One wonders if one would have had the required cojones to pull the trigger if confronted. Remember, the buggers have a habit of keeping coming even if you hit 'em dead centre.

PNG is a wonderful wonderful place and the vast bulk of the population are just great people. I have many, MANY VERY fond memories of PNG - but it has law and order issues that simply can't be ignored.
The only remorse I ever suffered was allowing my then wife to badger me into leaving my Glock at home on what turned out to be the night the aeroclub was attacked. I never left it home again.
....some 'very silly Talair pilots' (The actual words used!) had been shooting their pistols off the balcony of their residence at various things ....
Another incident that attracted the attention of the Constabulary was the ex Macair pilot taxiing a Baron at Wau, reached across his front RH seat passenger, opened the door and shot a stray dog that wandered onto the strip.
There were other incidents but I don't recall the details.
Chuck is correct, the good days are gone. I went from never locking my doors in 1963, to barbed wire, guns, dead locks and security guards in 1985.
I sometimes wonder where it will all end up? It can never change until honesty and integrity comes into the political system.

Yeah some fool that shot holes in the rainwater tank, can't remember where and the famous "Please yer honour I shot six of 'em cos I only had six rounds"

Ah Tinpis, certainly do.
Friend of mine and fellow company Pilot took out a Chimbu in his lounge room early one morning. When the Constabulary arrived first comment was 'Bloody Heck, dead before he hit the floor' followed shortly by 'Excellent, been after this fellow for a while now.'
Needless to say at the time the Copper was one of the few remaining expats in Lae at the time.

However, I have it on good authority (he was ex-SAS) that a 'double tap' to the head can ruin someones whole day!
Torres, Cannot remember ever seeing the pub pictured. Where was it?
Only ever went to Club Dero, the Davara and a few other establishments of reasonable repute.

I recall an incident on PX Hill with ex-Talair pilots (Robbo and Weasel) discharging firearms from their balconies into the settlements below, this got the attention of the local branch of the firestone cops. The Weasel ran a thriving trade keeping all of us residents on PX Hill armed to the teeth, but to his credit he bought back the "piece" he sold me for the same price when I left.
The Bottom Pub is now a modernish building housing the ANZ bank, with a nice blue and white wall lovingly redecorated by buai spit !!
Good time to wish all wantoks on this forum a Hepi Krismas na Bigpela Amamas long 2011!!

Did that stop the gunfight in the settlement H6?
Many a night we could hear gunfire from our houses on ANG Hill. Although it rarely seemed to be deliberately aimed uphill I think the Hosties down near the bottom fence may have wondered.
Robbo was ex GV? And then there was 'Shaggs' and his 'Gatt' - a model 1911 Colt 45
Unfortunately there are always a few for whom 'youthful high jinx' and a firearm prove a less than optimum combination.
I had a really cool Baretta 9mm (look alike) air pistol - powered by one of those soda stream bottle thingies. It carried 11 slugs from memory. Its only use appeared to be shooting rok roks off the living room walls with a skin full of rum.
It never occurred to me to do the same thing with the Glock 19...no matter how much rum had been imbibed.

I see High 6 refers to PX Hill and Chimbu Chuckles refers to ANG hill - are they one and the same ?
PX hill was comissioned by PX Gen Manager (Brian Grey) in 1976/77.
Some pictures of the construction may be of interest to those who came to reside on the hill.
regards

That's the one.... nice pics thanks Des.
With the closeness of the community up there, it was said that the most confusing day of the year on the Hill was always Fathers Day.......

Great piccies descol - my house was the one on the corner of the 'inner circle' and the road to the center of the circle straight opposite where the road up from the gate meets the circle.
I see they hadn't built the hostie accom along the bottom fence yet. Having said that I think pic two might be 'hostie row'.

What - from Pheggy's house?
BZ and I 'launched' an attack on the hill in a Dash 7 (after a engineering test flight) - went past (not over - past) just downhill from my house and kept descending across Boroko, at an altitude that doesn't bear quoting, as fast as Proud Mary would go.
"Ahh Chuck where does Al Craigie live?"
"Way the fck over there->"
"Good - call downwind will ya"
They couldn't see us from the Tower but when we 'popped up' over the old Talair 'Dreamworld' compound they just cleared us to land.
Of course then the lads figured it was carte blanche and for a while ANG Hill looked like a scene from 'The Dam Busters' - until Lekwe suggested to Bronte that it was time for the lads to cool it.
In the F28 an earlish right turn off 14R, at 0 dark thirty, clean up and accelerate to VMO would put you over the hill at a suitable altitude, at crackle power, and guaranteed EVERYONE was awake and stayed that way - well we were - ahhh the dulcet tones of a RR Spey at full noise
