I despair - I'm not a carrier fan but if we're going to have them surely we can afford a few more CIWS? The carriers cost billions
Carry on despairing. At some point you'll realise your SA on anything to do with maritime is not what it should be.

The CIWS thing isn't great, but frankly fixable if there was less pressure on time

Don't forget, this is speculation. QNLZ was due to go to Rosyth for refit anyway. The issue with the shaft coupling is a question of risk appetite and might actually be sorted by a material / structural study. Still, frigates and destroyers eh?

No. There is a material issue with the shaft coupling. That doesn't mean it's about to fail. What it means is that some investigation is required to determine the rate of deterioration to see whether that might be an issue. Or not.

In the meantime, say the ship deploys on Steadfast Defender and then "might" need to go somewhere warmer for a longer period, there's a risk choice to make. Swap the ships now and guarantee you could support that extended period, or gamble that the deterioration investigation answer is " nothing to see here".

NAB,

Excuse me if I sound critical but if it has to be investigated....certainly it is an issue or it would not require investigation.

Perhaps assessing how severe or critical an issue it is might be more appropriate.

This is more grist to the “Why we need more than two carriers” argument. Probably need at least 5 to have any chance of one sailing.

And yes, I am aware of the irony in criticising these floating gin palaces, given my nom de plume.

these carriers, the RN and the MoD, really do look a bit silly now. How much have we paid for these?

Never mind what we paid for them. Can we sell them for enough to fund a squadron of F35a’s and six Tankers?

Ah yes, I can just see tucked away in the Sale 'Terms & Conditions' - "Buyer responsible for removing from UK waters, tugs not provided."

Be fair! At least the 2 white elephants enabled us to say we contributed the magic 2% to Defence. The fact that they don't work and can't seemingly be 'manned' is irrelevant, apparently.

Is this a resigning issue for 1SL?

I doubt it. The honourable tradition of "the buck stops here" went overboard years ago ............ the VVSOs just join the queue to put their snouts in the House of Lords trough. Not only the Royal Navy, as the RAF knows to its cost.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-68268560A Royal Navy aircraft carrier has failed to set sail for a Nato exercise, a week after its sister ship pulled out because of a mechanical fault.

HMS Prince of Wales was due to replace HMS Queen Elizabeth in Exercise Steadfast Defender - the largest Nato exercise since the Cold War.

However, the £3bn warship has remained in Portsmouth and the harbour mouth has been reopened to normal marine traffic.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the departure had been "postponed".

Hundreds of people lined Portsmouth Harbour to watch the carrier's scheduled departure at 12:15 GMT.

However, after MoD police boats secured the area and the harbour mouth was closed, the channel was reopened and the crowd dispersed.

The generation of carrier strike has never been seen as a priority by the RAF...

Seems like it's very far down the priority list for the Andrew too...
