I am hugely appreciative of all of your updates re the situation in Ukraine but your use of the phrase "tank ammo" is misleading. 105mm calinbre ammo is now largely defunct as tank ammo but widely used in the M119 howitzer and various other light artillery guns particularly where you are looking for high mobility and going after localised targets rather than entire grid squares. Keep up the good work and if I am wrong and it is indeed the case that older tank guns are being brought to bear I will have no problem providing a Mea Culpa.

Girkens quote of the day:

"Artillery, in addition to the actual shell hunger, is experiencing the same large-scale hunger of “fresh” barrels - the guns are already worn out, the rifling is “licked off” by a large shot." and "the artillery is gone".. and "exp artillery crews are being used as assault infantry".. and this is coming from the Russian side...

Slovenia provided 28 x M55S tanks to Ukraine in October 2022 - this is an upgraded T55 with a NATO standard 105mm gun replacing the original 100mm. This is the Royal Ordnance L7 rifled tank gun that's also used in the Leopard 1. So if "tank ammunition" is correct, it could be for the existing M55S or any future Leo 1s.

A different aspect. I can’t help thinking that if the RAF ran TV ads like the very last clip on here the recruitment would improve.

Ukrainian Strykers, note they appear to be using white squares not crosses on them.

From the New York Times just now (free viewing of some articles is allowed):

Classified war documents detailing secret American and NATO plans for building up the Ukrainian military ahead of a planned offensive against Russia were posted this week on social media channels, senior Biden administration officials said.

The Pentagon is investigating who may have been behind the leak of the documents, which appeared on Twitter and on Telegram, a platform with more than half a billion users that is widely available in Russia.

Military analysts said the documents appear to have been modified in certain parts from their original format, overstating American estimates of Ukrainian war dead and understating estimates of Russian troops killed.

The modifications could point to an effort of disinformation by Moscow, the analysts said. But the disclosures in the original documents, which appear as photographs of charts of anticipated weapons deliveries, troop and battalion strengths, and other plans, represents a significant breach of American intelligence in the effort to aid Ukraine.
Biden officials were working to get them deleted but had not, as of Thursday evening, succeeded.

“We are aware of the reports of social media posts and the department is reviewing the matter,” said Sabrina Singh, the deputy press secretary at the Pentagon.

The documents do not provide specific battle plans, like how, when, and where Ukraine intends to launch its offensive, which American officials say is likely coming in the next month or so. And because the documents are five weeks old, they offer a snapshot of time — the American and Ukrainian view, as of March 1, of what Ukrainian troops might need for the campaign.

To the trained eye of a Russian war planner, field general or intelligence analyst, however, the documents no doubt offer many tantalizing clues and insights. The documents mention, for instance, the expenditure rate of HIMARS — American-supplied high mobility artillery rocket systems, which can launch attacks against targets like ammunition dumps, infrastructure and concentrations of troops, from a distance. The Pentagon has not said publicly how fast Ukrainian troops are using the HIMARS munitions; the documents do.

US providing Ukraine with 30mm gun trucks to blast Iranian drones out of the sky

The mother of all technicals.

As part of its latest military assistance package to Ukraine, the United States is providing the Ukrainians with nine 30mm “gun trucks” to destroy Iranian-made drones, such as the Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 kamikaze drones, a senior defense official said.Little information is publicly available about what the gun trucks, a new weapons system, would look like.

“It’s literally what it sounds like, a 30-millimeter gun mounted on a truck,” the senior defense official told reporters on Tuesday. “Because that’s procurement, it’s going to take several months to be able to actually provide that to Ukraine.”…

The 30mm gun trucks will provide Ukraine with an inexpensive solution to the threat posed by Shahed drones, said Samuel Bendett, an adviser with CNA, a non-profit research and analysis organization in Arlington, Virginia….

“Essentially, the CUAS [counter-unmanned aerial systems] costs have to be driven down to the most cost-effective and workable solution — which the Ukrainians note is a mobile gun truck capable of taking out Shaheds,” Bendett told Task & Purpose. “Some of these also come with a searchlight to monitor Shaheds during the night on approach to possible Ukrainian targets.”

