Romania is a NATO state!

I'd assess that as a cock up, not an attack. Russia has shown over the past 19 months a substantial capacity for cockups. (See the recent news item on the engagement with Rivet Joint).

No nuclear vessel has been built in the black sead

For what it's worth, you don't need a nuke in the black sea. The Kilos with AIP gives you what you need, but my limited research shows that Kilo and the successor Lada appear to not have that fitted. (There was some work in that direction in the 90's as I recall). Even without AIP, Kilo covers the black sea sufficiently and cost effectively.

Why is Ukraine focused on striking Russian landing ships?
The ships are designed to save Russian logistics at the moment when the Ukrainian Defense Forces cut the railway line running through Tokmak. After that, the Russians plan to supply fuel to their army group in the occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia region (and in the southern part of Donetsk region) via occupied Mariupol, transferring fuel and heavy cargoes with the help of seacraft.

Shaping the battlefield, or the deep battle if you like.

From Retired General Ben Hodges.

Raids on Crimea and oil/gas platforms to eliminate radar, then a complex drone/missile strike against Sevastopol.
This is a very sophisticated approach to making Crimea untenable for the Russians.
The Ukrainian General Staff is running rings around the Russian General Staff.

I'll be sure to annotate, in pencil, those bits of my Encyclopedia Britannica with this new information bloody rubbish thanks to the brilliance of Russian historians.
(Upon further review, no, I won't).
As to the alleged "revenge for the loss of Challenger tanks."
The UK sold them/gave them away, why would they be seeking revenge? They were not crewed by Brits.
These two rounds fired in the information war fell short, I'd say. :p

Lithuania plans to seize Russian cars that are already in the EU

The confiscation of cars with Russian license plates will also affect those already in the EU in the future, the Lithuanian customs office has warned.

"Every Russian who owns a car registered in Russia must leave with this vehicle to third countries, the Russian Federation, Belarus," said the head of Lithuanian customs Darius Žvironas.

Estonia also warned about similar measures: cars with Russian license plates in the country should be re-registered or will be seized, said the head of the Interior Ministry.

An interesting read about Ukraines counter offensive and one part that explains why all those mine clearers are getting disabled in minefields.

minefields have two downsides, 1 they are static and 2 they tend to be in belts. So it doesn't matter how long or deep or dense it is, once the Ukrainians get through somewhere, they can flood through the gap and behind the minefield and suddenly it's worthless. Except has a headache to clear up at leisure so civilians can return. If this rapid mobility that UKR needs, rather than frontal slogging which is attritional which favours the Russians.

Not these days, they appear to be more fluid, did you read the article?

These antitank mines are often mixed with antipersonnel mines to inflict greater losses when vehicles are disabled, including PMN-4 pressure plate mines, OZM-72 bounding mines, and MON-50 and MON-200 directional fragmentation mines. Russian forces are also using FAB-100 and FAB-250 aerial bombs as improvised mines. Russia is remotely deploying mines with artillery, ISDM Zemledeliye mine-laying systems, and even drones, such as the POM-3 and PFM-1 antipersonnel mines. These are used to refill lanes cleared by Ukrainian sappers and to mine roads behind Ukraine’s front lines. Ukrainian mine-clearing vehicles, including those that carry mine-clearing line charges, are a priority target for Russian defenders and antitank guided missile teams. This has forced Ukraine to employ them more cautiously.

Nutty, fear not; it's only the Russians supporting the "string theory" parallel universe stuff. In our universe, the facts are established that WW-1 was the irrational outcome of Kaiser Bills desire to expand his turf, and WW-2 was the result of Molotov-Ribbentrop removing the check to Hitler's pushing the envelope of appeasement. Russia signed that, and they got the foreseeable consequence of that nonsense in mid 1941.

String theory is falling out of favour after 40 years of promising a major breakthrough and.... becoming a meme for "waiting...."

The EU are lifting sanctions on Russian Oligarchs and banning Ukrainian grain. With friends like that, you wonder whether they would be better off in a rejuvenated Commonwealth!

I know somewhere which would be happy to do extended live trials over the next 6-24 months…

The British Army has unveiled the Hydra 400 drone, which can launch Brimstone missiles.

At the Defence Security and Equipment International Exhibition and Conference (DSEI), representatives of the British Army said that the Hydra 400 "will offer the capabilities of an Apache attack helicopter but will fit in the trunk of a Land Rover".

According to them, it takes only six minutes to prepare the unmanned aerial vehicle for launch. The Hydra 400 will be able to carry up to three Brimstone air-to-ground missiles and will be able to destroy enemy vehicles within a radius of more than 32 km.

So far, the Hydra 400 exists in the form of a prototype. By the end of the year, the British Army plans to test the unmanned aerial vehicle during military exercises.

However, according to the military, due to bureaucratic nuances, the drone is likely to enter service only in five years….

I’m presuming this outward from their border and covers the Ukraine side of the river…..

Romania has declared an ‘Aerial Interdiction area’ along the Danube River Delta.

No-fly zone now covers 20-30kms from the River Danube and up to 4,000 meters.

Lonewolf_50 14th September 2023 19:17

Seems prudent.

One would think so, but no. According to the linked article, the no fly zone is 20-30 km around the border with Ukraine but on the Romanian side :ugh:

Ukrainian pilots have now been allowed to test fly the Gripen fighter plane, Defense Minister Pål Jonson wrote. The pilots have undergone orientation training which includes test flights in both aircraft and simulator and briefings for ground personnel.

Yes, I had seen it earlier, judging by the IR film there appears to be a hotspot on the hull which may well be a breach on the waterline.

As a footnote to that, I remember reading about the crew of a British WW2 PQ17 supply convoy arriving in a Russian port (Murmansk?) and seeing the local shipyard workers applying paint to their own vessel's hulls with bare hands. I wonder how much they've advanced ...
