuNe is tight on bandwidth at the moment. I should really close this one but I won't.

If you want an intelligent discussion on the role of moderator then I am up for that. Unlike most Mods I have always voiced personal opinion without using a secondary username. Which has its pros and cons. Often people get het up about it becuase they seem to think that a Moderator should be moderate. Or they think that my role should be akin to that of Chairman of a debate or the Speaker of the House. Which is a valid view.

There is also a secondary issue which is that as custodian of Wannabes one tries to generate debate. Occasionally I use different usernames to do this but not often.

The way I chose to handle the Wannabe crisis that way Sept 11th is a good point in case. It also seems to have generated this sentiment of holier than thou that a few people are articulating. I decided that if I were still a Wannabe then I would want this forum to summarise every piece of a bad news effecting me. So I posted every Wannabe 'threat' that appeared. I also voiced the opinion that I thought the Wannabe market would be very very poor for the next 2 years and advised people not the commit to expensive training.

This seemed to get up some peoples noses. Usually they were either pilots already, deep into and committed to training or very young.

But for John Wannabe I stand by my advice and I stand by my position. They know very little about the industry and are all too gullible when talking to FTO marketing departments who are still spinning the line that BA have hundreds of retirements and a massive upturn is just around the corner...

So they need a counterpoint. That counterpoint needs to be from a respectable source. I chose to be that counterpoint.

Which has got me flamed but - hey - who cares.

PPRuNe was really really useful to me as a Wannabe. I strive to continue to keep it useful for those behind me on the road.

Providing Wannabe TLC is an important but secondary role of this forum. In my view.

Similarly most of my emails to Wannabes are blunt, curt and sometimes rude. Largely this is becuase my time is short. I include any useful info that I can. But I have short thrift for idiotic questions easily answered by a bit of searching. And i get a LOT of those !

I am open to criticism and comment. I don't think I am infallible. If I didn't have a full time job, a girlfriend and an entire life outside of PPRuNe plus got paid for all this I would be able to be a lot better Moderator. But I do so you sometimes get a knackered distracted annoyed moderator rather than Jesus Christ with a laptop. Sorry

LAVDUMPER. I am seriously annoyed with you. You said that it took ages for me to find a half decent job. You intoned that I flew a piece of crap aircraft for a company of unsound footing. I took great exception to this and I flamed you soundly. Which you deserved.

You are not a Wannabe. You are not a professional Pilot. You chose to give poor quality advice to SeneccaSoarer (get a FI rating) based on your very very limited understanding of the UK aviation market. Which was iressponsible at worst and valueless at best.

Your reappearance here suggests to me that for some reason you really really hate me as WWW and wish to spend your time attacking me. Fair enough. Its your life.

Just don't pretend that you have Wannabes best interest at heart.

Cheers,
