St Helena perhaps?

Flap40 27th Dec 2020 19:18

It is not St Helena.

Self loading bear 28th Dec 2020 14:49

At first I could not make out what I was looking at.
Lava rocks in the foreground but was that a shed or bunker with the yellow/black chevrons?
I went looking around for airports on volcanic islands.
Then I saw similar chevrons on La Gomera on the embankment at the end of the runways.
However I think El Hierro North end of the runway is the best fit.

Flap40 28th Dec 2020 15:06

Well done. It is El Hierro.

Self loading bear 28th Dec 2020 16:24

Thanks Flap.

Is this easy?

Is it Maasvlakte Heliport Bear?

I featured Maasvlakte some months ago.

Asturias56 29th Dec 2020 08:13

I know but this is a different picture

Is it in the Netherlands?

Yes, it is in the Netherlands.

Self loading bear 29th Dec 2020 15:59

Overhead view North is up

Asturias56 29th Dec 2020 16:49

Ah! Ijmuiden Heliport?

Not one of the Netherlands Garden spots IIRC?

Self loading bear 29th Dec 2020 16:59

Yes IJmuiden heliport
EHHE
Not one of the cleanest spots in the Netherlands indeed.
Just North of it the “Hoogovens” (Tata steel).

As far as I know only used for pilot service and Dutch coast guard.
Asturias on the stick

Asturias56 30th Dec 2020 07:42

Let's try for an easy one

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....ccc8df83ba.jpg

chevvron 30th Dec 2020 08:36

Scotland Farm?
(I'm hoping that's a 2 stroke engine; I'd hate to fly behind a 4 stroke emitting that much oil smoke.)

Flap40 30th Dec 2020 15:27

It looks like an RV-8 and there are quite a few of those about with smoke systems fitted. No idea about the airfield though.

Is it an airfield rather than a private strip?

Asturias56 31st Dec 2020 07:59

Sorry for the delay but I've been infringing the 24 hour rule occasionally recently I suspect.....
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....fcfc9624ff.jpg

No its not Scotland Farm but its not too dissimilar

It was privately owned I believe but now is in Group ownership and is open to all subject to prior permission

Happy New Year!

the challenge field is in the midst of an extension - it also hosts a very active group of model flyers (flyers of models... not perfect pilots)

By no means an easy one for me and especially for any non Dutch I assume:
Assuming not to be in a city extension, I will go for a polder.
Most polders have little forest.
But Noord Oost polder has some more.
I will go for Glider club Noordoostpolder
address Voorsterweg Markenesse
Just east of the National air and spaceflight laboratory.

Duchess_Driver 1st Jan 2021 10:28

Looks a bit “Brimpton”ish to me....

Asturias56 2nd Jan 2021 07:48

well it's dawn and no additional input from the far side of the Moon ..

Yes Brimpton in Berkshire it is - rather a nice spot as long as you remember to PP and the need to stay north of the runway line

The Duchess has control!

Sorry, it’ll have to be open house.

Mark 1 3rd Jan 2021 14:44

Allow me to fill in. The runway in the background and the place in the foreground are related'
I've not partaken for a while but still look in regularly.

Hearst Castle Airport San Simeon?

Asturias56 3rd Jan 2021 15:11

remember ............... Wait 24 hours to confirm!
as Senior Pilot said (What Cockpit post # 1350 07/01/20) "Quite simply, you can post and discuss to your heart's content from the moment a challenge appears, but the declaration of a winner will not occur until 24 hours has elapsed. This applies to all three competition threads: a reference Wiki also covers the airfield thread.I would emphasise that all threads should respect that this is the Aviation History & Nostalgia forum with an expectation of historic images and/or subjects please."

zetec2 4th Jan 2021 10:10

wonderful view of the airfield, but bet she gets cold when the wind blows ?.

Mark 1 4th Jan 2021 14:36

Asturias56 got it after only 11 minutes!. I'll have to try to be more obscure next time.

It is indeed the Hearst Airport in San Simeon close to Hearst Castle and very much a private affair for the Hearst corporation and its guests.

Occasionally obstructed by the herd of Zebra that roam the nearby hills.

Asturias56 4th Jan 2021 14:53

San Simeon is one of my favourite spots in the whole USA - we stop there every time we're in state so it was a very familiar view - my dear wife took one look over my shoulder and got it! Do not despair - I think someone did me over in 4 minutes last year

So let's go somewhere far away from Hurst, St Simeon & Citizen Kane

Asturias56 5th Jan 2021 14:51

This area (at least to me) has only graced the pages of history on one occasion - but quite famous

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....4b85cc5656.jpg

jensdad 6th Jan 2021 03:31

Good morning A56,
Hmmm. A wild stab in the dark, based on the 'graced the pages of history only once' clue: Somewhere around the Gelibolu peninsula in Turkey, otherwise known as the more Ferrarese-sounding 'Gallipoli'?

chevvron 6th Jan 2021 06:59

Saint Helena? The airport surface looks new with no oil staining.

Asturias56 6th Jan 2021 07:43

regretfully neither of the above - though in rather odd ways both of you are slightly warm

there isn't a lot of commercial traffic - mainly in country flights but seems popular with private aircraft

albatross 6th Jan 2021 11:47

Could it be Tenerife?
OH if correct.

Asturias56 6th Jan 2021 12:36

Alas no....... the moment of fame involved a famous non-national...........

Elba Marina di Campo Italy

albatross 6th Jan 2021 15:09

I think SLB has it.

chevvron 6th Jan 2021 15:46

Damn. selected Elba on ZoomEarth and the airport was 'Federico Fellini'; didn't know there was an 'Elba' on the mainland north of Taranto!!

Asturias56 7th Jan 2021 13:00

yes Bear strikes again!

Elba (the island) - Chevron gave me a worry with St Helena, napoleon's other, less salubrious island home

Thanks Asturias,
When St Helena was called slightly warm, I had sufficient clue.
Confirmed by the non-national.
However why Gelibolu would be warm eluded me.

Now this:
Not too far from our exiles:
