Jumpjim - great to see someone who's been through it all on here giving advice and a view on what it's really like to be in the job.

Re your point about getting in as soon as you can - my apologies, I wasn't being as clear as I had thought in previous posts. My point regarding getting grades before applying was specifically aimed at
...for those worrying about being too young or not having sufficient grades...
Ie if you don't meet the criteria currently (like Davy07) then, whilst you won't be eligible now you shouldn't necessarily give up all hope for the future.

The requirements on grades etc appear clear cut

Does anyone have any idea when it's going to actually open for applications?

It's interesting the amount of users on here who don't meet the education standards. One can see straight away how many people could be weened out at stage one.

Good article here on Royal Aeronautical Society site on this 'golden handcuffs' job scheme.

Pilots wanted

Also some useful resources at the end for those wanting to get an edge on other candidates - it seems to have attracted a lot of excitement!

Stick at it and as for catfoodtastesbad comment regarding more relevant education and more maturity than a cabin crew member or baggage handler. Well there's a CRM exercise if I've ever seen one!

It took me 3 attempts to get into BA and although I'm still awaiting a course date it is possible regardless of background and education. As stated the bar is set high to minimize the applications but is no way a reflection of a guarantee to pass the theoretical or practical parts of the course. It just lessens the risk as you are deemed to have the ability to process large quantities information quicker and easier.

For the record I was cabin crew for just over 3yrs, have no degree, but have 3 active job offers and just turned down command to move to BA. Anything is possible! Sometimes we take different routes to get there but along that route we gain a different type of education and maturity worth equal to, if not more than 4 years at uni!

Could I ask as to why you decided to turn down the command position at BA?

BA have said you have to be 18 by the 1st of Feb 2012 to apply, yet they've said this scheme will be running until 2016?

I'm not 18 until July 2013, so is there no chance of me being able to apply then even though the course will still be open?

I'm so gutted age gets in the way of everything, just hoping other airlines follow suit for when I'm old enough

Hi all,

This is good news no doubt.

My situation is this. Have 10 GCSE's 2 A's 7 B's 2 C's - A in Electronics, B Maths, BB Science etc but i got a C in English Language.

Also went and did A-Levels. - B ICT, C - LAW , D- Business Studies. From what I can remember

Have a current JAR-PPL recently attained - 53 Hours.

Have been empoyed as an IT engineer for 7 years with the same company.

Should I still apply and hope my experience and maturity has helped towards an application especially working as an IT engineer.

I am also now thinking of doing an Open university degree over 3 years to help with my dream / future anyway. BSC ICT and Computing degreee?

Rephrased that sentence by adding a "to" so should make sense now! Guess that'll be the educational requirement.

But to answer the question, longevity and variation. Not many airlines have long, medium and short haul fleets. Essentially if one isnt working for some reason you can bid to move yet stay in the same company.

David,

Looks to me like you do not meet the basic educational requirements, I would focus on achieving this first.

Kempus, I did not mean to undermine the work and skills of cabin crew, but I was saying that a job in the City may have given you a broader range of skills and examples to talk about.

You will be able to apply. When they say they are running it until 2016, I've interpreted this as they will do several rounds of recruitment. I'm 18 in May 2012 so miss the age cutoff for now, next year I imagine the age cutoff will be 1 year later so 1st Feb 2013. I doubt they will recruit now for people to start courses in 2016! I think that's what it means anyway... hopefully someone can clarify

BA is a wonderful place to work, the job is fantastic, well paid, and hugely enjoyable and I regularly thank my lucky stars that I go to work and get paid for doing a job that I genuinely enjoy.
I wish there were more airlines out there where the very same words can be said about them

Hope some dates and details come out soon, I complete my degree in July, doubt the first batch will start then though From the age requirements on the website it looks to start in February, intakes every six months would be good though, I could start in August if I got it

I really hope so! It'd be such a shame just to cut it off like that when there are so many enthusiastic and ambitious people (like ourselves ) that would give a kidney to do this!

I certainly hope so, or at least another airline follows suit. Preferably Virgin

Hmm... I appear to have touched a nerve when comparing
jobs! If you can get good experience to answer questions such as "give me an example of a complex problem you had to solve with many stakeholders... bla bla bla" from CC work then fantastic. Working as CC would also help to demonstrate passion for the industry, and the customer service side of it.

I wonder how many RAF de-selectees will be going for this, I would imagine they would have an upper hand over most.

I would imagine a fair few will be going for it but one thing you need to remember about them is that a some of them will have had little or no interest in commercial aviation and are only going to apply because that's seemingly the only path left for them. I'm sure lots of ex-armed forces pilots would love to fly commercially but maybe some won't have quite the same passion for the job as they did have for their military careers. Just a thought, although they are not being recruited by the same means as little or no experience pilots anyway.

Not heard much yet about how many "non interest free loans" there will be?

As a business cashflow is king....if they issue 100 thats £8,400,000 tied up.......suspect the loans will be the exception rather than the rule.

Unfortunately I can't stump up £84,000?

.

All you can do is apply and do your best. Chances are you won't make it anyway (nothing personal, just statistically speaking!). If you do then start worrying about such things. I'm sure BA have made provisions for it. They must be aware that most won't have securities of that value to their names.

BA future pilot / Cathay Pacific cadet scheme comparison

Hi folks,

a few years ago I applied to the Cathay pacific scheme, getting through the first round of interviews. I decided ( stupidly as some may see it) that hong kong was not for me, and hence didn't persue it. I wonder how this scheme will compair to the cp scheme, particularly interms of required calibre and interview difficulty? Any thoughts guys? I think compition may be greater, as cp didn't particularly advertise it well.
