Greece, or the Balkans?

Cubs2jets 1st Jan 2008 12:39

Further east than the Agean. The airport is important to the surrounding population because there are no roads connecting to the rest of the country. If you want to go somewhere, it's either by boat or by air. The main city served is a familiar port city.

Reluctant to post but it is 2 days on - well I spent far too much time searching but found it at Petropavlosk-Kamchatskiy, Russia. A big AD base and homebase of the Pacific sub fleet I think. By the way - is that you flying in there - interesting place to go.

Russel Gulch - there is some confusion re your 'post' (sorry just noticed the pun) - Post Field and Fort Sill are 2 different airports. I feel I should have known as I did (some) of my flying training there, although not as long ago as your picture. This map shows both:

I see someone else has jumped in out of sequence, I do have a photo but it is neither old nor black and white so we should carry on.

Backgroundnoise,

VERY well done! It is indeed Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky UHPP.

It is indeed me taking the pictures. I passed through twice in 2003 and 2005. Things were much more laid back in 2005.

Here are 4 more pictures you may find interesting: another aerial view showing several of the surrounding active volcanos, the terminal building, the alert pad and military parking.

Thank you very much LET and Tiger Mate. It's not as intuitive as the directions lead one to believe! :ugh: I'm learning:rolleyes:

So, are we all clear for the next challenge?

http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/2...bwsmallqr0.jpg

This one is a control tower seen from the 'landside' and just to make it really easy I have shown a shot from inside the tower looking onto the 'airside'.

(Apologies for the very poor image quality and the black and white they were taken with a disposable camera in Feb 1999, so there is another clue)

North Korea:
Sunan International Airport?

The airline is Air Koryo, and Sunan is the airlines hub.

John Hill 2nd Jan 2008 16:58

That was obviously far too easy! It is of course Pyongyang. Congratulations to Tiger_Mate.

Tiger_mate 2nd Jan 2008 17:04

Apologies for not responding sooner.

Is there anybody here that has never had a go would like to post? If so please go ahead.

NB If no takers by 22:00 GMT > Open House

John Hill 2nd Jan 2008 20:00

Tiger_Mate, I must ask, are you familiar with Pyongyang? Did I make it too easy leaving the airline logos visible?:}

Fishtailed 2nd Jan 2008 20:57

Thanks for the chance, here goes.
What aerodrome was this tower and terminal at.

Background Noise: I see what you mean.
My source did not differentiate between the two airfields. I have to confess that I did some internet mapping myself, and see "Post Road" as being north of Road 62, which indicates that Henry Post AAF is the correct one. Fort Sill Boulevard also routes N/S parallel to the Henry Post Runway, just west, which might have confused me.
I hope no error/confusion was thus caused; apologies if that was the case.

Ref: Pyongyang & was it easy.
Not at all, it was a perfect challenge for this forum, and I have no knowledge of the place at all.
It would be fairly easy to post a nebulous airstrip tucked away at the back end of beyond with a poor quality photo and no hints as to a solution. Far better to give a clue for us Sherlock Holmes types to get our teeth into. In this case my initial curiosity revolved around China, and therefore simply googled IL 62 to find an airframe with similar markings. Once the airline was identified, I had a likely country, especially as with so many of one airline, it was almost certainly showing IL62s 'at home' Wilkpidia gave me airline details and about 4 airports to choose from, I opted for the primary hub but could easily have got it wrong.
How certain was I when I posted? No more than 70%
Was it a good quizz? You bet
Am I in need of a life?

Open House

Russell Gulch 2nd Jan 2008 21:33

Well the "open house" seems to have been done before, so I offer the following.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...339reduced.jpg

Just a small clue: I know this field because I have a small sherry once a year with a former B17 belly-turret gunner who was based here (and did three tours in that role).

I took the photo myself.

An additional point for anyone who can describe (phonetically) how it is pronounced.

Is it Burscough, Bersco.

John Hill 2nd Jan 2008 21:59

Regardless, good work Tiger_Mate and thanks for your comments.
