I say good riddance to another PoS from BWoS. Let's face it, it was going to be unsafe botch job and I really hope that the way the MRA4 Project was (mis)managed comes under serious scrutiny.

I hope that the Govt's decision has saved the lives of some of our aircrew and that a sensible alternative is found in the near future; maybe the best thing to come from the MRA4 will be the kit from inside that is now residing in the P-8 MMA?

Here's hoping, eh? Maybe a reprieve for KIS in a couple of years time?

Nimrod AEW and Nimrod MRA4 - hopefully, we will learn 3rd time around!

Where are they going to post us all. With Wittering , Lyneham and Cottesmore also up for chop and 1 of 3 other bases to close.

Redundencies was metioned but I fear it will be the Aircrew who get this option only.
We are expected into work tommorow at 8am to be smiley and happy for the big fighter cheese to come up and say exactley what was told to us today. I heard Wittering got 2 days standdown to spend with families and discuss there future yet all of us at ISK are expected to listen to the whatever AOC it is this time. Nobody cares for people like this at this time, again bad policy from command yet again.

The writing has been on the wall for a very long time and with current issues there was no way this was not firmly in the targets for SDSR. The fall out is bad and should never have been allowed to get to this stage, poor management, bad decisions from day one have never previously been addressed meaning those in power arrived at a cliff edge and the options were pretty limited.

RumPunch,

I do hope it's not the same chap who told us he'd resign if we were down banded.

Heart felt sympathies to the guys and gals at ISK, loyalty is a one way street these days.

BBC Linky

According to the above link (and I know it's Peston), the aircraft will be taken delivery of, and potentially stored.

If that's the case, I wonder if there's an element of "be seen to make the cuts from a financial standpoint", only for some of the more controversial elements to be back-peddled later.

Same for the F-35C. I wonder if Mr MOD has been to see my neighbors down the road in Marietta yet, asking if we can even have the F35C? How much ka-ka are we in after binning F-35B?

It may yet be that the approach is made to Lockheed, and they say "sod off. F-35B or nothing". In which case, Mr MOD may catch a flight to Chicago to enquire if the Super Hornets were still available, thus saving a boatload of cash.

Yeah Siggie I think the words were I would bet on my own mortgage that MRA4 will survive, how wrong I was . My mortgage today now equates to negative equity so its worthless anyway.
Luckily there is a plentifull supply of drink to ease that pain.
Just going through that betrayal, lies and backstabbing by politicians that everyone now says I told you so.

Today with a few years to go I just can`t seem to find the will to ever be an effective member of the RAF again. This was the only thing that I cared for but its gone.

Wittering Closing?

Rum Punch,

You allude to Wittering closing but I can only see info on loss of Harrier fleet. Is this true, as the A4 hub will still remain, no?

Twon

P.S. Are we going to buy the P8 - Posideon in a few years perhaps; the Indians can afford 12 of them but is that with our aid money!!!

Aha, a subtle difference!

TSR2 had its jigs destroyed immediately so the decision was practically irreversible as soon as the decision was made.

This time, the Comet jigs were destroyed decades ago!

Twon, I offer apoligies , all the chat of Wittering along with Lossiemouth , Leeming and Marham.

With Harrier going I just assumed it would close but plenty still to offer the Military.

Nimrod - It had jigs? I thought each one was built on bespoke wooden jigs - ie. each one different?

While the loss of the MRA4 is a travisty and will result in a massive capability gap for UK security as a whole it must be noted that the Air Force made absolutely no case for retaining the aircraft. Not a single person in the RAF fought for the Nimrod....interesting...hope the might Eurofighter 2000 crews are looking forward to doing surface search.

I know that the CINC, AOC and other Senior Officers did for many months, so I don't know where you got your info from? I also understand that CAS was battling this one until late last week.

Gryphon , according to our senior echolons it was totally the opposite. It was fought at from all corners, but on the same note I am stupid for thinking we were ever going to be told the truth.

Having spent my last years of service at Kinloss and with Nimrod, my thoughts go out to all still there whose best efforts and hard work to introduce the MRA4 and their futures and dreams have today gone up in smoke.

It has not been mentioned in the media but again BAES has a lot to answer for. Not only has its greed in the development process delayed and escalated the wasted spend to date, it was its unjustifiable and unaffordable support costs to keep the aircraft operating in the years to come that I believe was the final nail in the coffin.

As far as Wittering is concerned, I always understood that the land would require zillions to clean up for before it could be handed over.

Least a sense of humour remains

NIMROD MRA4 on eBay (end time 29-Oct-10 21:00:23 BST)

This is what makes the military stand out to anybody else.

Thanks for the humour when needed

On the downside, lots of hardworking, innocent people will be getting their redundancy notices in the North West tomorrow..

That eBay listing is funny

However, some RAF front line fighter aircraft survived the defence cuts and intercepted an aircraft over Hampshire:
