Financial help for trainee Pilot's
This has probably been discussed a million and one times, however I am new to pprune so please bare with me. I am studying for my A.T.P.L. (distance learning) at the minute and I am basically struggling to find money for licence issues and things like that. I have found that I am unable to study and be employed at the same time (mainly due to employers wanting more and more hours!)plus the fact is I want to do well in these exams so I try to study as much as possible. Is there any money avaliable in the form of grants etc out there that I could apply for? I am talking about minimal ammounts (a few hundred would be nice) just to help me out for the moment. If I was training to be a doctor or surgeon then I am pretty sure funding would be pretty easy to come by (so to speak) however as soon as the words Airline and Pilot are mentioned, people say "Sorry no can do!" I know that many people are in my situation and it annoys me that so many turn their backs on trainee pilots's as the natural assumption is, "they must have a rich mum or dad!"
Are there any grants out there that people know of?

The C.D.L soon went after I started training! That got me as far as I am now, i know people don't like giving money away however grants/scholarships are given to students studying other fields so why not aviation?
It seems for now (maybe the forseable future) that a number of tomorrows Pilots just have to pay their own way and if they can't afford it well............... join the que at the job centre.
Why should a job like this only be avaliable to the people who can afford it from the start?

I'm not sure at all, but would the Student Loans Company help at all ? They are the guys who supply interest-free loans to all university students / all higher education students, and I would consider learning to fly the same sort of thing, just more exciting!
As I say though, I'm really not sure, its just an idea.

Cheers crazy pilot, I think I read somewhere that generally student loans are out of the question.However it may well be worth a shot! Also I have a standard letter written which I intend to send to every airline in the world if I have to!

Well. Ive recently been enquiring about the Student/Professional Studies loans for Commercial Pilots Licenses. However I am obviously a little skeptical about the terms on this loan. I spoke to a guy with HSBC bank and he was unsure about the terms. What I need to know is, does the loans require security? do I need to be a home owner? etc etc.
Any feedback on this would be great.

I asked at my local HSBC and they told me they didn't do loans for Pilot's, I nearly laughed because I had just recieved a leaflet from the bank advertising the loan! It is non-secured (I am 99% sure), that is the beauty of it!
Anything up to £50,000 can be loaned out!

I've had problems getting help from them
3 times gone in to apply,
3 times they give me a different reason to why they won't lend any,
ranging from Not being a customer to not having a degree, they keep moving the goal posts.
A instructor gave me really good advice and told me to do one step at a time which has proved to be right.
I was on a full time atpl course before my funds ran out which made me go distance learning and the ave age was about 30.
I was worried i was running out of time to do it (i'm 23 with 2 kids) but going on that cousre made me realise there is no rush especially at the moment.
So i'm working, saving, studying and hopefully i won't need a massive loan.
Anyway i'm still on the lookout so if anyone has any ideas let us all know.

If the bank are giving u the runaround then they either dont like u or they havent got a clue!!!!!
I went into the bank with no degree and they have said I can have £22000.
U don't need a degree to get the loan I asked them and they looked it up whilst I was there!
Should go in the bank like u were going for that job with B.A.!!!!

How ive managed to tackle it (so far) and would recommend anone who has the oppurtunity do the same; is that I completed all my theory (PPL/CPL/IFR), took out a small(ish) laoan loan of abou $6500 to get me going on the flying side of things then started working full time shift work - So I fly once a day either in the morning or afternoon.
Check it out anyway - shift work isint always 24hrs and you can sometimes pick up a decent wage or allowance for working irregular hours. As an idea I work 5am till noon or 11am till dinner - both pretty easy on the body and rewarding on the pocket.

Loans for younger people...
Im 18 in October, and when i finish my A levels next june/may, i wish to head towards my CPL endorsed as a (f)ATPL soon there-after. I have been intouch with someone who has been very helpful, and we have discussed briefly about how to build hours amongst other things. I feel i should ask this question here regarding Wannabe lisensing etc, so others may have the same question answered...(im not selfish see )...
I, upon speaking with my parents, have come to the unconfirmed conclusion that i must either have a full time job, or be in full time ed. (uni) to get a loan, and also upon reading this line of threads, a home owner. Can i get a loan to pay for an intergrated ATPL course, and will it be less money should i already hold a PPL...as i learnt the intergrated course takes you from nothing to CPL/ATPL(f)...This is correct i believe...
Any feedback from anybody with information would be greatly appreciated as it is all part of my planning towards my future which, however long it takes, i will achieve.

You do not have to be a home owner to get a loan Your best bet would be a career development loan of up to £8000 which would cover everything from your P.P.L. to your A.T.P.L. course (based on distance learning prices) Barclays gave me mine and it is interest free until Jan 2004. You can then possibly look towards the big H.S.B.C. loan (again unsecured) to cover the rest of your training, however the best way to cut down loan costs is to get a job and earn some money to pay for part of your training. Maybe do what I did which was to take a year out and find work somewhere?

3.Multi £1500

ok, so
What is all this fuss about taking out thousands and thousands when your total is around £6,500. Abit different from 40 thousand would you agree? That other 34 grand is for hour building right?

db (ha, my initials)...i appreciate your response. I would like to question just once about the CPL. I must obtain a CPL, and night rating, pass the exams AND have the minimum hours on these before getting an ATPL or i can get these and the ATPL theory in an intergrated course for alot of money? How do i pay for the int. course: after? as i go? upfront before i start? (i hope not!).

If you go into your local careers library and look up how to get into the commercial aviation game you'll see from the outset that you're looking at shelling out a few quidz to train to become a pilot, alot more than quoted here I'm afraid to say. Still, if you're a student geezer you may be eligible to apply to the now near extinct airline sponsorships.
You can get a loan from HSBC for the whole cost of the integrated course but it is a path plagued with difficulties and dead ends - bit like the job market! You will need security on the loan - Moms and Pops house is usually the lill ditty they look for so butter those mothers up matey boy!
Can be done, done it myself and if you wanna know the ins and outs then email me as I cannot really see the sense in blurting out my financial details to the globe on here. I know it would be useful to some of ya's but that's the deal OK?
