Sierra Hotel - get down to the AFCO and ask for a POC (Potential Officers' course) at Yeovilton or Culdrose. Four days, free, including your train ticket to/from home, and a real way to find out about the job and the Navy. Don't assume too much at this stage.

Hello, after having searched through the site to find the awnser to my question, i think i have found a post to awnser it however my case is slightly different.
As the majority of people applying for the RAF i am applying for pilot, but in my case a 6th form scholarship. I became increasingly worried about an inhaler i was prescribed after completing a number of forms for the scholarship so phoned my doctor. What this did confirm was that i had been prescribed an Inhaler in January last year , however this inhaler, and this is shown clearly in my records is nothing to do with asthma and this is clearly stated in my medical records, the doctor assured me of this and also told me that it was to open my airways for a small period of time while i was suffering with a chest infection. I was wondering if at any stage during my application this would crop up to haunt me in anyway. I repeat again i am not Asthmatic which is backed by my medical records.
Thanks for your time. James
ahh- Just to make it clear this was not a chest infection miss diagnosed as Asthma this was just purely a case of a chest infection as i have seen that if it was treated as asthma you will be firmly rejected on another post.

Frew,
Its an issue that crops up again and again on here as even pilots are human! But, asking questions on the internet really does not help/change your situation. - You will find your answers by searchign the forums either way.
The sad thing is, that it is a black and white issue (if you don't satisfy the tick box, you don't get in)
However, my advice to you would be to discuss this with your doctor and find a way of bringing it to the RAF's attention without jeopardising your application. It may not work, but if you are being truthfull and posess the determination, you should be willing to push your application.
Best of luck to you

Pilot Career help....
Hey Guys,
Im currently at Uni with the intention of join the RAF as a pilot - I have already found info on OASC etc, but have a question.
Will the RAF have a problem as I didn't join my Uni's UAS? (I applied first year to no avail and didn't the second, and I'm no longer eligible in the 3rd).
Are there many pilots with Degrees but no UAS service? I realise that I should have applied in 2nd year (with hindsight...!) but I do help at a CCF/ATC (I no it doesn't compare).
Cheers guys, any info is much appriciated.

They shouldn't have a problem with you not joining the UAS, but they will want to know why you didn't. As long as you have a good reason then it won't count against you. (Apart from missing out on the joys of UAS days)

just tell them why you didn't go I went to uni without going in the UAS, i just felt it wouldn't be a beneficial use of my time if i decided at any point during my education that the RAF wasn't for me.
I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
But even if you have a first class degree you still need that magic GCSE ticket too. No Maths or no English or not 5Cs and that is a NO.

Don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but these sites give a very basic explanation.

Pilots all commissioned. WSO-navigator types all commissioned. NCA WSOp-Crewman,EW,Acoustics,Linguist all non-com. If you have youth on your side go for pilot. But dont discount the others as you may get the chance to advance to Pilot while serving. AAC have non com pilots but only after a few years doing other stuff and only if you have the aptitude. Have a look at RAF Careers website. But do you resarch thoroughly before putting pen to paper. They expect you to know lots about the trades you thinking of doing before investing lots of cash to put you through.

'any hints and tips to maximise chances?'
Yes - attempt to make the massive effort to use capital letters when they are required. I know, society is to blame - or is it that you simply cannot be bothered because if it is the latter you progression through the application process will be very short lived.

I wonder if it's possible for a 'wanabe' thread to make it into double figures in posts before someone has a go at the questioner’s grammar, punctuation or spelling?
In the words of someone who had allegedly the 'right stuff' to get though IOT,
punctuation, punctuation, punctuation.

If you're commissioned you'll spend a lot of time trying to impress your boss. If you're non-commissioned you'll spend a lot of time rolling your eyes as soon as your boss leaves the room.
