PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok
ANG hill now days has been ran down in typical PNG fashion. ANG could be making loads of extra cash now days if they would have looked after the place given the current realestate boom going on in POM at the moment, not to mention the fact that they could have a lot more expats based in POM like in the old days,if the hill was clean, safe and well maintained.
However, the Talair Dreamworld is still pritty much like it was in the old days and it's very well maintained, the Brian Bell Company now own it,so obviously old Brian must have hired someone good to manage and run the property before he sadly past away.
Hey Chuck,no worries these day in doing a few beatups over the hill or Boroko,as CAA will never catch you as they haven't got anyone ! Although I guess ACARS would catch guys out these days if they can't locate the CBs.

The Rego on that DC3.... must be story behind that. Weren't they all changed to ANA etc.. I unfortunately just missed the PX DC3 era by a matter of months, going straight on the flying dog whistle F27.
I saw a turbine powered version DC3 in Khartoum, Sudan a few months ago, apparently owned by some mob in South Africa and doing UN charter work... very impressive.

P2-SBD
High 6, you are right, Air Niugini sourced their DC-3s from TAA "Sunbird" stocks (VH-SBD was one) and maybe even some Ansett examples, There must have been a transition period before they were reregistered as Alpha Novembers

Bob Wills joined Air Niugini for a short time in the early 70s then left for either Ansett or East West.....seem to recall it may have been Ansett and he ended up flying Electras with the Wombat Squadron

Out of interest hows the weather up there?
In '74 with cyclones and floods in OZ, the weather was decidedly more ****house than normal in PNG .
I wonder if the same is happening?
The WX in Darwhine this past week I reckon, is back on par with what it was in the early 80's

50 Years Today
This is a selfish little post to mark the day, 23rd January,1961, that I stepped onto Jacksons' tarmac out of a TAA DC-6B. In starched shirt, shorts and long white socks - I was off to lift TPNGs' agriculture into the new age. Didn't quite work out that way, but I tried.
Home for a month was Ranuguri Hostel in Lawes Rd, just up the hill from DASF where we were 'indoctrinated'. The more important social education work was done in the Konedobu Club, which in those days occupied a prime waterside block. I distinctly remember the vile taste of SP, which, after being raised on XXXX, took some adjustment. Later in the 60's when I lived in POM, we used to buy our SP in pallet loads direct from the brewery, (anyone else do that?), and it was really cheap. I think we got it for about $8-$10 per carton. In '62 we were able to land VB cartons in Madang for 2 pound 10 shillings.
Back to the story though. After the intro course I went to the DASF Kerevat Research Station out of Rabaul for more agronomy work, then on to Mt Hagen, where I became the resident 'didiman' on Korn Farm Res. Stn. Many of you are familiar with the current Hagen airport at Kagamuga - Korn Farm is down the Minj road a few km from there. In about July 1961, I was one of many 'gang foremen' who oversaw the clearing of the airport site - which we burnt off in Sept 1961. There were more auli at that event than at any of the Shows!
Never thought I'd be flying over the country a few years later, but flying became a passion and where better to hone that, than in PNG?
Won't bore the long socks off you - just noting it as my '50th year since' and also to advise that, after 48 years in the saddle, I'm still a current G1 and enjoying my 'retirement job' of teaching the basics.
cheers, poteroo.

looking for an old Navy buddy - Bill Moore
Barry,
I was a formation flight instructor and Hurricane Hunter in the Navy from 1968 to 1971. Bill Moore and I went through multi-engine training together in Corpus Christi. He was in the Typhoon Hunters while I was in the Hurricane Hunters in Jacksonville. I lost touch with him over the years.
Recently I have been trying to locate him, but there are just too many Bill Moores out there. I ran across this 2005 posting of yours that my Google search on "bill moore bush pilot minnesota" returned. The last place I knew Bill lived was Rochester, MN.
Was the Bill Moore in the list for your 2005 posting the Bill Moore I am looking for? If so, do you know how I can contact him?
Thanks,
Rich VanDeventer

Poteroo, did you know Nick Crawley? Knew him when he was didiman for BCL in mid '70s. His name came up in conversation a couple of weeks ago, believe he's still in contact with some ex-BCL people.
Wellwood and Fallon came up to TPNG in 1961 about the same time as I did - but I never shared a posting with them. They must have been in Hagen later in 60's when I was in POM.
Don't know Crawley.
TAL's crew in Hagen while I was there included Peter Hurst, and also Colin Hey was often there ex Goroka. Met Colin in the 90's when I began doing BFR's for the Beverley Soaring Society tuggies. A small world in GA.
happy days,

Bill Moore was a pilot with Air Niugini but he was an Australian. One of the Air Niugini guys here may know his contact details.
Those who lived in the Eastern Highlands should remember Rick Giddings, Kiap and later Magistrate in Goroks. Rick and Lyn Giddings stayed on in PNG well after Independance; I think he retired in the early 1990s and now lives at Pontville in Tasmania.
Rick's daughter Lara was born in Goroka in 1972, went to Goroka International School (with my kids and many other Talair kids) and was something of a swimming champion.
Tomorrow, Lara Giddings will become the first woman Premier of Tasmania.
