JENKS,were you in the `Peloton`,pedalling hard on your `Zwift` cycle....no time to look at the countryside...?
That is exactly where I was, though this field was a couple of miles off the route. Prominent glider field.
My summer holiday is following gorge-porn and chateaux-porn around France. |
Ah I did catch a glympse of of a gliding field whilst watching 'Le Tour' on telly but I didn't get the name; somewhere near Nice?
Much closer than the Tour is now. East of the Rhone; I have flown into a relatively close jump field, but not to this place.
I now know where it is but in all honesty I can't name or claim it as I was told by a lellow thread contributor.
Glad to note others are watching the 'tour;' I thought my wife and I were the only ones even though we're not cyclists ourselves. |
Longest Tour day today......
Aerodrome de Serres / la Batier-Montaleon..44.27N 005.43E. la maison est `ouverte`.... |
Yes, that's it. Looked impressive. I have been to Gap, but no closer.
Open House declared. |
Let’s give it a try,
my challenges are usually too simple https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....0da70f8e2.jpeg |
One or two airfields? Strange looking layout(s) Still existing?

Not much changed actually. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....0529d9c5b.jpeg Flap40 on the lead |
Thanks. Open house.

Burtonwood? Unconvinced by hangar, but at least it is a start.
Yes is is a start, but not the correct one. It is still an active airfield.
Judging by the hangar design, I'm guessing somewhere in the US.
That guess would be wrong, nowhere near the US
Morocco,Rabat ,or Marrakech
None of those, but you are on the correct continent.
Here is the control tower. https://skyejg.am.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none |
Possibly Cairo, but can't find any photographic evidence.
Wheelus perhaps?
Not Wheelus or Cairo.
Couple of views of the accommodation blocks

Plenty of shelter; Canadian plains?
Not in Canada - sycamore has previously named locations on the correct continent - Africa.
The barrack blocks look very similiar to those we had at Khormaksar ?
I wouldn't be surprised about that as it was an RAF station

evansb - tried sending you a PM, but it won't go through.
Looks like the Sudan or somewhere similar.
You'd be correct with that assumption
Is Abu Sueir sufficiently similar?
'fraid not Jenks - there is a really big clue in my last image.
Yes there is. A photograph of the RAF Khartoum cricket pitch helped even before you pointed out that. So, how about Khartoum? I had not realised that it was such an established station.
Ah ha, you've noticed the clue, but It isn't RAF Khartoum :)
Good, I'm glad. Buildings on cricket pitch were not quite right.
There aren't that many airfields that might have a warehouse with "Khartoum" over the door.
Gordon's tree was very busy in WW2
It's on the other side of the Nile to the railway station called Gordon's Tree in Khartoum..
