Hi,
I'm currently flying the 737-800 in JAA land. When I was in Aus Qantas wouldn't look at me for the cadetship because I don't have the required high school maths and didn't take physics at school. Do these requirements still exist for direct entry pilots ?
I have 1000 hours on the 737 and 1200TT.
Thanks !

little bit of research reveals a lot doesn't it!
About Qantas - Qantas Careers - Pilots - Direct Entry Criteria
and do you have the right to live and work in Australia unrestricted? ie At least a residency permit?

Same old tricks
The worst thing about Qantas is their pilot recruiting. The same things that you guys are seeing now has been going on for years and it is a shame to see that despite new management these old tricks continue to be played out.
I have noticed that time on the hold file is a very unfair and difficult to measure science. It seems that certain companies {such as GFS} get through the hold file a lot quicker than everyone else, coincidence?
I wish you guys all the best in a very unstable environment, however is is still blatantly obvious that Qantas will need hundreds of guys over the next few years so the hold file will progress eventually. Despite their wish, they cant fill every slot with the most inexperienced pilots in the industry, oh i mean cadets.
Good Luck!!

I heard this morning that there was only 2 on the course that started yesterday and that the next course is not until december and will also be a small number course.
Can anyone on the inside confirm or deny the above with certainty?

I have recently been given the option to choose between the A330, A380 or B747, as all who are being recruited now have this choice.\
The company states it will try to accomodate your choice when fleet courses are drawn up. I have done many for and againts between the A380 and B747, in the short term and long term, but I still cannot be sure if I am making the right choice for my long term happiness???
Why was there such a lack of enthusiasm by those already inside QF to move across to the A380 from the A330 fleet when given the opportunity. I would like to know, why a new A/C with new equipment would be so hard to initially crew by those inside QF to transfer onto the biggest A/C, but is it the best??????
Please explain, should I chose the B747 or A380 for the long term happiness and also timeline from S/O to F/O??????
What is the inside story?????

I flew a couple of weeks ago with a senior check captain (who has done his A380 training), and mentioned that a few of my mates had just started on the A380. He looked at me and said "You reckon being an S/O on this thing is boring? You should see how little they are involved on the A380 Flight Deck". He then went on to explain that with all of the electronic flight displays/documentation, there was bugger all for the guys in the observers seats to do.
Perhaps that has something to do with it - or perhaps it has more to do with the extremely limited route structure...?

Nunc est bibendum
Yadot, timeline from S/O to F/O will not be impacted one zot by your initial fleet type. It's purely seniority driven. When your number is senior enough to get a slot you'll get a slot- assuming your sim results stay good.
Why the lack of enthusiasm from those inside QF? Many reasons.
If you want to 'learn' about QF operations and get at least a smattering of exposure over the network then the 744 or A330 is going to be the best place as a S/O.
Why the lack of enthusiasm from those inside QF? Many reasons.
- The first couple of years of a new type invariably result in lots of training trips and that means disruption and lack of flying.
- It also means inefficient trips as you have to hang around waiting for the next airframe to arrive. IE arrive SIN and it has to go to LHR, back to SYD and then back to SIN again before you do the next sector. You're then doing the same again in London. Minimum of 48 hour slips everywhere is great for sight seeing but no good if you want to be at home with the family. An 'up and back' London trip is going to be about eleven days and possibly a day or two longer.
- As Johnny pointed out, the flying it will be doing is back to back LA flying. That's even more boring than 14 SYD-MEL-SYD sectors over four days.
- When you have family and lifestyle issues to consider the prospect of a new aircraft type doesn't tend to appeal as much.
- Given the rate of promotion at the moment a transfer to the A380 is going to lock you there for longer than you may like if you'd stayed on your current fleet.
- The less exposure to the QF 'training' environment the better.
- Lack of certainty about pay and conditions, etc
If you want to 'learn' about QF operations and get at least a smattering of exposure over the network then the 744 or A330 is going to be the best place as a S/O.

Thanks Keg,
I have taken on board as to what you have said and I am glad I chose the 747 at this stage and I will stick with it.
It may be a head turner...for the chicks???....to say that you are on the A380, but as you get further in this career the easier it seems to get and the more repetitive and boring.
I want to enjoy my time as an S/O and have a drink in as many bars around the world as possible, that was why I got into this industry.
The good old days of seeing the world have gone, but I guess the different route structure on the 747 will give me a good opportunity for bar hopping.
Also, on the A330, how long would it take for me to use the MOU (i think it is called)...to temp transfer to Jetstar as a F/O on the bus.... at least that way your seniority at qf is moving up the line whilst you are an F/O driving domestically??? Are many people in QF currently doing this??? Do you have to wait for a certain period as an S/O, 6 months etc before this opportunity comes up??

Yadot, further to what Tankengine has said, i believe the MOU for transfers to Jetstar and vice versa only applies to guys with seniority from a few years ago when the MOU was established..ie it doesn't apply to new hires. There are apparently "ghost" seniority numbers in both companies from the MOU, but they're no use if your not released to take up the offer.
