Devil

that leave a gap around the side bars.
The other way to tell a pilot is is if he or she are wearing a pair of elastic sided boots. R.M.Williams are the favourite when the wearer can afford them.
Hmm.. I happen to wear elastic sided boots (steel caps) when Glider towing in the Pawnee. They are Mongrel brand, so what does that say of me?

I always though that there was no need to identify a pilot in a crowd, he would identify himself at the first opportunity!

Elastic sided RM Williams boots …… probably good boots but, no class.
Probably why many pilots like them so much.
Why would you need boots to fly a plane off bitumen runways and from terminal buildings?

Indeed! ASAIC. Most RM Williams stuff these days is pretentious, overpriced gear mainly worn by City based trendies who want to look 'cool!'
I have never seen any 'Ringer' in places like the Pub in Boulia (A Saturday Night at that place was an 'Education') wearing any RM Williams boots or gear. Blundstone or Rossi boots to be sure though..

Ariat is the popular choice these days by ringers.

RM used to be popular boots and clothes in country areas, but the quality of the clothes went down and the price of everything went up. And by a lot! I bought my first pair of RM boots in 2008 for $330. They were bloody good boots too, and lasted very regular wear for over 10 years before they needed replacement. But then when they did, they were nearly $800!

But the point I was going to get to, was that maybe some people want to wear them because they are comfortable, not because they’re apparently “pretentious”. I know mine always have been comfortable. And they look perfectly acceptable as dress boots to go with a uniform.

Struth!! Back in my days working on a Seismic Survey crew the boots worn by most on the crew were Redwings. The longer type, Calf length I think they were called, and in 1982 I paid just over $300 for mine. They lasted until about mid '88 before one of the heels wore out!

Had it 'reheeled' but it was never the same. Still have them though...

But for what it's worth; I do have two RM Williams belts. However, they were classed as 'seconds' (no idea why as they looked ok when I bought them) and therefore less than half normal retail price. Which was roughly the same price as a 'generic' belt of the same style.

My RMs still going after 30 years. A few resoles (not leather) but worth the $300.

but you won’t catch me in a RM chambre (sp?) logoed shirt or chinos.

You don't need them but when they are very comfortable and last for yonks, why wouldn't you?
I had 2 pairs of RM's in the last 25 years of my career. The first I replaced after 15 years of almost daily wear as I was too lazy to send them in and get the elastic replaced and the second pair are still in very good condition although not worn nearly as often as they were up until 2 years ago when still working.

I noticed some when I followed Mrs C441 into the RMs outlet store down the coast recently. They were $399 Craftsman boots with a mark in the leather about where your achilles meets your ankle; so hardly noticable that I nearly bought 'em.

Elastic Sided Boots - Any Brand

With elastic sided boots , all brands, one thing that erks me is the pull tag on the back.
My pants always rested between the tag and my leg so I cut off the tag.
Now my pants leg drop to the full length and looks far better than a guy who wear pants that get snagged by the pull tag.
Yes, I like the better appearance without that tag.
OK, Trolls, go for it!

Currently using the Garmin D2 AIR X10, really basic but great all rounder watch for layovers, time-zones and fitness.

I've been flying professionally for over 35 years and have never seen the need for anything more than a basic analogue watch. As time passes there are more and more devices in aircraft that dispaly time in UTC , local or whatever time zone you choose if you can be bothered to fiddle enough. If you can find a pilot these days that doesn't have a smart phone permanently held in one hand or the other I will be very surprised. Most of the folk I fly with seem reluctant to put them down on the console for long enough to conduct a take off or landing! Do you really need another watch??

I've held a CPL or an ATPL for just on 55 years.
If I want another watch, I'll get another watch. I may not need it, I likely can't justify it, probably can't afford it, but I seriously don't care what someone else might think. Sheesh, some people! I was married to someone like that once.

Nah, don't bother. Like many things in modern life, they sure don't make them like they used to!

My point Prickly was merely that you don't NEED a fancy watch to aviate. I can't quite figure out how you think I told you or anybody else not to buy a watch. If watches are your thing go buy a watch. There are obviously lots of pilots who love fancy watches and good luck to them. I own more motorbikes than I have fingers but I don't NEED any of them.

I nearly ground looped Pawnee because of Red Backs steel caps. No more steel caps boots for me when flying..

How on earth did you manage that??

Never ever come close to even a hint of looking like ground looping a Pawnee in 1400+ hours Glider towing! (Touch wood)

I said nearly..
Steel caps size 11 hits the metal above the brakes in dual pa25 . You're pushing pedal hard but nothing happens.

Lessons learnt, no steel caps for me when flying anything.
