There is no such thing as an 'aviation related high school' in UK. I'm not aware of any in the USA, though there are a number of 'aviation universities' (such as Embry-Riddle) over there.

I have no idea what facilities are available to you in Italy, but if you are moving to the UK you should consider joining the Air Training Corps to help you learn about aviation.

Becoming a commercial pilot

I don't know if this is where to post this, but I am currently taking flying lessons and want to take it further if I can get my PPL.

I just want to know if this is the best way of doing things, by getting a PPL and training with an airline such as EZY or BA?

Cheers.

P.S. Any recommendations on best airline to fly with from North West?

gms,

The only way you can train with an airline is by getting airline sponsorship.
You would need to be a very bright well educated shiny individual to even get a sniff --> certainly ruled me out !

Check airline websites or look in industry rags (like Flight International) for sponsorship details (they don't come along very often).

I applied once upon a long time ago to BA ... I was applicant number 64,000 and something for 100 places !!

Sponsorship aside, you can self sponsor your license (which is how the vast majority of pilots do it these days). This is a very expensive process without any gaurantee of employment at the end.
On top of that, once you get your frozen ATPL, most airlines will expect you to pay another £15-20k for your type rating (but at least you'll have a job at that point).

All in all, this is the most realistic scenario if you really want to fly airliners for a living.

Speak to Cabair at Cranfiled and OAT at Oxford for details on commercial courses ...

Good luck.

Cheers for the information.

Hope Royal Grammar School Education will help!

Have to continue with my PPL and see what I can do after that.

Of all the forums PPRuNe offers, I'm baffled that you chose Rumours & News in which to post your questions.

Anyway, you might like to look at these links:

Any Tips?

Hey everyone, I just started flight training this week and I know already I want to be a professional pilot. I am attending the local university where I hope to get a degree in aviation science. If anyone has any tips or advice that would help me along my way I would really appreciate it.

hi bzimmer,

its nice to see someone excited about flying...

been instructing and examining many years and i still like to strap an aeroplane on any chance i get.

not a lot one could say to you at your stage...there is so much that one could say to you as you progress but for the moment...just enjoy it and see where it takes you.

good luck...

Well first get your degree, while you're doing it take lessons, get a ppl and such.

Once you're done with your degree theres two options to becoming a Professional Pilot.

1: Hope and prey airlines suddenly start sponsoring again (unlikely)

2: pay for your own CPL/IR and fATPL. This is what most wannabe pilots end up doing. Theres plenty of information on these boards on good flight schools, but concentrate on your degree first, i know how it feels to want to fly so much you wish you were just doing it and to hell with everything else. But getting a good degree will look good in the future on your CV.

But above all else, Just take your time, you've got 3-4 years (assuming you are just about to start your degree) read up, find out about everything you want to know. Plenty of time gives you the ability to weigh up the pros and cons of different schools, methods of learning and such.

Goodluck and have fun

Piloting Jobs in England???

Hi, I'm a 17 year old student studying for 'A' Levels in Kent, UK. I intended to start training for CPL after my 'A' Levels are completed (Summer 2008) but to be completely honest I am bored studying for qualifications that will have absolutely no relevance to becoming a pilot.

The only thing stopping me leaving sixth form however, is the uncertainty of whether any employer would offer any flying job to a 17 year old, even as a flight instructor. I'm not willing to leave school, borrow £thousands from bank/parents with the acute likelihood of nobody putting enough trust in me to offer me a job flying their aircraft.

Also, what flying jobs are available in the UK other than with commercial airlines (obviously not an option with my age and experience)? And would a night and/or instrument rating be essential for most jobs?

Thanks for reading ,

I'm assuming you're a future fixed wing pilot.

Firstly I'd suggest you try searching through the forum. You're not the first and won't be the last to ask that question (So expect one or two sarcastic replies advising the search )

IMHO stick with the A-levels and work to achieve the best grades possible. It would be unwise to rely on aviation as your only option.

