It wont surprise me to see the better applicants go to Jetstar where they will have a command after 3 to 5 years (on good money) as against still being a second officer in Qantas.
Good money? You are kidding aren't you? For the first 3-5 years you are on more money at QF as an S/O than a Jetstar F/O, then once you're a Qantas F/O (depending on aircraft type) you're probably just shy of a Jetstar captain for the next 5 years. After 10 years in the company as a 744 or A380 F/O you'd be earning more than a Jetstar skipper. Once you get a command at QF you just keep pulling away.

Someone can probably refine those numbers a bit and come up with some exact figures but you get the drift.

I'm still laughing about the "good money" line, hahaha

T.L., Spoken like a true 400 S/O!
It probably is good money when compared to what some of your QF S/O 'brothers' on the 330 and 73 F/O's are earning, and working harder for it I might add.

At the end of the day if you are happy working where you are then it's happy days.

Let's say in year 4 at Jetstar you are a captain on the A320 on 200K. How does that compare with QF after 4 years??

You do keep pulling away once a Captain in QF. But that is 13 - 15 years from starting. The JQ guy has been on 200k since year 4. That's the pay side of the scale. Then add in job satisfaction (career growth/responsibility) and JQ starts to look more appealling.

34R,

My line about "good money" wasn't about what people in QF earn. It was in relation to the wages of a JQ pilots (Captains in particular). However, I am of the belief that no Qantas S/Os should earn more than F/Os but unfortunately that's not the case.

kelly,

Job satisfaction at JQ? 4 sector domestic days, 4-5 days a week? Great for a while especially if you had young kids or a wifey, but at least at QF you get the option of going back to long haul (or asian/"regional" flying) one day if you so desire. In my eyes, that's the beauty of Qantas, for the time being anyway! Each to their own though...

Yep all good this end - was actually curious for guys like yourself that are still hangin' around waiting and waiting.... trust me I know how it feels

At least if the rumours are true (ie time frames are now being given) people can get on with their lives instead of waiting everyday for a bloody phone call.

Just tryin to help

Oh yeah kellykelpie what a load of bull "a 4 year captain in Jet* on 200k" driving an a320 ,and 'the cream of pilots are going to Jet* or tiger instead of QF', and "Job satisfaction" in Jet*, what the fk? I dont know where your getting your MISinformation from but its quite obvious the high temps and humidity in singapore have had its toll on your brain cells.

MH has been calling everyone progressively over the last few weeks giving the same information. Feb and Mar courses cancelled most likely. Small April course and nothing big in the way of courses until July '09. Again (and as always), this hinges on the re-forecast which was apparently to come out of the meeting held on Christmas eve.

He did go out of his way to reassure all the LOI holders I've talked to (including myself) that at this stage their plan is to recruit us all - even though the dates are obviously pushed back. He acknowledged it's frustrating but said it's as much out of his hands as it is ours right now. There are 50 LOI holders and we all SHOULD get a go in '09.

Hope that helps.

KK - What is your source for J* commands within 3 to 5 years of employment. That may have happened in the past but what about looking forward.

As for money, I was once shown a payslip by a QF 744 SO (6th year service), last payslip for the financial year show'd gross earnings $184K, included Super & allowances. But that aint bad dosh for working half a much as a J* A320 Captain.

As for job satisfaction, ask the guys who have returned from MOU hotspots why they came back to mainline. They'll tell you they returned to QF mainline for BOTH money & lifestyle.

Well first post for the new year; thought I'd get this one back up in peoples view!

FACTS:
* Pilot recruitment got back to business on Monday 5th.
* Numbers for 09 meant to be announced next Thursday 15th.
* Small course starts Monday 12th.
* I know 4 colleagues who did Stage 3 in september without a word (my hat goes off to anyone who can be so patient).
* I know 3 (I'm one of them) who did stage 2 in December.
* I know 2 other colleagues with expired letter of intents (as in expected start date has passed).

Does anyone care to take a punt to what's gonna happen early 09?? Remembering the last published number of intakes for 09 was meant to be 118??

Cheers to us all who are waiting for some news soon!! Happy 09.

Unfortunatley it's just the nature of the beast......you need to be really good at watching water boil.

I got close to the finish line back in '06, but then a lid got put on recruiting for about 18 months.....then my testing info expired so had to do that again.....now I can really do maths!!

I'd say on "average" I'd allow about 12 months from starting the selection process to getting in the door of an airline that's hiring.....done that a few times It does take patience, you just have to hang in there.

I thought the rumors were not many intakes until the new FY. Will be interesting to see what the new revised figures are.

hang in there

G'day Rhodes - Sorry just realised I didn't reply. That call from MH was about mid December.

Beaver, where did you hear that figure of 118 for 2009 intakes? I haven't heard that from anywhere. Would be interested to know your source. Last I heard was that probably not much until July. If they're gonna take 118 minus Jan (and possibly small April) course from July onwards then there's going to have to be some serious recruiting.

The fact they were still testing for psych, skills and sim/interview from September onwards is still a good sign in my opinion. When they halted recruitment completely from mid 2005 - mid 2007 they didn't do any testing whatsoever.

Heard a rumour that the Jan course has been cancelled, or at least some of it (maybe a certain fleet??). Don't know where this leaves the people on it or for those hoping for an April or July course......Can anyone confirm this?

Eight 744 slots reportedly cancelled from the January course starting next Monday.

Not good news.

Well yeah, I 'd say it is. They don't need to give him a job but recognise that he is significantly out of pocket by the move to their company so they are to find a fix.

From the website as of today....

Qantas Trainee Second Officer positions are subject to continual review in response to the changing aviation environment.

Qantas Pilot Recruitment will not be accepting new or updated applications effective from 1 January 2009 to 30 June 2009. This period may be extended in line with fleet requirements. Updated information will be posted at qantas.com, as and when it is made available.

All current applications have been deferred. Updated information will be posted at qantas.com, to those candidates impacted by this change, as and when it is made available.

Makes you realise just how accurate that PATS is that keeps advertising on AFAP about the "120 SOs over next 12months"

I would say there is no accuracy at all in future planned figures, they change by the month! Apply then get on with it, some people wait 1-2 years then get a call out of the blue, build your career non QF so your not stagnate waiting for them, the best way. I would not reccomend sitting around waiting for them when other opportunties await! good luck!
