Easter Island, Midway?

aviate1138 25th Nov 2008 11:14

Perhaps Palmyra?

flyingwing 25th Nov 2008 13:28

I suppose a partially overgrown runway and trees aren't a lot to go on! This airfield has a particularly historic connection.

evansb 25th Nov 2008 16:21

The old strip at Yap?

Hyperborean 25th Nov 2008 16:27

Luganville, Espiritu Santo?

John Hill 25th Nov 2008 16:30

Penrhyn in the Northern Cooks?

evansb 25th Nov 2008 17:29

Change my Yap to Palmyra.

flyingwing 25th Nov 2008 21:59

Sorry everyone - we're not there yet. To add to my last hint think WW2 and a momentous event (that should do it!).

John Hill 25th Nov 2008 22:24

Tinian! Open house, I am going for my lunch time walkies.......!

flyingwing 25th Nov 2008 22:32

Yes – well done John. It is indeed one of the runways at what was Tinian North Field whence the two atomic bomb missions were launched on Japan. The two bomb pits from which the B29s Enola Gay and Bock’s Car were loaded are still evident also. Open house it is then.
(A belated word of thanks to I.garey for his interesting previous challenge. When I started work in Peterborough in 1964 Westwood airfield was still discernible – all housing now.)

l.garey 26th Nov 2008 10:33

Thanks flyingwing for the compliment. Peterborough Westwood airfield looked like this in 1990. Now even the factory has gone and been replaced by a prison! A few of the old RAF buildings survive (eg Officers' Mess).

con-pilot 26th Nov 2008 15:29

Midway Island. I've landed there.

(Oh, watch out for the birds. :ooh:)

If correct, open house.

The Real Slim Shady 26th Nov 2008 15:52

Easy peasy, told you so.

The joys of Midway.....and the Boston Whalers over to East Island....there's a story there.

Warmtoast 26th Nov 2008 17:01

As its Open House - where?

Flap40 26th Nov 2008 17:06

I think we had that exact picture about 10 months ago but I can't remember where it was!

KeMac 26th Nov 2008 17:46

Yes we did and I can't remember where it was either:confused::confused:

Warmtoast 26th Nov 2008 19:36

My oops!

I posted it before and didn't realise it.

Apologies for the error and OPEN HOUSE!

John Hill 27th Nov 2008 06:44

Wanaka, New Zealand?

barit1 27th Nov 2008 11:54

Gotta be. Only a hundred clicks or so from Queenstown, a more adventuresome airfield...

John Hill 27th Nov 2008 16:37

Flaps40, the floor is yours! Wanaka at the 2008 show.

McKinnon Pass Airstrip, Southern Alps, New Zealand ?

John Hill 28th Nov 2008 05:14

Close enough for me Evansb.:ok:

The strip is also known as Sutherland Falls and Quinton Huts strip. The photo is from the top of the McKinnon Pass.

I believe this picture is from the strip looking towards the Sutherland Falls, McKinnon pass is on the left.

Paris, Le Bourget? Is that a Martin Maryland?

chevvron 28th Nov 2008 11:09

I think it is a Maryland so the airport might be Baltimore.

evansb 28th Nov 2008 13:24

Sorry, not Paris, nor Baltimore.

Tempsford 28th Nov 2008 17:30

Is it Toulouse?

evansb 28th Nov 2008 18:02

Sorry, not Toulouse. Not in France.

The Real Slim Shady 28th Nov 2008 21:34

Montreal???

evansb 28th Nov 2008 22:14

Sorry, not Montreal. Not in Canada.

Tempsford 28th Nov 2008 22:50

Amsterdam?

seacue 28th Nov 2008 23:02

Floyd Bennett Field, New York?

evansb 29th Nov 2008 01:19

Sorry, not Amsterdam. Not Floyd Bennett Field, New York. The airfield was closed only briefly and then reopened for a different purpose.
