Just received e-mail from David Cameron. He will be signing the EDM and is replying to all e-mails on subject. He has only just returned to work and is wading through a massive amount of material, but is keen to support this matter.

I haven't received an e-mail personally; however, this is the result I'd hoped for!!

Brian,

Thanks for that. Followed it up and find his tally is now 25, including 'Bear farms in China', and other world shattering causes concerning the constituents of Blaby.

I'll compose a suitably caustic response to his letter

I just returned from holiday to find still no response from Robert Walter MP. (following 1 x e mail and 2 x letters). He obviously doesn't care about winning back disaffected Tory voters.

I have now complained to IDS.

I have now received a courteous and comprehensive reply from David Cameron MP, together with a copy of Hansard dated 19 Mar 2002 giving the full transcript of the Opposition Day Debate.

He has reminded me that the Rt Hon David Davis, the Chairman of the Conservative Party, said that : the only honourable course for the Government now is to reinstate the reputations of the two brave young pilots who lost their lives. The Lords Select Committee report confirms the conclusion of two previous inquiries that there was a miscarriage of justice."

Mr Cameron went on to say "You have asked me to sign EDM829 but I have to say that, in my opinion, these EDMs have very limited impact. I think it ismuch more effective to make sure your concerns are brought directly to the Secretary of State for Defence and this I have done. I will contact you again when I have his response"

However, he concludes "On this occasion I have signed, because in a very specific case like this, the weight of numbers may help to force the Government's hand."

Thank you very much indeed, David Cameron MP, I'm sure that your efforts will be much appreciated by Brian and the campaigners.

Cowabunga! The EDM is now on 125, signed by Robert Walter (!), David Cameron, true to his word, and also Tory Chief Whip David Maclean. And Boris Johnson.

Someone once told me that when an EDM reaches 100 it is drawn to the attention of the Prime Minister, so if yer reading Tony, take note!

Following my earlier remarks about Robert Walter, I got home tonight to find a letter from him promising to sign the EDM. I now have to undo my complaint to IDS and think more highly of him. Doh!

This reply to my so called representative has probably burnt any remnants of a bridge left, but hell, it made me feel better:

Thank you for your letter of 25th June. I note your preference for the postal service over ‘Fax your MP’, so, on this occasion, I am using it.

I would find your dismissal of my request to sign EDM 829 easier to understand if you found the 1400 or so other ‘incredibly important issues “to be debated at an early day”’ equally unmeritorious of your attention.

From the 25 EDMs that have recently caught your imagination, I am disappointed to find that (among others) EDM 643 (That this House notes that the National Anthem is no longer broadcast on BBC 1 at the end of each day's programming before the transition to News 24; believes that the broadcasting of the National Anthem at the end of BBC 1's programming is a proud tradition that should be restored; and calls on the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to do everything she can to encourage the BBC to reinstate this convention at the earliest opportunity) is more worthy of your signature than an attempt to ensure governmental fair play with the reputations of two of its former servants.

125 names, from 100 just a couple of weeks ago - what a fantastic effort by all of you, and a testament to the power of PPRuNe! This represents almost 25% of all MP's. The EDM is still open, so hopefully it will creep even higher.

Well done and thank you to every one whose perseverence has got us this far. Brian is away at the moment, but I'm sure he will echo my sentiments when he returns.

PS Arkroyal - loved your response, hell, it made me feel better too

Actually it is a bit better than that cos around 100 MPs don't count as they are on the "pay roll" and can't sign EDMs.

Add one more MP to the list! Quote:

'...although I do not normally sign EDM, as I do not feel they are a particularly effective way of drawing Ministers' attention to individual issues, I have signed EDM829.....'

Normally returning home from a short holiday is a bit of a comedown. However after reading PPRuNe I am absolutely delighted at all that has been going on.

Well done to you all, and a big thank you for all your hard work.

About three weeks until the end of the six month 'consultation' period for the Government and MoD. If the (predictable) response is that the verdict will stand because the Lords Select Committee offered nothing new in the way of evidence, might I respectfuly suggest that you have a letter ready to send to your MP reminding them that the remit of the Committee was to consider the justification for the findings of those reviewing the conclusions of the RAF Board of Inquiry that both pilots of the Chinook helicopter ZD576 which crashed on the Mull of Kintyre on 2 June 1994 were negligent

They were not looking for any new evidence. They were investigating whether or not the RAF's own rules had been broken and whether the reviewing officers had been lawful in their conclusion. As we all know the unanimous verdict of their Lordships was ... the reviewing officers were not justified in finding that negligence on the part of the pilots caused the aircraft to crash .

Be ready for the play on words and then let your MP know how the Government and MoD are trying to decieve the country.

Great work everyone.
My best, as always
Brian

Mark Oaten

Chippy63; re your post of 22 Jun, have you found out whether or not Mark Oaten has signed?

I don't know how to check otherwise I'd do it myself.

If he hasn't, I can call/write/e-mail his office.

I can confirm that Mr Oaten has signed the EDM.

Thanks again to those who made it possible.

fobotcso, brian.
He did indeed sign, and sent a nice email as well.
Let's hope a few more sign up.

PS, fobotsco, it wouldn't harm to email him to thank him for signing- the more these folk realise how broad and deep the convictions are in this case, the better!
