My guess is Boulia.

Didn't think anything famous came out of Queensland, so I'll have to give the second part a bit of thought.

Hudson Fysh wrote about the place?:E

That's the Australian Hotel in Boulia QLD. Great steaks there!

Just a couple of buildings up is the local tourist information centre/min min experience.

Visited the place plenty of times, :ok:.

Pinky the pilot 18th Apr 2008 05:03

CoodaShooda & Morno; Correct!:ok:

morno 18th Apr 2008 07:36

My guess it's famous for hosting a considerable number of pilots while on the Worlds Longest Mail Run (when Boulia was part of the run)? :)

Wanderin_dave 18th Apr 2008 07:40

Yeah, taking photos at more than 60 degrees is a bit scary that's why i keep it to 5-10 degrees :ok:

I didn't think you could have a hotel that is also a motel???? I guess anything is possible in a country thats home to a mammal with a ducks bill. :confused:

Place of conception?

AAAH.........
ITS BOULIA,

Where Mr and Mrs "Pinky" SENIOR once stayed and, Lo and Behold - today we have 'Pinky The Pilot'...

(Aviation Content)..........

NO?? AH, well..........:ok::}:}

P.S. Is that a hangar behind the pub Pink??

Mark1234 18th Apr 2008 10:09

Ah, the hotel/motel. Ooops.. me out of sequence!

Konev: I know.. I fly it too (that same one). However the Alpha 160 IS a Robin - I'm not sure if it's built under license, or if Alpha bought the rights - either way, same aeroplane (to all intents and purposes). The POH even says "Approved Flight Manual... for the Alpha 160A (Type certificate model R2160)" on the front.

Pinky the pilot 18th Apr 2008 10:10

Morno; Correct again, but there is still more to the story!:}

Griffo; Er...no!:( Actually, years ago when I was still single and some sweet young thing would ask me what sign I was concieved under I used to reply...
''Gunthers Bar and Grill'':eek:

No-one ever seemed to have a reply to that!:hmm:

No hangar behind the pub. Couple of you beaut Motel units now apparently.

Apologies in advance because it's not a picture, but this seems a good topic to post the link in. For those not familiar with the goflying.org site, you can upload saved flights from a GPS and view/share your track, altitude and G/S.

Also, you can zoom in and review track at departure and destination, view it in Google Earth, and there is a "tour"' (replay) function from 1X to 64X.

The log in the link is Jandakot to Parafield of 1228 track miles, G/S of 194 Kts and elapsed time of 6:19 in a single engine Mooney the day after the Red Bull Air Race. Fuel used was 334 litres.

Aaah Pinky, that brings back some memories.
The structure in the background is not a hangar, it's actually the hall where they hold the annual Boulia Dance aka Rythmic Ceremonial Annual Mate Hunt. The airport is a little further down the street.

As for great steaks at the Boulia Pub all I can say is during the two years I was visiting there I saw some really bad food at the pub and some good food. I think they went through three different so called cooks during that time. I ended up going to the place down the street rather than eat at the pub for a while. It's name escapes me now, was it the sunrise cafe or sunshine cafe or something?

The motel at that time was 4 rooms out the back, looking at Google Earth now it appears to have been expanded somewhat. Wonder if the mice are still breeding in the pile of spare blankets on the floor :)

I'll always regret never having taken a camera with me on that run.

tinpis 18th Apr 2008 23:22

Well I remember thinking 30 odd years ago that apart from frill neck lizards there seemed to be a lot of this fellas relatives walking around Boulia :hmm:
