You are correct - mainly Finnish speaking but a large proportion of Swedish speakers...... first time I went to Finland I'd never realised I spoke Swedish - but compared to Finnish..... all signs are in both languages and you can at least make an educated guess at looking at the Swedish....................

But not Oulu.................

I have found your uncropped image.

The caption says it's Vaasa early 1960s.

...A56,,WAIT..WHY..?how many fingers have you? the game is over after 24 hours....from first post....!

Asturias56 11th Jan 2020 16:44

Sorry - I've got enough problems with the mods that I'm super sensitive - I really can't afford another transgression................

Senior Pilot said (What Cockpit post # 1350 07/01/20) "Quite simply, you can post and discuss to your heart's content from the moment a challenge appears, but the declaration of a winner will not occur until 24 hours has elapsed. This applies to all three competition threads: a reference Wiki also covers the airfield thread.I would emphasise that all threads should respect that this is the Aviation History & Nostalgia forum with an expectation of historic images and/or subjects please."

Personally I think it would be best if you could only post once a day - which would allow the inclusivness they want but until then..................

So 24 hours has now passed - it is Vaasa and Dook has the con..................

Thank you 56.

I still have a flying machine challenge running so therefore OH.

asw28-866 12th Jan 2020 00:14

Standby day, here is an easy one to keep things rolling along...

John Eacott 12th Jan 2020 02:11

asw28-866 I’d say Longreach would fit the bill?

But it does look a fairly recent photo :hmm:

asw28-866 12th Jan 2020 02:17

YLRE Longreach it is, photo recent, however location surely befits 'history-nostalgia'? I'm not old enough to have taken a historic picture! John E. has control.

Well, honoured as I am at my first attempt harrumph, I quietly admit to actually driving plank wing into Longreach. Once.

Here's an historic airport from a different aspect: none of this running up and down runways to get airborne stuff :p

Haven't a clue 13th Jan 2020 05:52

Looks a bit like Lion Rock in the background. Kai Tak? But the perspective seems wrong.

sycamore 13th Jan 2020 10:12

Could be an old Mk1,so you might have needed a bit of runway if it was hot/heavy....!!

(but then,you probably weren`t allowed ashore with 4 x MK 46s)...

Old?!! I’ll have you know they were virtually brand new at the time ;) Mk46s didn’t come along for another year or two; I did the jettison trials which is another story in itself

Somewhere Far East north of Australia?

Yes to both :ok:

dook 13th Jan 2020 11:52

I feel it might therefore be a Royal Australian Navy Sea King but can't find that emblem.

Are we in Indonesia ?

No to Indo, and it’s a Sea King HAS1 of the mighty 826 Vertical Pursuit Squadron swanning around on HMS Eagle. Definitely not RAN, I did my time back in the Real Navy about when you were paid by the Light Blue :ok:

dook 13th Jan 2020 19:46

Having found a map of Eagle's last deployment with 826 I think we may be close to Singapore.

SMOKEON 13th Jan 2020 19:58

Sek Kong, New Territories, Hong Kong?

Self loading bear 13th Jan 2020 20:01

Singapore and Hongkong might be too obvious.

The hill profile is at RAF Kai Tak.

It is indeed, RAF Kai Tak where I went to pick up some stragglers when Eagle left for the last time on 27th October 1971. Honkers was a very different place then, and we had a fairly free rein flying around doing various jobs such as lifting equipment to a remote island for the RE to build a water purification plant for the village, same for a lighthouse on the edge of the New Territories with a Chinese gunboat tracking us with the AA to ensure we stayed on our side, landing on the Blue Star ferry pier, etc.

Line ball between Haven't a clue as first in, refined by dook with the actual strip. I hereby nominate dook to carry the torch to the next location :ok:

ps this was the return to Eagle from HK, and a flypast for the Governor where we had half a dozen Sea Kings: 100% serviceability wasn't unusual!

Thank you JE - a great challenge.

I feel I should offer this to Haven't a clue. If he is unable to take the baton then I will call OH to give the "international" players an opportunity.

Haven't a clue 14th Jan 2020 18:39

Thanks dook; my apologies to all for being tardy in responding but I have been in a car, departure lounge, an aeroplane, several trains and (sorry) a restaurant.

I'm in the air again tomorrow (I'll be close to Kai Tak for the next week), so regrettably it has to be OH.

dook 14th Jan 2020 18:42

Mind the girly bars then...….

nvubu 15th Jan 2020 19:21

As we are on an Open House and I'm currently going through the 2019 posts updating the Aerodrome list, I thought I'd set this challenge.

From the Seebee’s book you have?

nvubu 16th Jan 2020 06:53

Certainly is the Seebees. You now just gave to discover where it is.

I was going to start with these two images

dook 16th Jan 2020 08:23

Suspect the Admiralties - somewhere like Pityilu maybe.

nvubu 16th Jan 2020 11:47

I had to look up the Admiralty Islands, and I can confirm that this airfield isn't there.

dook 16th Jan 2020 12:56

Marianas any closer ?

nvubu 16th Jan 2020 13:05

Yes the Marianas are closer.

dook 16th Jan 2020 14:29

Palmyra atoll ?

Asturias56 16th Jan 2020 14:30

Palau perhaps?

nvubu 16th Jan 2020 14:49

Blimey, Palmyra is in the middle of nowhere isn't it. Not Palau either.

Looks like some wide open spaces there - once they got rid of the huts.

dook 16th Jan 2020 14:56

Is the surface coral ?

Angaur possibly.

nvubu 16th Jan 2020 15:57

Yes, a coral surface, but not at Angaur (had to look that one up as well)

dook 16th Jan 2020 16:14

Near Guam ?
