I flew the toy down this year; as for the bus, keep an ear out in the next little bit. :8

I'm not sure what creates this phenomena, but it sure makes pretty photos!

Corky: Kaipo not, Pyke not!

If you go into Harrisons Cove (ride the Elevator off NZMF) just carry straight on up the valley (instead of making the turn into the fjiord for the Footstool) you'll go straight over the Kaipo Wall and into the Kaipo Valley itself.

The strip you indicate in behind Awarua Point there (N side of Big Bay) looks to me to be more up towards Gorge River... not too familiar with that area though -we usually came down the E side of the Red Hills to the Olivine Ice Plateau into the Pyke (between Lakes Alabaster and Wilmot) before running the Kaipo Saddle (roughly 44 26'03.34 S 168 00'59.25 E) on the way to Yates Point/St Annes Point for the NZMF arrival.

Plenty of spots in the Pyke to put down if you really need to, a couple of old strips in that area too, but not easy to see on GE!

Hope that helps!

Jetstar1,

Who says nothing grows in a salt lake? I've been told that the red colour is due to an algae that thrives in that salty environment... now all we gotta do is find a market for salty red algae!:}:ok:

Cheers,

The same algae that makes a white flamingo go pink. :8

Would that be Esperence in WA?

This one might be a tricky one. Taken in January 2005.

Any guesses?

spag 6th Dec 2007 19:36

Bevan 666 - is it Dili?

I thought number 2 from my photos would have been gotten quickly. Some clues - The runway threshold is at the far left of the photo in the centre ... It is not in Australia (any more) ... there is already a photo of the airfield on this thread from on the ground.

tipsy2 6th Dec 2007 20:51

spag, could it be Lae TPNG.

tipsy

kingtoad 6th Dec 2007 21:14

... I would have said Goroka rather than Lae.

spag 6th Dec 2007 23:37

Kingtoad - Goroka it is, well done

Another view of Goroka:

Re Jetstar1's photo.

Shot of the Mulligan River, west of Glengyle, showing the red algae build-up as evaporation takes place. Similar to the lake photos above.
