Those who lived in the Eastern Highlands should remember Rick Giddings, Kiap and later Magistrate in Goroks. Rick and Lyn Giddings stayed on in PNG well after Independance; I think he retired in the early 1990s and now lives at Pontville in Tasmania.
Rick's daughter Lara was born in Goroka in 1972, went to Goroka International School (with my kids and many other Talair kids) and was something of a swimming champion.
Tomorrow, Lara Giddings will become the first woman Premier of Tasmania.