Czech volunteers have already donated 15 mobile MR-2 Viktor anti-drone systems to Ukraine, which use a pair of 14.5mm guns to shoot drones down, Bendett said. The system has been mounted in the bed of a pickup truck….

It’s possible the 30mm gun systems provided by the United States could fit in a Toyota Hilux or a slightly bigger pickup truck, said Bendett, who noted that a picture emerged from Yemen last year showing a giant Vulcan gun mounted in the back of a Toyota truck….

Daily dose of Russian state tv propaganda. They've changed their mind over Finland, NATO membership isn't the issue anymore, now it is the Finnish military power that scares them. And funnily enough they seem to be worried of just one military attache specifically. They make him sound like he's the err of one mr. Simo Häyhä.

The second army in the world is afraid of the Finnish army. Who knew.

The power of fear; to keep the Ruzo population on side and quaking in case Comrade Tzar putrid doesn't manange to keep the ravenning hordes at bay. Just scare them every now and then.

Those 'things' just appear to be on one of the aircraft, and are shaped just like the exhaust-plume upward deflectors we had on our Omani AB205s (I know - other Hueys had them first..) back in the 80s. Rather a drag-gy configuration, I would have thought.
- forgot to add: they were meant to diffuse the hot air from the exhaust into the MR downwash, thereby reducing the IR signature

The exhausts are probably these.

In an effort to enhance the jamming effect, the KT-01AVE operates best in conjunction with the original EVU exhaust suppressor or specially developed (by Adron) IR emission suppressor device (exhaust-mixer), installed on the exhaust ducts.

Adron also produces a vastly improved flare dispenser, the KUV-26-50-0 integrating two different types of dispenses –a large-calibre one firing 50mm flares and a small-calibre one firing 26mm flares. The use of a pre-programmed sequence of large and small-calibre flares is seen as another simple yet effective way of fooling IR seeking systems using flare rejection capability.

As Alyoshin explained, flares have a much higher temperature than engine exhaust gases and can be easily eliminated as valid targets by the seeker’s flare rejection algorithms, which sense the significant difference between the thermal signature of the target and the flare. So, in order to get around this, the KUV-26-50-0 first fires a large flare that will be immediately rejected by the missile’s seeker, followed by a small-calibre flare with a much lower IR signature. This smaller and ‘cooler’ flare could be then accepted by the missile’s seeker as a valid target because of the significant difference in the strength of the signals emitted by the two different flares, which are set to fully replicate the difference between the signals emitted by the small flare and the target itself.

Adron said this deception method could be also effective against two-colour seekers, working in both IR and UV spectrums, and featuring primary and secondary signal processing circuits in separate frequency bands. Deception of such seekers is becoming possible due to the use of large-calibre flares with an increased emissivity in the UV spectrum.

The ASh-01V, tested for the first time in 2016, is a new-generation IR emission suppressor device (exhaust-mixer box), installed onto the exhaust ducts of the TV3-117 turboshafts used to power both the Mi-8/17 and Mi-24/35 family of helicopters. It is being used to shield the hottest points of the helicopters in order to reduce the heat-seeking missile’s acquisition range. As Adron’s Alyoshin claimed, the main goals when designing the device included a good shielding capability as well as reducing to the minimum possible extent the consumed engine power. The new-generation IR suppressor reduces the engine’s output power by 2-3% compared with up to 13% of the original EVU IR suppressor boxes that have been used on the Mi-8/17 and Mi-24/35 since the mid-1980s. It is advertised as capable of reducing IR emissions eight to ten-fold compared with non-protected engine exhaust ducts, and the missile’s seeker acquisition range becomes about three times shorter.

The emission suppressor device is also made extendable and retractable – ie, the pilot can fly with retracted ASh-01V (to avoid loss in engine performance and drag increase) over no-threat areas, extending it in a working position only when entering threat-saturated zones.
