I just dont get why anyone would pay for and put two VFR GPS's into the dash... I dont see why it would have ever made any sense.

:confused:

Bevan..

VFR GPS's are often far more feature rich than the certified bit brothers. Much rather a 296/396/495 than a crappy old IFR certified TSO'ed Apollo or similar. The new features and reliability testing for the TSO'ed models happen on the non TSO'ed VFR models by people like us.

Even Elvis with all the gear on board uses a 296 for primary fire fighting ops!

Labour Weekend Weather...

Not much fun for the pilot (thankfully not me) trying to fly the NDB hold at NZTG... in a PA28-181 at full power and still losing 300'/minute at one end of the hold, and at idle power and gaining around 500'/minute at the other!! Made maintaining 6000' "a bit difficult". Ended up with a 1000' block altitude :ouch:

The gliders around NZTG at 12,000 seemed to enjoy it tho :\

Funny, the first thing I thought, before reading the text was "oooh, glider p0rn" :)

South island? Must get back over...

As they say "One man's kink is another man's pain" :E

And no, not the South Island... NZTG = Tauranga... the 1st photo was looking south of Hamilton, the 2nd one was in the vicinity of Tauranga... there were another 3 or 4 like that around....

The Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges are only about 2500'... I hate to think what it would have been like coming off the Southern Alps! :eek:

Mark1234 30th Oct 2008 06:16

True enough.. I go both ways :E

Had my first experience of wave out of Omarama - the first hour or so trying to climb in rotor; I think I spent the first half wondering how the wings didn't fall off, and the 2nd wishing they would :eek: Eerily smooth once there, and as for the view..

It doesn't look it, but there's 15,000ft on the altimeter at that point.. :ok:
.. should be easy to figure *where*

Sarcs 30th Oct 2008 08:28

Mark1234 that is an awesome photo! Not sure where, Mount Cook maybe!!?? Looks like a glacier at the bottom of the pic.....'Tasman' or......... 'Franz Joseph' (that's if it is Mount Cook).

Again top photo!!

*BUMP* - I found this thread buried on page 6?!?!?

Some relatively easy ones:

I'm guessing that cross runway is going to be one of those 'no go-around' types! :suspect:

Slipper Island off Tairua on the Coromandel Penninsula??

There used to be fantastic scallops in Home Bay, and the wreck of the Manaia a lttle further south...not much visible now except the shaft.

HardCorePawn 12th Nov 2008 00:26

Personally I would have said off the coast by Pauanui... I had to double check where Tairua was! :oh:

but yep, Slipper Island it is. No guesses on the first?

slackie 12th Nov 2008 00:39

Sounds like a JAFA talking!! The only thing good about Pauanui is that's where we Tairuians send our sewage!!:}

The first photo isn't showing.:confused::confused:

slackie 12th Nov 2008 00:47

Nope....says THIS PHOTO OR VIDEO HAS BEEN MOVED OR DELETED

If you know Slipper Is and Pauanui then you should be aware of this one...

Sorry, don't have an actual photo, and all credit must go to GOOGLE MAPS!!

HardCorePawn 12th Nov 2008 00:51

Nope... but I am now!

I haven't actually been into Pauanui yet... just a flyby on Sunday. It's on my list of places to visit, as are all the airfields on both sides of the Coromandel.

So far I have managed Thames and Waihi Beach :ok:
