I stab at Liege

Auxtank 22nd Mar 2020 19:44

No no no Bear - South...
jensdad had it with France...

My flight planning software says 160° - (see Airbus A320 ND above) or thereabouts...from Lerwick.

Good hunting Bear.

Colmar has some hills in the background.
But seems to be to far away?

Auxtank 22nd Mar 2020 21:02

They are - as you say - too far away.
But your compass might need a dip - round to the right a bit.

Asturias56 23rd Mar 2020 09:04

S France - Pyrenees???

Auxtank 23rd Mar 2020 09:24

Right country - wrong mountains Asters,

If you're down there see if you can tune to the Toulouse VOR (TOU 117.70) - go TO then fly the O/Bound Rad of about 50ēM. You'll lose the VOR at 130NM or so but you'll need to keep flying a fair bit after that until you get there.

Not many navigations skills in evidence here.

Auxtank has told you where it is and how to get there !

It is not so much the skills as the hardware available.
I like this way of clues but I
have no (free) app for air navigation on my phone.
anything you can recommend?

dook 23rd Mar 2020 14:36

Yes - Google Earth.

Make sure you set the distance measuring scale to nautical miles.

I'm sure you have that, but there's one simple thing to do before it. :)

Flap40 23rd Mar 2020 14:56

I think it might be Bellegarde - Vouvray.

Bravo Flap40. It is indeed Bellegarde-Vouvray Airport; ICAO: LFHN; IATA: Type: Small Airport.

You win the prize...

- though note This Vouvray is not THE Vouvray - Loire Valley, where said celebrated wines come from.

Bear - a good free air nav map is Skyvector https://skyvector.com
SkyDemon is very good but you need a subscription.

Flap40 you have control.

Google earth
A right I used Google maps up to now .
GE gives distance but not heading?

dook 23rd Mar 2020 15:36

GE gives bearing and distance. Bearing is degrees true.

Flap40 23rd Mar 2020 15:44

Ta. Open house.

So,the DME was to LTP then....?

The A320 ND was solely to give a HDG clue from Lerwick - with instructions to Ignore DME.
Though you're correct in that LTP is indeed on that course.

By that token if you'd followed the nav clue I gave Asturas56 From VOR TOU outbound 50ēM you would have flown slightly N of LTP and closer to VOR LSE at Lyon.

If I do another - Navigate to the aerodrome - challenge I shall ensure that all given nav clues fit together and can be cross-referenced.
It was coincedence that the bearing did in this case - so well spotted.

OH has been called by winner Flap40

nvubu 23rd Mar 2020 18:10

I, for one, have no idea what any of that means - apart from the OH.

Asturias56 23rd Mar 2020 18:14

I follow the railways..............
