I love a sunburned country
A land of sweeping plains
Of rugged mountain ranges
Of drought and flooding rain
I love her far horizons
I love her jeweled sea
Her beauty and her terror
‘Tis the wide brown land for me

Ya 5 is milford, 6 is the fox glacier (easy to mix up), 8 is a picture of the top of the fox glacier and 7 is a picture of Mt Tasman (and Cook) but 7 & 8 are overhead a busy landing area for the choppers and ski planes. Anyone have any idea the name ??

Looking out the window

You have to look out the window over there. Just following the GPS often does not work.
I remember, a Long time ago, flying a tripacer through the Haast pass underneath solid cloud. Fortunately we had talked to the local aviators before we did it, and they were greatly amused when they saw the straight line we had drawn on our WAC chart. (that's what they teach you at flying schools.)
To see some real bush flying I can recommend the video's "The venison hunters" and "the last great adventure" by videosouth.

Its been a while and I'm racking my brain...think it is 'XXX icefall',... and the only one I can think of is Hochstetter(?). Is that it?

If not, where is the Hochstetter Icefall...or have I completely lost the plot?

Dixons Cider 4th Dec 2007 11:14

nah think I'm on the wrong side of the divide....sun has fried me brain....going to have a looksee on google earth...

Corkey McFuz 4th Dec 2007 19:48

yea you are on the wrong side of the divide. The Hochstetter runs from the Grand Plateau down onto the Tasman glacier- I think :uhoh:. The place in question is a big flat area by the top of the fox ice fall called the "fox xxxx" ;)

tinpis 5th Dec 2007 01:38

Just some wild speculation here, but do you think there is any chance that the designer of the Cirrus CAPS coming up with his idea not long after being asked to land at that strip???:eek:

"No, I think I'll just go up a few thousand feet and pop the chute" as opposed to attempting to land and dumping a sh!t.

slackie 5th Dec 2007 04:57

Tin....definitely before my time!!:}
