Question EK DEC Interview

Hello,

I have been offered an interview with EK for a DEC position, a/c type to be determined.
I have read alot of the postings on PPRuNe regarding EK, and I apologise now for 'rehashing' an old subject.
I presently work for a good UK airline as a 757/767 Captain and enjoy the company and the flying.
Im married with two young kids.

I like the look of the 777, I enjoy warm temperatures, and like the 'idea' of working for a large 'legacy' scheduled carrier. The 'idea' of taking home more money is a bonus.

I dont like roster changes, or being unfairly worked hard.

I would like to hear from any EK DEC's, EK Pilots past and present or even anyone in my position thinking about taking a job with EK as an DEC.

Best wishes and safe happy flying.

you should join, it's the best airline in the world as you read in all the other postings.
the lifestyle is fantastic, the money is great, the managers look after you, you don't work hard at all and the best is the pension plan, so much better than the UK pension system.

ZOMP, are you mad, either you are not on the same planet or you left about 5 years ago or finally ek has sent you round the bend.

For the initial poster, i would stay where you are. You WILL do 90-100 hrs every month no matter which fleet they put you on, struggle to get any leave and be so f##ked you will not be up for much on your 8-9 days off a month.

forgot to add that every FO will get a quck command in less than a year and we will get a payrise of at least 50% because EK is so proud of us.

in the many rivers of dubai also flows honey instead of water, the doves in the air are already fried you just have to take a bite and on every flight there are at least 15 virgins on board to fullfill all your dreams.

don't believe these western non believers who talk bad about EK!

[Hey Zomp, can I play too?]
As a DEC, you'll be welcomed with open and enthusiastic arms by all. Even after 10, 000 hours and 3 years at EK, one can always learn more and the F/Os are all thrilled to have newbie Captains to teach us.

It shows what a great Flight Ops department EK has by being so kind as to recruit Captains to help us. I look forward to another 5 years of learning in the right seat. You too can expect to be treated with the same great benevolent kindness from our masters.

As well, you'll find morale at an all time high. We love to work and just can't get enough. Damn Flight Time Duty Limitations. Fortunately, Flight Ops helps here too and finds ways around the laws.

On the layovers, all the crews always come out for a good time. Really, it’s more like family than a company. Can’t you just feel the love?

so you like the look of the B777 and warm temperatures. Well I have heard it all now as a reason to leave everything behind and inflict your family to an expat life.

Do not be put off joining EK or any other airline as a DEC as that is the only way remotely worth considering. However the days of leaving a UK Charter Airline such as yours and coming to the Gulf are well and truly over IMHO. It is just not worth it anymore. Forget the big shiny jet. A night flight to Dhaka and the Indian sub continent is just as bad as the Greek and Canary Islands, take my word on that.It is only worth joining if you are coming to the end of your flying career and want a change for the last 5 years and if you are financially secure. Stay at home if I were you.

I am not in EK but have worked in the Gulf when it was worth it and even the Far East is just the same. Big shiny jets and warm temperatures and that is just about all to it.

May I direct you and anyone else thinking of joining, especially those DEC's amongst you, to the ' EK or not EK, that is the problem' forum. Some good recent posts from those that know!
I doubt you'll receive much direct advise here. The DEC debate is a hot subject right now.
Regards
Harry

you should read all the posts and make a sound judgement based on not what the peolpe tell you on this forum but when you go out to dubai. Only then will you realise that this forum is indeed a good representation of what is happening out there.

also if you had read the posts before asking your question you will have realised that zomp was being sarcastic and things indeed are not good at ek.

when you go for i/v you will see all the gloss there including the accomodation. a mate of mine was offered dec contract but salary was lower then that advised to him at interview (not very professional ek). If they are pissing about with the initial contract what will they do when you arrive in the UAE one begs the question.

Personally i think its a waste of time and also money (about £400 - £500 ticket fare to go from the uk to dubai) just to find out that the negative comments on pprune turned out true. but its your money and time and it will cost you even more if you are taking the wife to show her dubai.

finally if you have a LHS job in the uk with a charter company, please go to dubai so i can have it - just kidding! you dont know how lucky you are.

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for the replies. Dont worry, I also appreciated Zomps kind of humour!

As far as the DEC debate goes, when I first started with my present employer they hired a handful of DEC's, and even as a new F/O I wasnt very happy about it. I hope all the EK F/O's truly ready for a command find themselves in the left seat soon.

I will keep my eye on the threads and hope to see more replies. Im a little undecided right now, which may be an answer in itself. If anyone ever needs an unbiased heads-up on the UK scene just send me a PM.

Best wishes

OK guys I am serious now, I also did charter in the UK and europe, left hand seat widebody and I gave up my job because I thought EK is better.
The money was better 7 years ago but there was no spirit and no fun at all involved, today even the money is bad.
I was first time exposed to a very unfriendly system of checking rather than training (the FOM got it wrong it says rather training than checking) and a reporting culture, in if anybody can screw you up in EK he will ( stafftravel etc).
If I would come again? the answer is NO f*****g way.

Read the last threads as advised and then add to that you will be as welcome as a hole in the head.

Aileron you really must have a screw loose if you are thinking of giving up a 75/76 command in the uk to join EK
DEC's are not wanted or needed in EK you will not be made welcome by the people you fly with who are being shafted by guys like you.
This may seem harsh but its is the reality i'm afraid.

Its ek that are shafting you pal, not the DECs. Its been hashed to death.Unfortunate choices made bease on the word of assholes, not the fault of guys who had nothing to do with your circumstance. its the way things are going now. Send me a message when you leave ek and only apply as an f/o somewhere...I doubt it.

Pintofstella,

Maaate...you've had too many, can't spot a wind up anymore. Must be all those dodgy flights you have been trying to get rid of this month!
