Croydon? trying to read wots written on the grass in background, but it looks like Ringway?, but probably says 'runway'
|
Not old Croydon, nor old Ringway, but it is old, and now, sadly, closed.
|
Ratcliffe, Leicester.
|
Andy is correct.:ok: Well done:D Ratcliffe was an important ATA ferry base during W.W.II. The aerodrome was closed in 1950.
Here is a war photo showing some diverse aircraft types: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...eAerodrome.jpg |
Thank you, evansb:)
Soo, another challenging one, again airship based: http://upload3.postimage.org/122262/airship.jpg http://upload3.postimage.org/122277/airship2.jpg 2 pics to make it a bit easier;) |
621andy's challenge
How about the Airship mast and hangar at Karachi in what is now Pakistan?
Mel |
Yep, definately Karachi.
|
bu99er me that was quick! CORRECT! Thought this one would run and run:}
FYI- it was built for the R101,for the London-Karachi route, but obviously it didn't make it:( The mast was unusual in having a gas storage facility built into it so that the airship could be topped up whilst on the mast. The Shed was 850' long, 180' wide and 170' high, and cost 93,000 quid to build in 1928. It's actually bigger than the cardington sheds, but of a simpler design. It was all eventually dismantled and the steel/building materials used to build bridges and buildings for Pakistan railways. It's now the site of Karachi International airport... Over to MReyn24050 for the next thrilling episode:} |
Next Challenge
Thanks 621andy, it was a little too close after your Zeppelin Hangar challenge as I noticed the Airship mast during the search for the location of the hangar.
This one will not last long either. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...ortquiz014.jpg Mel |
Deffo aircraft production. Engine test rigs visible, so maybe RR.
I'm pretty sure its Filton. If I'm wrong, feel free to kick my arse up the runway and back, as I'm a Bristle boy meself, my luvver;) |
Mel's Challenge
He be right, it is Filton and the black sheds were Bristol Engines in those days but as you rightly say they be Rolls Royce now. I worked for many years in Whittle House on the opposite side of Gypsy Patch Lane for many years.
Here is a more upto date photo of Filton. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...ort/Filton.jpg You regain control |
Had my first flight in a Chippy from Filton:)
Hmm, getting more difficult to find 'interesting' shots! Got a few at home, but not going to be back there for a bit:rolleyes: Well, here goes with the next quick-fire round, fingers on buzzers: http://upload3.postimage.org/125132/airfieldquiz.jpg |
