Are we in Ohio ?

sycamore 28th Sep 2019 09:42

The significance of the prop might be from an early change from H-S to C-W electric,or possibly from the prop of Lanphier`s aircraft that shot down Yamamoto,or one of the props from `Glacier girl`.......?

Russell Gulch 28th Sep 2019 13:08

Not Ohio. Nothing to do with Glacier Girl.
Here's another clue:

Having found out who she was, I think it must be Evelyn Sharp Field.

Russell Gulch 28th Sep 2019 15:08

Well sleuthed, dook. Evelyn Sharp Field (KODX) in Ord, Nebraska.

Evelyn Sharp was a local lass who died in a P38 take-off crash in Pennsylvania. She was the USA's first female airmail pilot. She was the youngest American woman to hold a commercial pilot's license. By the age of 20, she was one of only ten female flight instructors in the United States.

There was some apparent but unsubstantiated controversy surrounding the crash which killed her. She had landed the day before for an overnight stop; the aircraft had been perfectly serviceable then. The engine failure happened on the first flight next day. Some suspected that foul play may have been part of it, but there was no investigation, no evidence.

I Goggled "female pilot killed in a P-38" and a colour version of your portrait came up - it was downhill after that.

It has been a great day gentlemen - thank you.

Now the What Cockpit thread has bee resurrected let's support it.

Good evening sycamore.

German yes but not trainer or fighter.

JENKINS 30th Sep 2019 19:23

No idea other than Rangsdorf, and not convinced by that.

dook 30th Sep 2019 19:28

I've done Rangsdorf before.

Self loading bear 30th Sep 2019 19:33

I think this photo is not on www.mil-airfields.de?

sycamore 30th Sep 2019 19:36

Is the airfield still visible on GE ,or under solar panels/coal mines...?

dook 30th Sep 2019 19:37

I think it is not on that website - glasses and magnification no good this time.:)

Still visible on GE and there are some panels around.

JENKINS 30th Sep 2019 20:45

All of which means it is called Basepohl?

dook 30th Sep 2019 21:02

It does indeed.

Basepohl - you are clear hover-taxi.

JENKINS 30th Sep 2019 21:21

hort-lived, in an interesting area, paludrine may have been advised.

India Four Two 30th Sep 2019 21:31

Somewhere in Italy?

JENKINS 30th Sep 2019 21:33

Not Italy.

dook 30th Sep 2019 21:34

I don't think there's a lot of malaria in Italy.

dook 30th Sep 2019 21:37

Somewhere in Africa ?

JENKINS 30th Sep 2019 21:54

Not Africa, and now I must disappear, nos dda.

JENKINS 30th Sep 2019 22:01

Malaria in Italy thought to have been eradicated, but seems not altogether so. Malaria in this spot may have been eradicated by an interesting piece of hydraulic engineering which in turn would have discombombulated some whose attentions may have been unwanted.

Purely an afterthought.
