Just out of curiosity, when do the QCCA crew who will be doing A380 only start training? Im aware that the crew scheduled for the next few schools are being trained on the current Longhaul fleet, but was curious as to when A380 only will be starting. Just a thought!

A380

The offer for current long haul crew to go to A380 expired yesterday. Management will be sifting through the applications and then determining how many more crew they will need.

Its possible that some will come from current QCCA crew and others will be by direct recruitment over the next few months. Training starts in June/July and the 1st flight is in October.

Dont get too worked up about it there is still a way to go in crew logistics

A380

QCCA sent an email to all current crew last week stating that Qantas have advised ''there will be no external recruitment directly onto the A380''
All A380 positions will be filled by current long haul crew and QCCA crew who have previously flown on B747,B767,A330 aircraft.

Mr Seatback we'll need a bigger bucket for the stash of eggs.

You know I can't figure this whole process out, I know I keep saying this is your week but surely it must be your turn to hear the good news. Doesn't make sense for them to give you a no after all this time and after coming so far in the process.

Think it's time for some internal investigation my friend... and I mean for your application not what I know you're thinking.

Hey Patty...you up for some manouvres?

A380 with LHR crew

Hi there.

I know this is the QCCA thread but just thought I'd share some info. I recently attended a Welcome Aboard Day at LHR (I wasn't successful but didn't expect to be, so am not bitter) and they mentioned that LHR based crew will be trained on the A380. I know that is different to what I read on here, so am just curious as to what the reality will be.

I'm also curious as to know more about the PER shuttles. How many of these can you operate in a row. Are there MBTs attached to it, or can you bunch them together and take your days off all together?

What about manoeuvres with me ABP? I'm a dab hand with a wine glass!

Internal investigation eh? I suggest you and the other Charlie's Angels get together for a movement on QCC recruitment. I can just see it...you, Patty and a few others in black leotards, ninja style (with Kill Bill swords, and a modern scarf - for that bit of colour!)

I'm a wee bit sloshed (I attacked my own mini bar - desperate, or resourceful I ask myself!)...so I won't engage further in any other witty repartee tonight.

I look forward to turning up on your doorstep when the next distress flare is sent (re: my earlier text message), with an empty bucket and a garden full of Easter Eggs (hope your kids don't mind a bit of competition)

Private joke cartex - well, private amongst ABP, Patty, etc.

Don't worry - I won't delve any further into it here!

Back to the topic of recruitment (by the way, these questions aren't a case of sour grapes...more a case of 'what the hell is going on?'):

1. Recently, JQ people have been progressing straight through to panel interviews. All well and good, but some are being offered the job without medicals, height checks, etc. NOW...as a former JQ-er, I'm all for JQ people being given the green light, but it was not always the case. Some very good people got knocked out of the process on their performance in the group interview and role play. NOW - some drifting pieces of deadwood are being given the red carpet treatment!

How is it feasible for a company to determine the suitability of an applicant on the basis of a panel interview lasting approx. 20 minutes vs. seeing people in group interactions, performance in role plays... To me, it makes a mockery of the process for all those who had to go through it earlier. Additionally, a few 'undesirables' are making it through because of this stripped back process (undersirable as in they wouldn't work in a batch of yeast. If they can't do the Jetshop on an A320 without complaining - repeatedly I might add - how the hell will they manage full service on a jumbo? And jet lag? Crew rest! Some of these people are in a permanent state of crew rest!)

Oh - and for the record - the majority are lovely people. But some I wouldn't employ to walk my dog. It's not a superiority complex on my part - it's the reputation some of those indicated have earned with the passage of time.

To me, this 'stripping back' has created more loopholes that will eventually force existing QF Long Haul crew to deal with 'issues' that ideally shouldn't exist on the basis of poor follow through in the process.

2. Has this same opportunity (panel interviews only) been extended to QantasLink crew, or other airlines (ie. Rex)? One would hope so, in the sense of fair play and consistency

3. Where does this leave people who are still waiting for news, since those being appointed in Point 1 are being given training dates ahead of those who've been waiting for weeks?

QF Recruitment - at the best of times - can be very disorganised. I understand and appreciate the volume of work that has to be administered. What I FAIL to understand is how undesirable candidates with existing employment (barely employed, I might add), get through ahead of others who had to go through all the hoops for the same role! AT the risk of a cliche, this is all turning into a 'swiss cheese' model.

No recruitment process is perfect, nor will it ever be. Even though I am one of the 'waiting ones' left hanging while this activity goes on around me, I've got my hands full with other projects. It wouldn't bother me if they turned around and said 'no thanks' tomorrow - seriously. It's this indecision that's annoying.

