Moira is spot on:ok::D It was home to HMS Nabaron. The airstrip has been overgrown by foilage.

Moira 27th Feb 2008 21:36

Open house!

The SSK 27th Feb 2008 22:11

Here's one with ready-made clues:

norwich 27th Feb 2008 22:23

There is a pub just outside Coltishall called "The Three Horsehoes" ?

The SSK 27th Feb 2008 22:30

norwich: There is a pub just outside Coltishall called "The Three Horsehoes" ?
At the risk of being facetious, these were Horse Shoes. :)

Ergo, not Coltishall

norwich 27th Feb 2008 22:36

Sorry, could this be my second typo of the night ? is ignorance still bliss ? Keith.

Moira 28th Feb 2008 07:01

former Usworth RAF airfield

And again: open house if (when :)) confirmed...

The SSK 28th Feb 2008 11:04

Sunderland Usworth it is. Briefly civilian, it now lies underneath the Nissan car factory

Soddit 28th Feb 2008 13:16

Open House so here is the next ( historic) challenge.

Johannisthal Berlin?

sidtheesexist 28th Feb 2008 15:17

RAF Upavon..............

Upyer RRR 28th Feb 2008 15:33

Stag Lane?

sabredog 28th Feb 2008 15:36

R.A.F. Hendon, Air tournement/pageant 1920s?

Soddit 28th Feb 2008 17:06

Gentlemen, neither Berlin,Stag Lane,Upavon nor Hendon. It is however in Europe and the 1920s is close.

sabredog 28th Feb 2008 18:29

Belgium/Italy?

S'land 28th Feb 2008 18:48

The Italian Corpo Aeronautica Militare used a number of French fighters in WWII and that looks like a Caproni bomber in the background.

Is it Italian, possibly in 1923 when it became the fascist Règia Aeronautica Italia?

Duckbutt 28th Feb 2008 19:56

Significant amount of google guess work would suggest that the bomber could well be a Handley Page V-1500.

So could the airfield be Bircham Newton?

sabredog 28th Feb 2008 20:13

Belgian Air Service Brasschaat near Brussels? H.P.1500 in background, with possibly HD-1s or Nieuport XV11s of 9em Escadrille to the right of the picture.

Moira 28th Feb 2008 20:55

I think Sabredog is right, the airplanes to the right are marked with a 'Scottish thistle', which was the sign of the Brasschaat first squadron.

IF not, it migth also be Evere/Haren, nowadays Brussels Airport.

Moira 28th Feb 2008 21:08

Just found a picture on the web of Evere in 1919, looks like the same location:

Soddit 29th Feb 2008 01:59

Brilliant! MOIRA has it. Haren, Brussels it is - circa 1919. I suspect it's rather more the site of the present Eurocontrol HQ than Brussels Airport, though. The picture I posted was probably taken from the roof of the Zeppelin hangar : Moira's picture seems to be from a lower level.Over to you

Moira 29th Feb 2008 06:28

Not quite so brilliant if you know that all this time I was searching the web while having two 1921 pictures of the same airport hanging right above my desk! :ugh: Though I must add that they are showing a completely different part of the site. ;) Anyway ...

Open house!

sidtheesexist 1st Mar 2008 13:33

Clue time? Is it a US base at all?

621andy 1st Mar 2008 13:53

Well it's not the USofA.

Europe would be a better guess;)

I must say I'm very surprised with the lack of interest in this one. Maybe another pic would help?

S'land 1st Mar 2008 15:05

Is it the old Dornier flyingboat base at Friedrichshafen?

621andy 1st Mar 2008 15:24

Sorry, not F'hafen........

evansb 1st Mar 2008 23:49

How many years between the first and second photo? It almost doesn't look like the same place.

621andy 2nd Mar 2008 01:41

It is technically all the same place, but the second pic is of the hangars on the side of the peninsula as far as I can work out from other pics :)

Edit- the 2 hangars in the first pic are still there. As to the timescale between the 2 pics, I've got no idea...but construction started in 1933 apparently.

Background Noise 2nd Mar 2008 07:21

The hangars look the same but the shorelines look completely different.

621andy 2nd Mar 2008 09:35

I took the photos from the official website of this airfield, so don't blame me if the pics don't match up:sad:

But as far as I can work out from other pics on the site and from Google Earth, the 2nd pic is to the east of the first. The area is/was not only a seaplane base, but later became a training base for a certain type of soldier. The airfield there now is land based and covers a fair area along the coast...

bigjok 2nd Mar 2008 10:48

Montijo in Portugal?

621andy 2nd Mar 2008 11:06

Not Montijo.

Soddit 2nd Mar 2008 11:19

Hyeres - Le Palyvestre

sabredog 2nd Mar 2008 11:20

Cagliari,Italy.

621andy 2nd Mar 2008 13:15

None of the above I'm afraid...

Snifferdog 2nd Mar 2008 14:50

What was the answer to question 2584 ??
http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthr...83572&page=130

Upyer RRR 2nd Mar 2008 14:54

Marseilles?

sabredog 2nd Mar 2008 16:46

H.Q. of the Troupes de Marine, looks like you are spot on.

621andy 2nd Mar 2008 21:43

Not Marseilles....

StbdD 2nd Mar 2008 22:19

Ajaccio, Corsica?

Snifferdog the answer to 2584 was Karachi.