I'm assuming you've already decided on the great modular/integrated route debate so I'll move straight to your main point.

This industry is unable to provide you ANY guarantees. As a lows hours newly qualified pilot, regardless of age, you are going to have to be very lucky to walk straight into a flying job Sorry, but for many that's just the way it is. Your young age isn't possibly as huge a problem as you perceive because you can take the time to progress that many in the 30's can't.

I used to work with a 19 yr old FI (who coincidently was nicknamed peanut - just incase he's reading). Fairly sure that similarly to the rotary world your CPL will include the night rating - but willing to be flamed by those with more 'plank' knowledge.

Budget on getting an IR. I found mine far more use than the FI rating. The jobs are out there but are by no means guaranteed and may require you relocating to where the work is. I know of young guys with promising futures ahead of them but you have to appreciate that you could be the ideal candidate, gods gift to flying and you may still have to wait a long time It is all about luck and who you know.

I hope you're lucky, but have a back up plan. ONLY a fool believes for certain that he'll go straight from training to work. The flying will always be there so don't automatically disregard further education

Of course your other option is the military
Best place to start in ALL cases is seeing if you can get a Class 1 medical.

Gotta Hope,

You wont get a flying job(instructing etc) at 17. To apply for your CPL you need to be 18. Stick in at school and finish your 6th form and get your A levels. Get an education behind you.

and p.s. you need to have your night rating before applying for your IR.

If something is worth doing it's worth doing well. Getting all the qualifications, CPL/IR NR etc. will allow you to chose what you do rather than let your qualifications dictate your job.

Just having qualifications doesn't guarantee jobs in any industry, not just the aviation industry.

If you have another area of flying you're interested in, other than Airlines, it would be helpful to know then we can help. If you're just going to choose a job that requires the least effort to obtain the licenses thats a really bad way to go about it.

Save, Save, Save

While taking your time, save as much money as you can by doing anything lucrative that does not interfer with your studies (and is legal!).

Having the cash available when you need it is a major advantage. And if you change your career aspirations, you've still got the money!

Best Wishes

wanting to become a pilot, need some help :)

Hi, I couldnt find any threads that really answered my question - I looked through a few pages and Ii couldnt find a search button.
I am a student taking A-levels with an ambition to become a pilot. I dont really know much about being a pilot and only got directed here by a friend. I am taking maths and physics at A-level (predicted A's), and I am currently not a member of any air-training corps or anything like that. I have looked around on the internet a lot, but most of the stuff is gobbledegook to me. I have heard I first need to get a PPL and then some other stuff. I am wanting to become a pilot for a commercial airline company. I would really appreciate some pointers as to what to do next. .

I look forward to your responses,

There is a thread at the top of this page which will help - it's a sort of FAQ and will direct you to other links.

Secondly, there IS an awful lot of information to be absorbed and all sorts of possibilities open to you.

The search function should be the third menu from the right across the top of the page but you need to be specific in your keywords and make sure you change the applicable dates and fora which to be searched.

GAPAN should also help with some of your queries but, in all honesty, what you need to know is so general it would be difficult for any one person to write it all.

However, you do not need a PPL to gain a commercial licence; you could go the integrated route and start from scratch that way.

Cheers

thanks but...

thanks for replying! i have viewed the links you sent me, but it is another language to me. i would like to know, simply put what i need to do to become a pilot as a career choice. after i finish my A-levels what would my next course of action be? a degree is advised but not essential? and what course? how would i start with my PPL? is there a way to get sponsored to pay for the costs? if so who would sponsor me? after getting a PPL wat else would i need to get? which companies/airlines run training courses? which airlines would hire novice pilots/officers? sorry i just have a lot of questions, and i really appreciate you taking time to read and respond

Did you open the 'How to become a pilot' PDF on the BALPA site?

If you cannot understand that son, I'd recommend another career. Sorry to sound so blunt..... but really!

You are just being lazy - you need to wipe your own backside in this game.
