It's not the old RAF base.

India Four Two 2nd Oct 2019 19:11

Yes, it is the new airport at Riyan, Yemen. I am not sure if the tower was there when I flew from that airfield in the early 90s. I was in a Zimex Turbo Porter, which we used to do a geological tour of Wadi Hadhramaut – spectacular scenery.

On the way from Mukalla, we passed the old airfield which was littered with decoy Il-28s, a reminder of the recent Civil War.

if that doesn't make your blood freeze nothing will
Driving around on the plateau north of Mukalla, it took me a while to get used to my driver stopping to pick up hitchhikers armed with AK-47s. As a consequence of nearly every male being armed to the teeth, the civilian Toyota pickup, belonging to the security detachment of my company, had a 0.50 BMG on a tripod on the flatbed!

sycamore has the cyclic and collective.

dook 2nd Oct 2019 19:15

Looks like a USA style aeropark or whatever they're called, where people have houses next to the runway so they can taxy to/from their own hangar.

dook 4th Oct 2019 12:59

USA indeed.

Sounds Scottish.

sycamore 4th Oct 2019 15:17

Middle,N,S E W...?

dook 4th Oct 2019 15:38

West coast.

edit: the view is to the east.

edit 2: it's a private airstrip with no ATC facilities or other services.

sycamore 4th Oct 2019 20:35

dook 5th Oct 2019 18:43

Dunno - Germany or Luxembourg ?

sycamore 5th Oct 2019 18:59

The flag has `YPRES` on it with maybe an O before the Y,but can`t find any airfield near Ypres; are we in Belgium....?

dook 5th Oct 2019 19:11

Dumbo here didn't notice that.

sycamore 5th Oct 2019 19:20

Thought Jag pilots had eyesight like `hi&&*^se rats...sorry ,you were a bomber pilot ,not LLFR.....

dook 5th Oct 2019 19:39

Self loading bear 5th Oct 2019 20:17

Oops flag not scratched out.
It is not near Ypres.
flag says probably .... perles

dook 5th Oct 2019 20:18

Is this a grass airstrip ?

I think Perles is a red herring.

dook 5th Oct 2019 20:30

Can you answer my post at #17297 - I think you missed it.

Self loading bear 5th Oct 2019 20:48

It is indeed a grass strip
and the perles is not a herring
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....526d6d4a1.jpeg

dook 5th Oct 2019 21:01

Well, I reckon it's Germany or Luxembourg.

dook 5th Oct 2019 21:13

On GE, just looked for Perle. It's a town in Luxembourg and near there is an airfield which matches your overhead view.

It is called Noertrange.

Self loading bear 5th Oct 2019 21:45

If you or anybody else would have read back my posting history you would have found that I had a busy time in Lux and that you would have to look out for challenges from that neighborhood. Noertrange (or Notringen) is indeed home to skydive club cvPerles.

Who is Dik ?

Dik is a former collegue of mine with the most unfortunate name
Dik de Kok
my spelling correction keeps inserting names it recognizes from my contact database.
If anybody knows how to disable that on an Iphone please send a PM.

Does not look like an airfield with war history
might even be post war?
the roadmap of the city part nearby suggest architectural planning.
European mainland?

dook 6th Oct 2019 14:19

It opened in 1935 and finally closed in 1952.

It didn't really have a war role.

Yes - mainland Europe.

sycamore 6th Oct 2019 14:22

Looks rather French......or Italian

dook 6th Oct 2019 14:25

The former Monsieur.

It no longer exists.

sycamore 6th Oct 2019 17:05

Was it in a suburb of PARIS...?

dook 6th Oct 2019 17:08

No. East of Paris.

It is now part of the town you can see.

Would you like a GE view ?

sycamore 6th Oct 2019 17:13

I`m sure it`s all swallowed up; GE would be nice

dook 6th Oct 2019 17:35

OK here it is.
