no they did not. They created a random software with things like salary, calling in sick, years served and then blasted redundancy emails. Inside corporate they asked the filthy grade 10 management to pick 30% of each of their departments to remove staff. Mind you many of these frivolous decisions were made back in April and May.....

Not many western companies now use pure LIFO as it can easily be classed as age discriminatory. They now tend to use other factors along with LIFO such as sickness, training, amount of cover etc.

.... and by that you're saying that i.e. a factor sickness is not discriminatory?
Nothing is fair or non-discriminatory with such kind of dismissals. I simply wanted to point out, that however you proceed, you will anger some groups that invoke discrimination, injustice or else. It is a lose-lose situation, best worked out via the applicable contract. EK has no contract worth such a name and they simply outsourced the responsibility for picking the victims and that is what is so shameful, not the dismissals as such.

I wonder how the impending furlough at United will turn out. I guess the only way to circumvent any discrimination lawsuits will be acting according contract and this might well be LIFO.

That’s why good companies sized EK have a seniority list - and therefore LIFO
it recognizes also the years of service and therefore the achievements throu your career and the complication to find a job in this field after many years of dedication towards a company - it demonstrates loyalty
if you hire at a company with seniority you know where u stand - it means security

The number of pilots made redundant who had clean records but had had surgery, a life threatening illness ie cancer, or if female were pregnant is too great for it to have been mere coincidence.

And even the individual had a warning - as the issue is not followed by the authority it could count as discrimination
I found a video where EK presents it self as on punishment company - and we all know how easy they where giving them away - is not as the individual has payed somehow it price already - and therefore it would be a double pay
so all what this company did shows disloyalty and disrespect of its finest
I know a guy receiving a warning for not passing the upgrade - we’ll fired too today
this all is just BS

It seems that LIFO agreements nowadays are only as good as the strength of the union behind the negotiations. Friends in some legacy airlines in Europe have seen historic LIFO agreements morph into various hybrid versions of LIFO, where the airline has insisted some weighting is given towards the ‘performance’ of the employee. At least there is total transparency as to how people are selected.

Should EK feel that pilot numbers need to be trimmed further, I have a feeling that the company will avoid making anymore pilots redundant, so that any leaks to the press can be prevented. Instead, periods of prolonged periods of unpaid leave will be distributed, knowing the resignations will happen sooner or later. It would amount to constrictive dismissal in the developed world.

I personally am surprised the company has not closed down the provident fund scheme and allowed us to cash in, minus the current value of our EOSB. It would save the company upwards of 20 million USD in company contributions alone each year (based on my fag packet maths), plus it delivers very little if any benefit to the Dubai economy. The cynic within me thinks the company is willing to overlook this cost saving, since releasing this capital would enable a number to sustain themselves, should we start seeing lengthy periods of unpaid leave.

The majority of airline pilots in the world are at American airlines and are in unions. I'm not aware of an exception to LIFO based on seniority. Seniority is traditionally based on date of hire but after numerous mergers the hire dates are somewhat jumbled and 'adjusted'.

They tried to do that with the new ‘old’ freighter contract but didn’t wash

This is not dissimilar to the Utilities Allowance.
Lots of predictions that all were going to have to move into company accommodation.
There are far too many managers, senior mangers, VP's, SVP's, DSVP's etc, who made sure that didn't go.

Same with the Provident Fund. Ain't going nowhere.
It's not just pilots who would be affected.

That could all change with the stroke of a pen . When there was a serious pilot shortage retirement age went from 60-65 in 2007 ,retirement benefits were grandfathered. I can see " new hires" on much reduced T & Cs.

That is exactly the reason why they got rid of so many people so early and fast - to change the TnC for the next Generation of meat
and to make room for the local cadets, otherwise they would not have a chance to get a job for next 3-5 years

And one month of the year when the flying schedule will be totally on hold.....

And doesn't if feel good that experienced pilots with thousands of SAFE flying hours are let go to make way for cadet guys/girls who haven’t even got as far as twins, and cant even spell IR yet.