If anyone can shed any light on this matter, I know it would be appreciated. Some of my mates who've gone through the schools (past and present) are annoyed they had to go through the expense and time of the whole process, over others who've been given 'a golden ticket'. Fairness doesn't come into it, as far as QCCA is concerned - I get that. What I fail to understand is how a company elevates this position as being one with rigorous checks - and all indications, lately, to the contrary.

If the people you refer to as "drifting pieces of dead wood" are able to avoid the same vetting procedure that initials go through, it is because they have a record of their employment within the QF group.
Now if they are so bad, but have no blemishes on their record, that is unfortunate.
The reality is that the current recruitment is massive, and in theory their BPR's with Jetstar should be a much better indicator than any group session, and will certainly save the recruitment team a great deal of work.

That's just it twiggs - some of these folk have a recorded history within Jet*. This doesn't stop them. I know of at least two who went sick to attend the panel day.

You'd THINK it would sound alarm bells - that is if, of course, it's being passed on. Or checked.

But how can you be sure that their poor work performance has been documented, Mr Seatback?
Just because you have observed someones performance to be below par, does not mean they continually have bad BPR's written about them.
Get used to it because if you do get the gig, you will fly with hopeless cases that have never had a bad BPR written about them, maybe because they know how to play the game or maybe because the CSM's/CSS's they mainly fly with don't believe in "bad" BPR's.

Mr seatback,
Are the crew you are talking about from dom or int?? i know many people prob 50+ that have gone for an interview and all of which have had to go through the entire process like everyone else. Some were not required to do a medical this was due to them having done a medical at the qantas approved dr less than twelve months ago. Whilst i have never in a year of flying called in sick and really dont believe in doing so unless necessary i can see that some crew have been forced to do so by jetstar, having to bid for days off 8 weeks prior to a roster, constantly being forced to work on our days off and crewing having to many swap requests so just not bothering it can be impossible for someone to make it to an interview without having to use a sick day...

Mr Seatback, there are 1 hour panel interviews being offered and extended to anyone with current or previous flying experience with any airline (JQ, DJ, QFLink, ZL and any airline worldwide for that matter) as long as they have been referred by an existing QCCA employee via an online booking system similar to the booking system for the recruitment day.

It's unfortunate those who are still waiting... well... are still waiting... but I guess if you were in the situation or being offered a 1 hour panel interview over a recruitment day... I think you'd know which one you'd take.

I hope for your sake and sanity that you hear either way from recruitment in due course.

Twiggs - believe me, these particular individuals have a written record. That's all I'll say. Small bases, if you get my drift.

It's not so much a case of hopeless cases getting the gig - that will continue to happen forever in life in any job. It's more a question of PROVEN hopeless cases managing to slide through loopholes we're not all afforded.

jqboy - These particular individuals are not Int or Team Jet*...they're a bit older than either of those entities. I can understand the position someone in those areas would be in, and I know how quickly these things can come up out of nowhere. But, we've all had to deal with it from time to time (not just me). I know what you mean about the swap issue at crewing...but we all have ways of getting around that.

transcon - These people were offered the panel before the referral thing came into play. THAT'S what a lot of people are upset about - including those who are already in training.

Thank you for clarifying the issue of other crew from other airlines being afforded the same thing. Glad to hear it too!

It's not so much for my sanity, in spite of my perceived bias. Right now, I'm beyond caring for my situation in this. I'm more upset for some of my close friends (those that are in, and those who are no longer in the running) who weren't given this 'bypass' opportunity. It's just a question of fairness.

And hey, if it were me, of course I'd go for the panel over the full day - I'm not dumb! But it isn't consistent, and that's my beef. If you're not measuring people one to another at recruitment using the same methods, then you're setting yourself up for a fall along the line - and you're not measuring people equally through the process - and that, to me, is unfair.

These interviews are for the SAME position - not different categories/positions, so there shouldn't be any changes to this process midway. Of course what SHOULD occur, and what DOES occur, will always be two different things in this industry.

Mr Seatback 2

I really dont think QF Recruitment have the time or resources to go through JQ, QFLink employees personal files nor do I think those airlines and Rex will even send employees personal files to QF for perusal.

Therefore any past performance or sick leave issues will not even come to the attention of QF unless of course this is past on from the relevant airlines during a reference check.

After the panel interview QF recruitment would more than likely call the relevant airlines and if the staff member giving the reference knows the applicant personally which would be the case at QFLink and Rex as they are smaller they would generally not have to refer to the applicants personal file therefore anything in their past will not be passed onto QF it will just be information that the referee gives on the day.
