Boys. I've been a bit down on this too lately. But events in recent times have given me some kind of hope.
Ie..
Recently we've all heard about Nelson Mandela spending 27 years in a tiny cell, and became the president of a country afterwards. We've been 18-24 months on a holdfile. Seems like a p!SS in the ocean in comparison.
Look at Qantas/jetstar circus at the moment - I'd rather be on the VA holdfile any day.
They are the pick of the bunch to work for in this country.
Keep 'holding' on

Guys, waiting around for Virgin to take you off the hold file may mean you end up missing the boat. Read the VIPA and AFAP newsletters, together with company financial reports, and it's evident any recruitment, let alone growth, has come to a grinding halt.
Now throw in the Qantas saga and what it could do to the pilot market. QF international is very likely to become a dead duck. A number of Qantas pilots will then be made redundant - either international or domestic. There's all sorts of claims that more senior international pilots will end up replacing a number of domestic pilots. That will mean an over supply of pilots. The ex-QF pilots will then grab whatever Tiger, Cobham, Jetstar jobs they can in order to keep paying the mortgage. Some might even head for the turbo prop operators. Sure, some pilots will head overseas, but not all of them. Can you see how this will end up similar to the market from 2001 to around 2005?
So unless you're happy to stick around your current job for the medium to long term waiting for Virgin to call, make the most of other opportunities before it is too late.

FTS is on the money there. Don't think I'd be waiting for VA to call if I was trying to move on. Take what you can get. Unless your happy in your present situ.

I wonder how long before the hold file is scrapped? Surely it can't be long now.
On NZ side. They have a fairly descent EBA and are on the group list so anyone joining Virgin in Oz after July 2012 will be below them on the list.

Why would Virgin, or any other airline scrap a hold file? Sounds pretty nonsensical to me, considering it probably cost them a couple of grand per candidate to interview them from start to finish.
When the time comes for Virgin to hire again, they'll just start contacting people on the list and start offering positions. If you've moved on-more power to you. If not, enjoy the ride.
In the meantime, if the hold file looks like it's getting a bit lean, they'll simply interview and top the list up.
It's no different to any other airline in the world.
At least Virgin doesn't force you to do everything again (at your cost) after 2 years. One's S & P is not going to change in such a short period of time

Tiger wiped their hold file when they started flying again after their grounding, despite no imposition placed on them regarding pilot experience from CASA.

Gday Atlas….I wouldn't be surprised if they have all been told to take annual leave or leave without pay considering how quiet its been on the recruiting front …nearly 2 and a half years now for me on the hold file. Hopefully things turn around for the better sometime soon

Early last year a few courses for CRZFO were conducted, the guys were all short listed from the domestic hold file pool. This was to increase the experience levels of the relief pilots.
There was a specific CRZFO hold file, those pilots have been waiting a long time and with maybe only piece meal hiring in the future (if at all), the next batch of CRZFO's will most probably come from the domestic pool. If there any are left to choose from.
It's unfortunate for the guys out there still waiting for the call, my advice would be to take care of yourself and your own career rather than wait. If and when the call comes, then make your decision. With pure date of joining seniority for new hires and no sign of mass hiring, a 777 relief role could be the only way to join the company in the future.

Without knowing how long it will take for the next VAA,VAI,VANZ intake I would still say that the integration of the VARA pilots onto the list is still years away and the next few intakes will be ahead of the VARA guys.
Considering the rocky route taken when VAA,VAI,VANZ were integrated with the input of three unions I would suggest the VARA experience will be just a 'laboured' as they have the TWU to add to the mix.
No pun intended.
