Dounreay possibly? Aka HMS Tern II.
Not Dounray - that isn't a coastline.

It's not the usual UK layout either. Looks more like continental Europe - France, Germany or perhaps even Soviet.

Wherever it is, someone is having a grim time of it down there...

France, Germany or perhaps even Soviet
nacluv - yes, it is one of those :D

Here's an photo from after the bombing:

I've replaced the first image as i have just noticed it had a "hand" cursor in the middle of it!

nacluv 11th Jul 2012 20:14

OK then, those earth banked revetments make me think 'Soviet'.

Too far east

After some further research, it seems that the current runway at this airfield was rebuilt on a different alignment than that during and after WWII.

Here is an intermediate image, taken while a shortened version of the original runway was present, with the new, and current runway in the process of being built.

And I have just discovered that there are two airfields in this image. Bonus points if you can name them both.

Schwabisch Flugplatz/Schwabisch Hall ,later Camp Dolan / Dolan Barracks, US Army Airfield.
Second airfield,possibly Weckrieden.

Chaps, where the heck do you garner your data from, I for one am most impressed, you're pretty PFM on this :ok:

nvubu 12th Jul 2012 17:55

Sorry about the delay in responding - SD has them both in one.

Here's where I discovered the 2nd airfield - which is on the left hand side of the photo.

Marvellous. Adolf Wurth Flugplatz. There's even a li'l flivver sitting on the ramp at grass strip Weckrieden, in the GE Year 2000 imagery. I had a cheap shot to offer but photobucket won't let me in this evening. After the weekend maybe, LFH
