Is that a lake or sea at the top, beyond the runway....?////

ea200 14th Nov 2019 19:21

That's the sea.

creweite 14th Nov 2019 20:01

Near Stanstead but not Europe?

ea200 14th Nov 2019 20:05

Hi Creweite. If you mean Stansted (EGSS) then I never said it was near there (although I am at present). It's very close to Europe but about 3.5 hours from Stansted as a 73 flies.
Not to suggest that anyone does fly there from Stansted.

I may have misled earlier by saying that it isn't in the MIddle East. I don't consider it as such but technically it is. Whoops!

These guys were practicing here in April for an anniversary display.

Asturias56 15th Nov 2019 09:18

Someone posted an answer - somewhere in Turkey - but it seems to have disappeared.

ea200 15th Nov 2019 09:36

Well, however it was got Turkey correct. If the vanishing poster cares to re-post they will get it if they have the correct location. If not anyone else care to post? That's the Turkish Stars by the way. Thanks for the info Asturias56.

Asturias56 15th Nov 2019 11:34

It wasn't someone I recognised as a regular on here - they gave an answer and declared OH

I haven't the time to check out Turkey inch by inch today - its a bigger place than I thought!

nvubu 15th Nov 2019 12:23

They posted Canakkale Turkey

Asturias56 15th Nov 2019 12:52

Could be - the basic layout with the turning areas at the runway threshold is pretty common in Turkey but the overhead posted in the challenge looks as if it's pretty old - there's a great big terminal area on the NW side of the runway now according to GE. Street View imagery is 2014 and doesn't show the terminal but the vertical 2019 shot shows a hexagonal shape similar to the challenge. Google just shows a grotty old tower but the attached link shows the new tower

https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en...oiowCnoECA8QBg

ea200 15th Nov 2019 13:58

It is Canakkale. The whole airport was redeveloped around 2014 including a re-laid runway and the new terrminal. The overhead I posted dates from around that time.
OH it is.

Asturias56 15th Nov 2019 15:55

Here's one I must have passed a dozen times before realising it was there

UV 16th Nov 2019 13:07

Asturias56 16th Nov 2019 15:31

Yes - it is in the Uk

Yes it is near a main road

No it is not the M25 or near Amersham

Duchess_Driver 16th Nov 2019 18:24

EMH, Costock?

Disregard.

Asturias56 16th Nov 2019 20:50

Not Costock but closer than the M25

How about Denham?

Asturias56 17th Nov 2019 06:40

No - you are too London-centric.................

Never sure if this place is busy or not but it seems to have been there a while

Allan Lupton 17th Nov 2019 08:09

Probably not Popham, but who knows?

mustbeaboeing 17th Nov 2019 08:15

Nottingham (Heliport)
Open House if correct

Asturias56 17th Nov 2019 08:25

Yes - although its a few miles south of the City just off the A46 - I must have passed it dozens of times over the years - OH it is

India Four Two 18th Nov 2019 05:32

Was someone having a laugh when they chose a field 15 miles from the city centre and named it Nottingham Heliport?

Asturias56 18th Nov 2019 07:54

To be fair it's only about 15 minutes out from the centre - and the well heeled all live on that side of town as well

have you seen London Stansted or London Oxford...................... they're well over 50 miles out

IIRC the old Spitting Image TV show had Ryanair advertising "London Mt Pleasant -easier to get to than Stansted, less delays that Heathrow"

dixi188 18th Nov 2019 08:13

Then there was the re-naming of East Midlands to Nottingham East Midlands about 20 years ago.
Caused some confusion with UPS crews looking at Tollerton.
Also, the the nearest city is Derby and it's in Leicestershire.

Asturias56 18th Nov 2019 08:39

Middlesborough/Teeside/Durham............... and wasn't EM going to be Robin Hood?

You mean Finningley?
And whatever happened to St Mawgan?

dixi188 18th Nov 2019 12:43

Not forgetting "London Hurn" just after the WW2. Over 100 miles from London.

Anyone got a picture to post?

Flap40 18th Nov 2019 17:57

I think I count as an irregular regular so here is a BOGOF deal for you.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....18d02e6dd0.jpg

Flap40 19th Nov 2019 12:34

I guess we need a clue. Eastern Med.

ea200 19th Nov 2019 12:41

Hi Flap. You beat me to it with that one, it was next on my list. However, I will leave it to others to find it.

dash7fan 19th Nov 2019 20:02

May be Cigli Air Base near Izmir Turkey?

Flap40 19th Nov 2019 20:27

The one furthest away is Cigli airbase. Google earth has the nearer one as Cigli Military Airport.

dash7fan is in charge.

Asturias56 20th Nov 2019 08:13

AGGGHHHH _ I saw that one when I was looking all over Turkey a few days ago for Canakkale - it was so odd I'd filed it for a future challenge.

But I was on the road yesterday and, once again, fame and fortune passed me by.......... :ouch:

PS any reason they didn't put a small taxi strip connecting the two airstrips? They could use it as a road for day to day use.

dash7fan 20th Nov 2019 16:57

Thanks and sorry for delay

This was originally based in Lubeck Blankensee.
But that might be too easy?

Self loading bear 20th Nov 2019 21:26

You have posted this challenge earlier.
You might have something other available?

dash7fan 21st Nov 2019 07:34

Oh sorry, not at the moment. So OH please. By the way, München Riem is the Airport. D-CACE, ex VZ302, later G-BCOV
