Brooks Field, Texas ?

Russell Gulch 28th Dec 2007 17:34

No, sorry.
Further clue: of all the respondents to date, con-pilot is the closest.

John Hill 29th Dec 2007 02:39

Well you got me stumped Russel! According to one account only 5 US Army airfields did observer balloon training and they have all been either mentioned and/or their hangars are not in a straight line! Maybe that account is wrong, or I have the wrong 5 airfields, or that balloon is not used for observer training, though it does seem to have a basket hanging from it!

Post AAF, Ft Sill, Oklahoma.

StbdD has it!

Post Field, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, circa 1917-1918. 94000 acres. Curtis Jennies in the photo. Later, Flight E of the 16th Balloon Observation Squadron was based here. I understand it's in the Lawton area, south of OK City. The main road to the currect Lawton Airport is called Post Road, so I assume the Lawton airfield is on some of those many acres.

You have control.

StbdD 29th Dec 2007 17:52

Thanks Mr Gultch. As Fort Sill is the US Army Artillery School that observation balloon was a pretty good hint.

Here's one that will probably not last long:

Well fer heavens sake, hell I was there two weeks ago. I knew that place looked familiar.

Feel like a right idiot now. :uhoh:

Russell Gulch 29th Dec 2007 19:51

Sorry, c-p. I said you were the closest, eh?

Russell Gulch 29th Dec 2007 21:45

StbdD

The rather granite-looking coastline might draw one to an Atlantic coast. Possibly the west coast of Ireland or Scotland. On that basis I would be tempted to say somewhere like Colnsay.

But we know this isn't the case, because rw 23 reciprocal is marked as "5" and not "05" as is proper in God-fearing countries; an omission that our American cousins still haven't recognized.

So my guess is somewhere in the US or its very many dominions, or maybe Canada. But I still reckon an Atlantic coast.

A very happy new year to you all.

O.K. friends,

I'm just up and online and see I was correct. I DO have a picture to post, but have to get it into photobucket. Please give me a bit of time before someone else posts.

EDIT: Pictures are in Photobucket. I tried copying URL from both top of page ang box at lower right of picture. Each time I got IMG.../IMG around the picture. Replaced IMG with URL and this is what I got. :ugh:

Flap40 30th Dec 2007 14:38

Too many http's in your urls and the [IMG] tags work for me.

...and too many kb for us poor folk on dial-up. Remember, anything more than 72dpi is a waste.

Happy New Year.

Sorry, Russ, first time posting pictures, but I did follow the 800 X 600 recommendation on the "Image posting" thread.

Let me help you visualize the pictures and maybe you can guess...

Two aerial shots of the same airport, one taken from the north and one taken from the south. Parallel runways (one now less used). Extensive taxiways with numerous parking "keys". Large parking areas on the NW and SE corners of the airport. A river appears in one of the pictures and the surrounding landscape is agricultural.

Got the picture? :)

Over a day and no guesses. Obviously a difficult one!

Central Europe, possibly Germany?

Cubs2jets 1st Jan 2008 05:47

Not central Europe. It is on the coast and was an important air defense base for the country.
